The fclw iA bedicated to Ei leap 77011 The Most Reverend John Francis Noll, fifth Bishop of the Diocese of Fort Wayrie, celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of his consecration to the holy priesthood this year. In that length of time, he has affected the lives of many people. probably even you! Of course. he has baptized many people. and confirmed even more. but that has not been the extent of his work. At Kendallville. his first pastorate, Father Noll became interested in mission work among non-Catholics. For one year. he was relieved of parish work in order to conduct lecture courses for these people. He has still retained that interest and does much to correct the attitudes of non-Catholics. In the peace and quiet of Besancon. where he was transferred in 1902, Father Noll began a literary career which he has pursued ever since. His many pamphlets and books have found their way into thousands of homes. His first pamphlet. KIND WORDS FROM YOUR PASTOR. is still in demand after 45 years. At Huntington, in l9I2, Father Noll founded OUR SUNDAY VISITOR. a national Catholic weekly. which has attained the largest circulation of any Catholic paper in the world. Every Thursday, this paper enters into your home to pleasantly acquaint you with your religion and the activities of your Church. In the year I923. Monsignor Noll built, one mile west of Huntington, a Training School, Novitiate. and Motherhouse for Missionary Catechists. Without the direct aid of the Ca- techists and the indirect aid of Monsignor Noll, more than 2,000,000 Mexicans would have grown up without any knowledge of their religion. The very school we attend would still be a dream if it were not for the effort, prayers, and financial aid of Bishop Noll. In 1939, Central Catholic High School of Fort Wayrie was formally dedicated and opened. Other Catholic High Schools have been established for Hammond, East Chicago, and South Bend. A beautiful hotel has been converted into a seminary. This seminary, called Our Lady of The Lake, is located at Lake Wawasee. One would think that Bishop Noll's day was capably filled by his many activities. He nevertheless manages to hold a position on the National Committee of the Legion of Decency. and he recently was elected chairman of an Episcopal Committee to direct a national campaign against lewd literature. To acknowledge the accomplishments of His Excellency throughout the world and especially here at Central Catholic we humbly dedicate to him the 1948 ECHO. Carole M ourey Page 6
