THE 1952 Q 5 N f I ' f , - x 4, ,Q WUT, Kg if A I Q Published by the Senior Class of CENTRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL Portland, Oregon L .f.15i:j':-1 - El 9 THIS Book IS defilm ted TO FATHER WILLIS WHALE This, the dedication page of the yearbook represents not merely the dedication of our annualg it sets forth a declaration - a decla- ration of the respect held for one who represents to Central men a charity and justice as a su- perior, zeal and interest as a teacher, sincerity and simplicity as a friend. V To the Reverend Willis Vvhalen, who is for Centralites the exem- plar of all those qualities neces- sary in the priestly character. this issue of the Scepter is sincerely dedicated. 2 'IQHE Mosu' Rnzvmumo EDVVARD D. HOWARD, D. IJ. flrchbixlzop of Portland in Oregon, the lender of our arrlxzlinfese and our fnitlzful friend and founder 3 HE American school system represents the diverse cultures that have made America a great and powerful nation. By con- stitutional law of the land our Catholic Schools are American. The Protestant Schools are American. The Jewish Synagogue Schools are American. Private schools that dot the land from coast to coast are American. It is this very freedom of education among other things that distinguishes true democracy from the totalitarian states. We Catholics believe that' religious and moral training is es- sential in the formation of character. Because of the diversity of religious beliefs in the public schools, we build our own schools at tremendous cost and tremendous sacrifice. However, there is a small minority of secularists, powerful in influence because of their position who look upon the private school as a menace to democracy. A system of education which encourages children to love God and pattern their lives after His life is hardly apt to imperil democracy, especially since history has repeatedly demonstrated that a government' which rules out the teachings of Christ is soon perverted into a tyranny or des- potism, in which arrogant men recognize no law or restraint ex- cept the broad limitations of their own materialistic desires and ambitions. The Catholic Church is totalitarian only in the sense that it believes and teaches all divinely revealed truths. it is authoritar- ian in the sense that it accepts the principal of authority in human life. divine authority in matters of faith and morals, human author- ity in the family and society. The Church teaches that the author- ity of parents and civil rulers is from God and that authority must be respected in all things save sin. For this she is called reactionary. Our fathers spoke' and fought for the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happi- ness. These things are called old and out-of-date by the secularistsg so is the religious schoolg so is the private schoolsg but it is these old things that have made America great and will save America from the non-American designs of secularist's especially in the field of education. The task of carrying out' this project was entrusted to a capable staff under co-editors Tom Perry and Henri Arata. hflake-up was revamped, new lively columns were installed and an attempt was made to save news scoops for release in the paper. Late this year the Rampart won an All-Catholic rating in com- petition with papers from ll Westerii states in the Press Convention sponsored by St. lVIary's College of California . 56 ss sa RQ-. DINNER PARTY AND SENIOR PROM M565 C' W l k ' 1 I 63 mv lvxrrllgl lx I 1 FOO The 1951 RAM', squad competed for the first time in the newly-formed Loop-Valley Coast league, and finished the season in a three-way tie for second place . . . winning four and losing two games. Central dropped three non-league games and thus compiled a -1 win, 5 loss season. Four returning regulars, Tim O'Neil1, Leon Hittner, Bil Cassidy and Frank Schmitz, as well as four other lettermen Art Lewis, Bob Taylor, Jack Taylor and Jim Nichols, greeted coaches Harry Scarff and Tony Sidel. These, plus four other squadmen and Paul Barthelemy, a new recruit, formed the nucleus of the '51 team, and provided a fairly bright outlook. The team started off well, by defeating the tough '-'Buldogsn from Albany 7-6 and met a stubborn Milwaukie crew in the second game and barely slipped by them 6-0. Dame fortune frowned on the Rams in their third start and while out-downing and out-gaining the Papermakers from Camas dropped the game by a 26-0 count. TBALL ln losing to the well-trained, powerful Astoria Fishermen Central took its worst defeat by a 47-17 score. The Rams looked good in part but' couldn't match the polished Fishermen offense. The Cheese-makers from Tillamook sur- prised the Central crew in the third league game and came out on top of a 21 to 1-1 struggle. Prep defeated Central in the traditional stadium clash for t'he first time in several years by a 6-0 score. The Rams muffed sev- eral scoring opportunities and in the last few minutes gave up a touchdown to the determin- ed Crusader offense. Central started league play with t'wo wins and finished the league play with two wins defeating Hood River 13-7 and the big Gres- ham team 19-13. ln the last game, a non-league contest the Rams payed a fine game but were out- sclored 19-6 at Medford. 62 V 1?
