Wernert (B.A.) Religion A new course of study in religion, that is most comprehensive, is being introduced this year. It is based on the important doctrines of Christianity as found in the Scriptures and the Apostles Creed. I ' he rest of our holy religion has been woven into this plan: liturgy. Church history, and apologetics. The senior year prepares the student for his entry into the world with particular stress placed on vocation and pur¬ pose in life. Such a course is a great advantage in the formation of the true Catholic who not only knows his faith, but also lives it. B i i ’ i 1 - i. (M.A.) Religion, English The English department provides instruction in the language arts: speaking, writing, reading, and listening. The curriculum in English covers all aspects of functional English and is so integrated as to be interesting and meaningful to the student. In order to achieve correctness and effectiveness in speech and writing, life situations in the school, the home, and the community furnish the motive for composition activity. I i ' 1 Sister M. (M.A.) Religion, English The four year course in literature is permeated with the Catholic view of life and the world. I ' he entire field of American and English literature is covered with special emphasis on the Catholic con¬ tribution to the language. These aspects of the Catholic way of life are designed to develop good literary taste and sound Catholic belief and conduct. Courses in journalism and speech are offered in the senior year. Rev. J. Religion, Spanish To develop the students’ ability to speak and write Spanish is the aim of the Spanish department. This is accomplished by stress¬ ing work in pronunciation, grammar, read¬ ing, and conversation. Spanish has great practical value since it develops a knowledge of the language which todav takes on new importance because of our Latin American relationships. The course definitely strives to stimulate a lively interest in the “Good Neighbor Policy” and to teach an appreciation of our neighbors to the south through a study of Latin America and its people. Sister M. Concilia O.S.F. (B.A.) Religion, Spanish Sister M. Roselma O.S.F. (M.A.) Relifjion, French Fidiicatioii in French is a power-point for developing Christians. No text book course—this. It reaches out to study French in all its aspects: race, faniilv, history, education, and politics. A study of the cultural contributions of France is presented with a view to stimulate a deeper appreciation of the radiance and rich influence upon civilization. To render it more interesting this department has a film-strip library, a large record collection and a classroom library of over a hundred books (fiction, biography, and travel), which treat of French characteristics. In future years when students have for¬ gotten tenses of irregular verbs there will still remain in them a deep social-mindedness rooted in French Christian convictions. erman The interest in the study of the German language has not di¬ minished because of the world’s contempt for the arrogance of the former rulers of Germany. Resides learning to read, write, and speak the language, the students study the geography of the country, her interesting historical places, industries, natural resources, and forms of entertainment. Old customs, legends, and scientists are en¬ grossing subjects. Since music is basic in the German temperament, German songs and rollicking folk tunes may often be heard emanat¬ ing from the German room. Sister M. David O.S.F. Courses in ancient, medieval, modern, and American history present the study of past human great¬ ness and man’s service to God and to his fellow men. They enable us to acquire, as ' ell as to vindicate, the part Divine Providence plays in the agency of secondary and spiritual causes. This study of human culture presents the origin of many im¬ portant elements of present-day civilization inherited from past-ages and emphasizes the contributions the Church made to it. It also aims to produce students worthy of the “City of God’’ and qualified to be citizens of the United States. Sister M. Mark R.S.M. (M.S.E.) History Sister M. Neri R.S.M. Work in designing and interior decorating, free hand drawing, color theory, lettering, art of modeling, application of theatrical makeup, jioster work, pen and ink sketching, dress designing, and clay modeling are offered to the students in this course. ' The stage settings for “Our Hearts Were Young and Ga and “Firefly” were painted hy the girls in this class. Beyond this theoretical background since art is also the right making of things, finished problems are carried out in ceramics, wood car ing, metal-craft, model-building, and leather- crafts. An interesting project this year consisted of an unusual set of stations worked out in symbols. ' These emblems were done in clay, fired, and super-imposed on wooden crosses. Sister M. Art Page 21 P atjf;| s! j (f y athematicA Students enrolling at Central Catholic High as freshmen find on their schedule, among other subjects, freshman algebra or general mathematics. As the freshmen become orientated in their mathematics classes they begin to see why they are studying mathematics. Habits such as neatness, patience, careful and discriminate thinking, formation of correct judgments, accuracy, honesty, and perseverance are the worthwhile goals set before the trainees. Students learn from classroom experiences that achievements in mathematics are satisfying, but they also discover that outcomes which cannot be measured by tests are even more