Pirate Tom Pentello Paul Oates Frank Burton Paul Schooley Displaying power and speed along with a stone wall defense, Central's football Pirates came up with one of their most commendable seasons in 1953, compiling a record of seven wins while dropping only two. This squad was made up for the most part of the same members as the 1952 team which ended up in the league cellar and won only one game. That year's experience, coupled with a determination to win, established the Bucs as the most rever- ed aggregation in the city. After dropping their opener to Steubenville, 25-2, the Pirates bounced back to route a good St. Charles team, 34-6. From then on the Bucs began to roll, and lead by iunior quarterback, Joe Morlan, spurted to six straight vic- tories, five of which were over the city league opponents. Central's ground game was by far the greatest asset. Running from the short punt, it was highlighted by Morlan's line punching, Don Brooks' quick openers, Gene Bennett's and Paul Schooley's broken-field dashes, and George An- krum's explosive downfield blocking. But the key reason for the success of the backfield razzle dazzle was the Pirates' fast and experienced forward wall. The line was spearheaded by such All-City men as Don Harris, Ralph Holderman, Gene Roszman, Ilm Carmon, Sam Webb and Dan Bargdill. Also doing their share of the iob were Taylor Trimble, Jim Emmitt, Phil Pertee, Chuck McCampbell, Paul Oates, Harry Chadwick and sophomores Tom Pentello and Frank Burton.
