The Junior Varsity Volleyball team played an extremely well 1979-1980 season. Under the instruction of Dina Zmuda, the team consisted of 10 freshmen and only 3 sophomores. For being such a young group, the girls surely did prove themselves by gaining a record of 10 wins and only one loss. This loss was to Woodward. Returning freshmen next year will have the experience for playing Varsity Volleyball their last two years. Moving up from the J .V. team to the Varsity team brings about a sense of accomplishment to the girls. Janet Groch won the award for Most Inspirational. The team's 16-6 record brought back memories of many of Central's greatest teams. Although the team did not win any major titles, the season had various highlights. Three appeara- nces at Centennial Hall, and a sectional final victory over the Start Spartans, the Irish season was considered a great success. Receiving honors at the team's post season basketball banquet was, Senior Co-Captain Gary Bumpus, for the second consecutive year voted most valuable player, senior Todd Perz was voted player with the most desire, and Mark Lechlak received the lst Annual Rick Zalewski Rebounding Award. o 1 l Irish Cagers Ba ck Senior Gary Bumpus soars over defender for an easy two.