important. Attitudes, habits, skills, and appreciations are developed. Students who pursue the study of mathe¬ matics during their four years of high school can’t help but appreciate the beauty of truth, especially the eternal and unchangeable Truth, (lod. ' I ' hey ought to be able to think things out for themselves and get correct solutions to the complex life problems—they received adequate training in the techniques of good thinking. Rfill ion, liioloi y Biology offers to the Catholic student a new realm of interest with tools and point of view all his own. Fundamental facts about living things are studied, showing interrelationship between plants and animals and their common service to man. Stress is placed on the fact that (lod created everything for the use of man to assist him in working out his eternal destiny, the salvation of his soul. In the physiology clas: ' es students are led to realize that they are the builders of their own physique. They are given valuable in¬ formation on the intelligent care of the body. The course is open to all students, hose who intend to study medicine, hope to enroll in a nurses’ training school, or work towards a degree in dietetics or home economics will find this course especi¬ ally helpful as a preparation for their future work. Mr. W. Zach (H.S.E.) Art, Pliysioloijy Generai cience The getieral science course offers the student a simple approach to the ' onders of everyday living. ' 1 hrough observation and some e.xperiment, the student learns to value more the air he breathes, the food and water he consumes, the earth he walks on, the heavens he dwells under, the ever fascinating plants and animals that sur¬ round him, and the heat, light, electricity, and machinery fhat fill his world. Ceneral science is a fair preview of, and an excellent preparation for any of the laboratory sciences. hurnoe iffM isp iaii g Mr. V. C. Fischer (B.K.E., H.S.F.) Physics Physics, the study of natural philosophy, emphasizes those laws which were instilled into this universe at creation. The student learns that although he might be harmed by the physical laws, they e.xist for his benefit and without many of them he could not live on this earth. The amateur physicist learns the funda¬ mental properties of mechanics, magnetism, electricity, sound, heat, color and light. He utilizes, in this subject, his knowledge of mathematics in the derivation and application of formu lae. Sister M. cle Chaiitel O.S.F. (B.A.) Physics ' The primary purpose of the study of chemistry is to teach the scientific method ; that is, the appeal to experiment. Thus the stu¬ dents are led to the humble acknowledgment of the omnipotence of the Author of nature’s laws, the secrets of which man has been per¬ mitted gradually to discover. The second aim is to acquire a body of information about the preparation, properties, and uses of chemicals which are vital to our modern life. Such information should help students to live and act more intelligently and with greater understanding in our increasingly complex civilization. Then they should be equipped to use scientific discoveries for the better¬ ment of mankind. Sister M. Patricia O.S.F. (M.S.) Chemistry (Sliemidtrt Page 27 Rev. G. Dunne (M.A., Lift. D.) Ri ' hoion, Drafti u o raitina o epartment Engineers, architects, and surveyors of the future emanate from the drafting department of Central Catholic High School. During his freshman year, the student learns orthographic pro¬ jection, surface development, and iiers|)ective, all of which include the application of descriptive geometry. Alachine detailing, gearing, and cam design, together with the principle of the slide rule become the more important studies of the sophomore. After intensive practice in the application of these fundamentals, MtNiNC ENGINL the junior draftsman is equipped with tlie knowledge and ability to make detail and assembly drawings of a large mechanical project, d ' his year the junior jiroject is a gasoline-driven, double action, water luimp. t hroughout his final year at Central, the senior draltsman ap¬ plies his knowledge of trigonometry to the study of civil surveying. From data obtained in the field, he must compute the required dis¬ tances, areas, or volumes, and dra A ' his iiroblem to scale. For the last twenty-five years, our drafting department has been offering to the drafting student numerous advantages unsurpassed by any other high school in the country. Rev. A. Iti the food laboratory the third year group studies about and prepares food for special occasions. In clothing, the student learns “to see herself as others see her.” The “point of view” and “seeing with your mind not your eyes” are oft repeated slogans which guide her along the highway of style, not fashion. Child care, with emphasis on the preventing of undesirable habits in the infants’ first year, helps to prepare the student for a happy family home. The future homemaker is taught to take a vital interest in com¬ munity affairs. By directed conversation with her father she learns about his worth and his hobbies. All these help her to find the secret of giving herself away which is the Christian way of life as taught by our Master when He walked on this earth and lived in His home at Nazareth. Sister M. This organization, composed of representatives from each confer¬ ence room and other interested students, sponsors the Christmas seal and card drive, the Lenten mission drive, the novena for the Church Unity Octave and spirit¬ ual bouquets for the most Rev. Bishop and for our Principal. St, Hilda