THE HEART AND EAGLE icikggg that Hora and I had packed our bags two days before Once on our may rt was onlr a short trme untrl we reached Reno Nevada Here we saw Phyllrs Gathrop the grrl wrth so many love affarrs She had taken up resrdence there for a short trme and she was ready to leave she came on vnth us At Salt Lake Crty Franklrn Edwards who had become a Mormon was loadrng a large famrly rnto hrs small bus We were so hugh rn the arr we could not see hom many wrves he was brrngrng along Franklrn we learned later plays the prccolo dur rng hrs lersure moments Passrng over Grand unctron l savs Annrse Dean come out of a lrttle red brrck burldrng Annrse was teachrng krndergarten because she lrkes to tell storres Stopprng at the Denver Theatre for a show Dallas Moody and hrs popularly known Moody Harmonrzers appeared as one of the features Dallas told us that Forest Wrlson carrred on an apothecary busrness rn Denver l'orest was recently rn the headlrnes because of a hold up staged rn hrs plac of busrness Arrrvrng at Center we were greeted by Ralph Bowles and hrs charmrng wrfe formerly Alma Kramer Bryan Bowers and hrs wrfe were also rn the recervrng lrne and although Florence was not a member of our class we all were glad to see her so happy Whrle we were strll on the held we saw another large plane about to land and to our surprrse there was Mary Behrl who had become a successful coach rn the Eat Helen Glover a mathematrcs rnstructor rn St Lours and Frances Sylvester who was Dean of Women at Smrth Frances was carryrng a brg solrtarre around wrth her We all knew that the grrls at Smrth wouldn t have a lovely dean very long The prlot of the plane was Judge Savrlle Browne so no wonder the grrls all looked so happy I know he had just told them somethrng flatterrng He graduated from Dartmouth and has been on the bench for seven years A plane from the north crrcled over the arrport and landed Dr Homer Sydney Varns descended wrth great gusto We were all greatly shocked when we learned that he was not a dentrst but a vcterrnary and the large tooth hangrng from hrs watch charn was the emblem of a lodge A large car drove up to the port and Frank hllrs a well to do grocery dealer got out wrth the ard of hrs negro chauffer Frank has become qurte skrlled rn a ronautrcs and he now does stunt flyrng rn a glrder Next came a plane of pure vvhrte vsrth tvso red crosses on the wrngs Mrldred Pettengrll was rn our mrdst all dressed rn a whrte nurses unrform wrth a red cross on her cap Twenty three f .... ..., .-,.....,,. QV 'k .P 'LTHEHEARTANDEAGLEJ' 'k J' 'L 'F Class P CCY By ERMADEAN BuRNs NE DAY ln the mrddle of july of the year l942 the postman left me an envelope whrch appeared more rnterestmg than the others as rt was postmarked CENTER and I seemed to know rnstmctrvely that rt was from some member of the CLASS OF THIRTY After a few moments reflectlon I recognized the wrrtmg to be the worthy scrawl of Ralph Bowles There had been some Improvement rn hrs wrltmg for I could now read rt l Immediately opened the envelope and found much: to my pleasure that the CLASS OF THIRTY was gorng to have a reunlon dunng the great Pan American Arr EXPOSIIIOD at the transcontmental arrport at Center I Immediately drove from my home rn Beverly l-lllls to the Paramount Studros to as an extra for several years We planned our trrp together The Pacrflc Flyer Rarlway seemed the most ef flcrent and qulckest way to get there unless we took a plane We were to leave ln a week wlth short stops at Reno Salt Lake Cxty and Denver In my excrtement as I was leavrng the burldmg I turned rn the wrong drrectxon and found myself ln another studro As I was about to leave unnoticed I cast a glance at the head of the director who appeared strangely famrllar Where had I seen a per son wlth harr of that color wrth a llttle cowllck rn front which made rt stand up? Cur roslty got the better of me so I slrpped rnto a seat ln the rear of the studro to walt until I could remember that famrlrar charactenstlc The Symphony Orchestra was playmg a score from one of the modern operas and when the score was fmrshed and the players began to leave I walked down to the dn rector and presented myself to Kenneth Adams He had not heard about the reunron so after I had explained he decided to go wrth us to Colorado to meet the members of our class and accordlng to hrs suggestion I was to charter a special car for our trlp At my home a telegram had come all the way from Chrna' lhaymon Walker who was a mrssronary rn China and had mvested money rn the production of tea now a wealthy man was comrng over rn hrs large tn motored plane and could take a number of passengers It was then unnecessary to make further plans for transportation Thaymon arrived and we were all anxrous to be on our way So eager were we Page Twenty-two ! .---u J.--'--.,.
