EDITORS Lynda Douglass Jimmy Journey 70NC0PIN 1367 CENTENARY COLLEGE SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA ! miiM0 . % ! N I N « %., ,«■- ■■ • ' ' A It is inconceivable and of great pain that this journey will end. The mind, the heart re- fuse to accept it. We are for this instant traveling together and looking out at the world. I have thought that perhaps this is all that we ultimately do to each other— point to all the beautiful things as we pass them and say, Look. AAy eyes ache for some flash of recognition. There is no answer. I have no success. Finally, I will not arrive anywhere. There is no sum total of experience, and I will not know where I have come from or gone to. Yet I have come out of this isolation like a child yelling into the light of his newborn world, yelling his head off because the world is flashing with color and sound. Many of the sights and sounds still spin by me and I cannot take account of them all. You have shown me more than I alone could 10 And now the grass seems to grow upward and the trees tower dark and green above you, giving off a light that seems to come from the leaves them- selves, and the earth smells mys- terious and rich. I have looked at it all before, but now it is strangely alive. 8b ' ■ 0F L  I have begun this journey in loneliness and fear. But I will not lose the growth your sight has brought me, for now I have looked out on the world of terror and pity and pain from an isolated thing, lovely in a dark and lonely sky, singing and shining in all that frightened void. 13 It is as if you create a separate world. In your mind it is a world of fragments— light and color and darkness. If there is tenderness and if there is a sense of sharing, somehow the bewildering array as it moves by enables us to forget that we are all on a journey which ends, always ends. 16 A • 1 ' J Tall pines and enthusiastic eyes— A Conference on Student Life— An atmosphere of communication— Everyone asked, Where have we been? So clandestine is this honorary group that the members themselves were completely ignorant of its existence until this very day. Perhaps some explanation is appropriate concerning (1) the necessity of such an organization, (2) how its members are chosen, and (3) how it differs from other groups of this type. However, we are not going to offer one. Let it suffice to say that Who Do exists solely for the glorification of those faithful, hardworking individuals whom the limelight misses— in short, those who does but ain ' t got praised. Because of the abstruse qualifications and the intense selectivity with which Who Do members are chosen, it was decided in the initial drafting of the charter that Who Do would tap each year exactly one-forth-plus-one as many members as that other groups of this type. It is therefore, with great pride and respect that the Yoncop ' n staff welcomes these six outstanding in- dividuals, persons who have contributed untold personal achievements to the Centenary Campus— We give you Who Do 1967. 81 ' 83 Virginia Rodgers President Joy Anderson Vice-President Lynda Wurster Recording Secretary Genie Lyles Corresponding Secretary Elizabeth Scarborough Treasurer Susan Briggs Pledge Trainer President Virginia Rodgers Vice-President Joy Anderson Recording Secretary .... The varsity cheerleaders play a vital part in the athletic events at Centenary. Without them, spirit— proper, positive spirit— would be negative. They have provided capable leadership throughout the year, and have changed the pic- ture of spirit at Centenary from one of a howling donneybrook to one of subdued enthusiasm. So, to give credit where credit is due, the Yoncop n salutes our five— er, six— er, however many we have— Cheerleaders. Three faces of genuine spirit 123 ! J f H J r 125 MEN ' S INTRAMURAL Front Row: David Dent, Ed Cabra, Jonathan Cooke Second Row: Reed Yates, Gary Albright, Tom Stever, Coach Harless The purpose of the men ' s intramural program is to provide opportunity for students to acquire skills in adult rec- reative activities and to sponsor co-recre- ational events. Every man enrolled in Centenary is eligible for membership and may part icipate in any of the offered activities. During the course of the year, the men ' s intramural program offers these activities; football, table tennis, golf, a cross-country race, volleyball, paddle- ball, handball, basketball, badminton, softball, and tennis. This year the football title went to Kappa Sigma. The table tennis singles was taken by David Kerstein and doubles was taken by Kerstein and Ben Silber. The cross-country race was won by Gene Gillis. David Kerstein and Ben Silber 126 WOMEN ' S RECREATIONAL ASSOCIATION Left to Right: Jeannie Butler, Gail Morgan, Marilyn Padgett, Nan Cornfield, Cheryl Love, Vivian Gannaway, Anita Jewell The purpose of the Women ' s Recrea- tional Association (WRA) is to provide opportunity for women students at Cen- tenary to acquire skills in recreative ac- tivities. Every women enrolled at Cen- tenary is eligible for membership and may participate in any of the offered ac- tivities. During the course of the school year the WRA offers these activities: tennis, volleyball, a bike hike, badminton, rifle- ry, ping pong, basketball, softball, and archery. At the beginning of this year, Joy An- derson won the tennis singles. Volleyball has been won by the Independents with Chi Omega coming in second and Zeta Grey third. 