iverside Coach Koterba Though not a City League power house, Central's Cage Pirates did provide their fans with some exciting and scrappy basketball during the 1953-54 season. Showing signs of disappointment at times, the Pirates just couldn't seem to hit their stride against their larger and more-experienced City League oppon- ents. For example, in games at North, South and Linden the Bucs, though playing smooth and aggressive ball, were no match, as the Bulldogs, Bears and Pan- thers hit a terrific percentage of their shots and were not to be outdone. On other occasions, however, there was a change of pace. The Bucs displayed speed and tranquility in pulling stunning upset victories over Portsmouth, 50-42, Lancaster St. Mary, 70-58, and West, 70-50. As far as individual performance, it must be all at- tributed to senior Don Harris and iunior Chuck Mc- Campbell, Harris, a consistant scorer, led the team in point making. McCampbell, right behind Harris in scoring, was the Pirate playmaker. Ilm Carmon and Bill Smith, although never scoring threats, were both big men under the boards as well as defensive specialists. Carmon's key achievement being against North, as he limited the Bears' great center, Jim Franklin, to two baskets. Other members of the squad who contributed to the cause were iuniors Don Robinson, Gene Bennett, and sophomores Dave Chandler, Jim Slaughter, and Gene Jordon. Jordon and Robinson were starters while Chandler, Slaughter, and Bennett saw considerable action. With these five experienced men returning next year it might serve as an indication that Chuck Koter- ba's Pirates are going to give their opponents a run for their money in the coming season.