Guild Girls of the Art department, who compose the St. Hilda Guild, have the special duties of laying out vestments for the priest and keeping the altar linens in good condition. They also prepare the altar for Mass and Benediction. The members of this organiza¬ tion elect their president, together with first and second assistants, from the junior art students at the close of the junior year. Under¬ classmen are also chosen as repre¬ sentatives for the (luild. Monthly meetings are held dur¬ ing the junior-senior art periods. Eucharistic- Marian Committpp The purpose of this committee is to develop in each student a greater love and devotion for Christ and His Blessed Mother. Many spiritual activities are spon¬ sored by the committee, the annual May Convocation, and the recita¬ tion of the daily rosary during October and May. Every student who desires may join the commit¬ tee, in addition one student is chosen as representative from each conference room. I i St, John Berchmans Society The Saint John Berchmans Society, founded November 26, 1936, has as its purpose the pro¬ motion of religious vocations among the boys. For those who belong to this organization is re¬ served the privilege of serving at A-Iass every morning in the school chapel. The members participate in the annual May Convocation, the school retreat, and assist at first Friday Benediction. Literature Committee Students’ interest in good read¬ ing is the object of this organiza¬ tion. To carry out its aim the committee compiles lists of all the Catholic books in the library, holds book and pamphlets displays in the school lobby during Catholic Book Week, and prepares material for the student body to use during re¬ treat week. By these means this organiza¬ tion tends to carry out its main purpose “to spread the Reign of Christ in the Kingdom of Christ through Catholic Literature’’. y. c, s. The aim of the Young Chris¬ tian Students, an international or¬ ganization, is first to sanctify the student himself and second to assist other students in their per¬ sonal sanctification. Here at Central the members meet regularly to discuss the pro¬ blems of life which young people face. Through this medium the students are made aw ' are of the guidance offered by the Catholic school, and acquire a deeper reali¬ zation of the part the daily Mass, the noon day visits, frequent con¬ fession and Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament play in their lives. Joanne Dugan, treasurer; Rev. J. D. Shenk, moderator; James Garvin, president; Robert Recker, vice-president; Mary Alice Dugan, secretary The Student Council is the representative body of the school. The president of each conference room automatically becomes its Student Council representative. The council’s chief duty is to formulate plans for the direction of student policies; to build student ideals and to maintain a unified school spirit. This organization has charge of the student patrol, school dances, and other school activities. Each student Council member takes a pledge to keep a high scholastic standard, to cooperate in activities, and to behave as an intelligent Catholic student should. An address in honor of our Lady, the Crowning of her beautiful statue followed by Benediction of the most Blessed Sacrament bring this colorful ceremony to a solemn close. Besides playing at the more unusual assemblies in our auditorium, it provides all the accom¬ paniments for the annual operetta and Senior Class Blay. In addition to this it lends color and dignity to the commencement exercises. During football season the band lends that spark to the ‘Fighting Irish’ spirit which enkindles new enthusiasm in the spectators. Its intricate formations are perfected only after many hours of drill after school. Besides this the band adds zest to other activities such as assemblies, rallies aiul special exhibitions, and it participates in the May Convocation. The senior students of mathe¬ matics edit and publish the Al- Geo-Trig. Through this paper the students learn the interesting details which made mathematics important in the lives of men in each passing generation. Special emphasis is placed on current use of mathematics in the scientific world today but work taking place in the various math classes in the school is not omitted. That num¬ bers can be fun is also prbved in the humor column of this paper. The Library Club is composetl of student members who assist the librarians in the work of supervi¬ sion, book circulation, and keeping the library in order. Besides these duties they check on attendance, pamphlet and mag¬ azine rack and assist wherever needed. This club, known as the “Lit- O-Lites” was first organized in 19.S2. e6 Ithough his big job is that of Central’s Athletic Director, Mr. Patrick McCarty is known for his ability as a football coach. H is 1944 team, playing with odds against it, was the only one to “cross the river” and subdue the Waite Indians. This they did not only once but twice. His stay here was interrupted by Uncle Sam for whom he saw service. During his ab¬ sence, after his release from the army, he served as football coach at St. Ambrose Col¬ lege, Davenport, Iowa. Mr. McCarty first came to Central as coach in 1943. He had previously been at Ursuline high school, Youngstown, (9hio. Mr. P. McCarty (B.S. in P.E.) Head Coach In the spring of ’47 he returned to again take over as football coach at his Alma Mater. Mr. McCarty has done a fine job as athletic director and much credit is due to him for his work as head football coach. Walter Zach, as a