HE American school system represents the diverse cultures that have made America a great and powerful nation. By con- stitutional law of the land our Catholic Schools are American. The Protestant Schools are American. The Jewish Synagogue Schools are American. Private schools that dot the land from coast to coast are American. It is this very freedom of education among other things that distinguishes true democracy from the totalitarian states. We Catholics believe that' religious and moral training is es- sential in the formation of character. Because of the diversity of religious beliefs in the public schools, we build our own schools at tremendous cost and tremendous sacrifice. However, there is a small minority of secularists, powerful in influence because of their position who look upon the private school as a menace to democracy. A system of education which encourages children to love God and pattern their lives after His life is hardly apt to imperil democracy, especially since history has repeatedly demonstrated that a government' which rules out the teachings of Christ is soon perverted into a tyranny or des- potism, in which arrogant men recognize no law or restraint ex- cept the broad limitations of their own materialistic desires and ambitions. The Catholic Church is totalitarian only in the sense that it believes and teaches all divinely revealed truths. it is authoritar- ian in the sense that it accepts the principal of authority in human life. divine authority in matters of faith and morals, human author- ity in the family and society. The Church teaches that the author- ity of parents and civil rulers is from God and that authority must be respected in all things save sin. For this she is called reactionary. Our fathers spoke' and fought for the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happi- ness. These things are called old and out-of-date by the secularistsg so is the religious schoolg so is the private schoolsg but it is these old things that have made America great and will save America from the non-American designs of secularist's especially in the field of education.
