Lock Club. The club was named after Di. Ethel D. Lock who is a member of our History department. Miss Lorene M. Roller of our English and Latin depart- ments is the faculty adviser of the club. The Future Teachers have set themselves up as a service organization for Center High. They have functioned as a body in promoting the Lost and Found Department and by aiding the various regu- lar members of our staff in filing and paper checking. During the National Education Week the club made special efforts to faciliate the functions of the teach- ing profession with the slogan, Proud to Teach. The club has met every second and fourth Fridays all year with special programs planned around col- lege life, self improvement, health, financing educa- tion, and Shall I Become a Teacher? This Future Teacher pledge has been taken by each member. The good teacher requires: Physical vitality. l will try to keep my body well and strong. Mental vigor. I will study daily to keep my mind active and alert. Moral discrimination. I will seek to know the right and live by it. Wholesome personality. I will cultivate in myself good will, friendliness. poise, upright bearing, and careful speech. Helpfulness. I will learn the art of helping others by doing helpful things daily in school and home. Knowledge. I will fill my mind with worthy thoughts by observing all that is beautiful in the world around me, by reading the best books, and by association with the best companions. Leadership. I will make my influence count on the side of right. English LORENE M, ROLLER Advisor of FTA Asst. Advisor Sophomores Latin DONNA DeSHAFFON President Y -vhkf ROW 1. S. Monsees, R. Carlson, B. Rye, S. The main purpose of this organization, under the supervision of Mr. Owen, is to furnish the students who have interests above and beyond the classroom level a chance to develop their interests. Some of the interesting and exciting experiments of the twenty-three members are, a nutrition experiment with rats, a miniature power plant, a photoelectric relay, fer- mentation of molasses and distillation of the alcohol, refrigeration and a kymogroph. lt is felt by all the members of the club that the knowledge they haved gained has expanded their yearning for science. CENTER HlGH SCHOOL PTA 1956-1957 The program theme for the year was Education for Life. The programs on narcotics, home-work, co-curricular and future plans for our school were presented at the meetings. These proved very interesting and educational for all parents, teachers and students who attended. The big event of the year was the carnival held on the memorial field with all units ot the district taking part. This carnival was the project of the year to raise funds for the budget. The outstanding event accomplished for the year was the council assuming the responsibility of planning and ad- ministrating the scholarship fund. Another activity of the PTA is the Senior Reception held every spring. 64 Mrs, VV. H. Practice started August l5: the girls presented their Hrst halt-time show to the parents in the Memorial Stadium at the Harrisonville- Center game on October 5, l956. Halt-time shows were also given at the homecoming game on October l9, and at the Lee's Summit game on October 26. To add to their list ot performances, the girls gave a demonstration at a pep assembly preceding the Harrisonville game. The season was climaxed when the Corps, together with the Marching Band, participated in the Halloween Parade in Independence. The Corps was proud to receive a letter ot congratulation from the ln- dependence Chamber ot Commerce. ln the following years, we expect the popularity and size of the Drum and Bugle Corps to expand. 68 On Parade l lil'- lf' 4 Iv 5 X .. ll l, Drum Moior Riley Henry 5 Maioreftes Wrighf, S. To launch an excellent Track season the boys repre- sented Center well by placing sixth in the State lndoor Meet at Columbia with Stanley Ratliff taking 5th in the 65 yard low hurdles and 3rd in the 60 yard high hur- dles. The mile relay team posted a second place. In intraconference meets Center went undefeated. The squad overpowered Pleasant Hill 78W and 39V2, slipped by Ruskin 66 to 52, and smothered Grandview 75 to 43. One of the highlights of the season for our cindermen was capturing first place in the William Jewell Class B Invitational Relays at Liberty, by means of a victory in the final event, the mile relay. Bruce Brient placed 3rd in the l00 yard dash, Ratliff set a new record of 20.3 seconds in the l80 yard low hurdles, Carter Douglas' placed second. Douglas then captured first in the high hurdles and Ratliff took third in that event. Vernie Hot- tle tied for 2nd in the pole vault, the 880 yard relay team placed third in their event, and Bob Wenski cap- tured first in the broad iump, but it was Graff, Brient, Beck, and Douglas coming through with the victory in the final event that brought Center the laurels. Center's trackmen placed first in eight events and in doing so broke four records to emerge Midwest Con- ference Track Champs with 54 points. With this 54 point total, the cindermen regained the Midwest traveling trophy which had been held for the past year by Lee's Summit. Bruce Brient was clocked at l0 seconds flat for a new conference record, the 880 yard relay team of Graff, Ratliff, Bullard, and Brient set a record of l:34.8, Stanley Ratliff flew over the T80 yard low hur- dles in a record breaking time of 21.4 seconds and the mile relay team of Morgan, Douglas, Graff, and Brient stepped off the distance in 3:32.5 for the final record. The boys could not be slowed down. They seized their third outstanding victory in the district competition at Warrensburg by accumulating a grand total of 55V2 points to 4l for the second place team. Stanley Ratliff set a Class B meet record with a victory in the high hurdles and Carter Douglas placed second. The 880 yard relay team, the mile relay team, Bob Wenski in the broad iump, and Ratliff in the low hurdles were also victorious.