senior at Central, was a member of the All-City football ream in 1939. After furthering his education It the University of Dayton, he joined Uncle sam’s Army in 1943, ,vhere he served with :he Office of Strategic Services. In 1946 Air. Znch returned to C.C. H.S. as a faculty mem¬ ber and assumed the responsibilities of as- iistant coach and teach- ;r of physiology. T his year he became coach of the light¬ weight football and Mr. W. Zach (B.S.E.) eight Coach basketball teams, director of the track team, and instructor of physiology and boj ' s’ art. Page 106 yY iiy basketball coach whose team is City Champs and Regional Runners-up is plenty good. ' I ' hat is the record of Mr. Law¬ rence Bondy, Central’s 1947-48 basketball mentor. A graduate of Central, Coach Rondy re¬ turned to Central in ’42 taking over the duties of coach of the lightweight and fresh¬ men football teams and lightweight basketball team. The freshmen won City League Cham¬ pionship that year. In 1943-44 he became backfield coach for the varsity and coach of the lightweight cage quintet. That year the lightweights cap¬ tured the City League Championship. Lhe call to service in 1944 also claimed , „ Mr. Lawrence Bondv Air. nondy. After an B.S.E. absence of two years Basketball Coach he returned to take over the tasks of head football coach, head basketball coach and Director of Athletics. In the 1947-48 season Air. Bondy shared the worries of the varsity with Air. AlcCarty and assumed the role of head basketball coach. fter his graduation from C.C.H.S. iii 1938, Paul O’Rourke attended the University of Dayton where he was active in athletics. He served in the Army from 1943 until 1946. Upon return to civil¬ ian life he b e c a m e coach of the light¬ weight and freshman football teams and teacher of national and social problems. This - year he was coach of the freshman football , . j. Mr. P. O’Rourke team and instructor of (B.A.) commercial law. At Freshman Coach the end of the football season, a banquet was given to honor his team, the freshman city champs. TOf 1? He cheerfully gave all he had, hut especially when playing Waite. JAMES SHEEHAN Jim said little but did much. His hard work on the field made him known to those who came in con¬ tact with him. RONALD SPILIS Ron, who was shifted from tackle to fullback, took things in stride a,nd was able to cope with the best of them. JOSEPH THOMAS Joe, a small by.ndle of fighting spirit, made him¬ self felt, if not seen, on the gridiron. enior JOSEPH WESTER Joe, besides being an excellent place kicker, could be seen giving opponents 1 rough time at tackle. STEPHEN WILHELM Steve, who covered the field at all parts of the game, w ' ill be remembered for his flashy running and passing. DLANE WISNIEWSKI Duane, by his expert punting and plunging, pulled his team out of many tight spots. 1 ALBERT BALL all miss this speedy backfieid man whose passing ability overshadowed his shifty running. ROBERT BRAUN Although handicapped by injuries, this big, rangy end could catch that pigskin when it looked impossible. WILLIAM FLYNN On defense, Bill really shined. He returned from service to help his school reach greater heights. TAMES GASIOROWSKI Gazzy was aggressive and had that will-to-win spirit. These features won him the “most val¬ uable player” award. PHILLIP GROTE That fighting spirit cer¬ tainly was visible in Ph il’s style of play. We hope someone else can be found to fulfill his assign¬ ment as tackle. JAMES HEINTSCHEL Jim lived up to all ex¬ pectations, for he came through with a strong, powerful type of ball playing in the guard posi¬ tion. THOMAS KUEBLER In the position of pilot, Tom pulled his team out of some tight spots. A real athlete, he worked overtime for a good squad. EUGENE OWUZARAK Orsi fought hard con¬ sistently a n d his fine blocking helped to make the team click. DONALD DARTT ] ' )on could center the ball in a hack’s hip pocket if necessary. A great (leal will be expected of him when football season approaches again. WILLIAM GLEESPEN Bill was considered one of the “more” rugged guards on the team this year. Me will be “most” rugged in the city next year. RICHARD GUST Dick rvas one of the fastest atid shiftiest backs on the team. He will be a constant threat to all opposition in the coming season. RONALD KAMINSKI A wiz at signal calling and even greater at block¬ ing, Ron could knock any one out of the way. I JULIUS SZAKOVITS This big player was a determined anci aggress¬ ive lad. He was ready to give his assistance whenever called on. JOHN STOEPLER This big junior guard will return next year with that spirit and drive of his which makes a Cen¬ tral football team. LEE SUPER Lee, a junior end, will return next fall to lend his aid. His spirit is the kind needed in a good ball club. GERALD McCLOSKEY Mac, our big rangy end, made the All-North- vestern Ohio eleven this tear. He tvill return for his third year of varsity service. THOMAS McHUGH In his first year of var- s i t y competition, Tom showed the Irish spirit in fullback position. He has two big years ahead. JOHN RASTER Coming to Central in his junior 3 ' ear, Johnnie proved his worth at the halfback spot. We ex¬ pect a lot of him during his senior year. ROBERT RECKER Bob’s small stature seemed to be an asset to him. His drive and shiftiness will provide punch at the halfback spot next season. lOSEPH kWIAEOWSKI Joe vas a true fighter for the scarlet and gray. M ' e’ll look for that kind of playing from him i,n the future. MICHAEL LANGEL Although Mike is one r)f the smallest boys on the team, he is considered mightv.