127 MEN ' S INTRAMURAL FOOTBALL The men ' s intramural football com- pleted another big season with eleven teams participating this year. The en- tering teams were: Killer ' s Boys, TKE, DA, Grey Ghosts, Cossas Robbers, Kap- pa Sigma, KA. Blackhawks, Wimps, TKE II, and Rotary. The teams were divided into two lea- gues. Each team played all of the other teams, with the ones in their own league constituting conference games. The top two teams in each league went to the championship playoffs. The championship playoffs this year pitted Killers Boys against KA in one game and Kappa Sigma against Cossas Robbers in the second. The Champion- ship game the next night saw Kappa Sigma emerge the victors over the KA team. FIRST PLACE: Kappa Sigma GIRLS VOLLEYBALL This year there were twelve teams participating in girls volleyball. The teams were: Zeta Grey, Chi Omega, Daughters of Themis, Alpha Xi Delta, Pickett ' s Girls, Zeta Blue, Owls, Fuzzies, Gymnasts, Straws, Cardinals, and the Independents. The championship this year was won by the Independents, with Chi Omega and Zeta Grey coming in second and third respectively. Handicapped by a downpour of chilly rain, the Centenary gridders fell victims of a 42-0 shellacking by the visitors. While the Centenary team was badly beaten in the scoring and in the statis- tics, they gave 100 per cent on both offense and defense. Loyola had the best of it throughout the game but Cen- tenary ' s boys never gave up. VARSITY BASKETBALL Head Coach Orvis Sigler Coach Doug Mooty We are going to be short; and we may not win a lot of ball games, but this will be -an exciting team to watch. This was the comment made by head coach Orvis Sigler prior to the beginning of the 1966-67 Centenary basketball sea- son. A few people began to wonder from what sooth-sayer he got his prophetic wisdom, for it certainly was destined to be a true prediction. The ' 66- ' 67 Gents were men who countered their disadvantages of height with the most potent weapon any team could possess — the desire to win ! This desire was intrinsic; and the only evidence of it, that a spectator could see, was the way these men played the game. Gent fans saw these men working like a smooth, five-cylinder engine. This not on- ly produced a great amount of excitement, but also our share of victories ( for the campaign). Considering all the opposition which they faced it seems that this was both a memorable and pro- fitable season for the Centenary Gentle- men. (I. FRESHMEN-VARISTY GAME Freshmen players carry Coach Shoemaker off the court after their victory over the varsity. ■k ■- , H 1 jjffwy y P ■ i f « I4I FRESHMEN BASKETBALL Coach Larry Shoemaker The 1966-67 edition of Centenary ' s Gentlets showed that there are brighter things in store for Centenary ' s basketball future by nosing out this year ' s varsity- Gents 81-79, in the ninth annual Var- sity-Freshman Game. The frosh, one of the tallest teams ever fielded by Centenary, average about 6 ' 5 , even without their curly locks. Throughout their game schedule, the Gentlet ' s height advantage has allowed them to control the boards and pro- vided the spectators with good, hard- nosed basketball. Coach Larry Shoemaker has done a fine job in preparing these boys for varsity action, by molding them into a smooth working unit. Several outstanding pros- pects for the 1967-68 varsity Gents keep coach Orvis Sigler ' s eyes gleaming with future expectations. Gary Brodlieb Robert Dueease Dave Frasizer Ken Hillyard 142 Hollis Jacobie Kerry Keller James Lainhart Robert Lang Randy Prescott James Smith Mike Tebbe Gregg Weis Donald Wi! 143 VARSITY BASEBALL Coach Doug Mooty Centenary, despite its having only one player bat over .300, posted one of its finest won-lost marks during the 1966 season (18-6). The leading hitter for the Gentlemen, whose batting averaged .245 as a team, was catcher Dellis Germann who pounded the ball for a .353 average. Bringing the Gents into the 1967 sea- son, big Del found support from team- mates Charlie Red Eye Grigsby, per- sistent Ronnie Warren, rapidly-develop- ing Lowell Mask, and several up-and- coming freshmen such as Sonny Moss. With strong pitching from James Gillis- pie and the remainder of a young but highly competitive staff, the Gentlemen came up with another very respectable season. One of the most interesting aspects of the 1967 season was the fact that there were only two seniors on the diamond, co-captains Phil Jennings and Jeff Vic- tory. As with some of the other sports at the ' Nary, the baseball outlook seems to have a golden glitter to it. Utilizing the experience gained this year, the Gents should provide fans with great excitement again next season. 144 Lowell Mask Charles Grigsby James Gillespie Bob Lang 145 Mike Reeves Ed Schiro Dave Tadich Sonny Moss Robert McDonald 146 v ® David Basinger Dellis Germann Chuck VanSteen James Smith VARSITY GOLF LEFT TO RIGHT: Guy Bent, Buddy Lockett, Bob Monstadt, Terry Stevens, Jimmy Brown, Elmo Cox, and Larry Stevens. Coach Morton Braswell Bolstered by the consistent play of returning lettermen Jimmy Brown of Bastrop, Louisiana, and Larry and Terry Stevens of Shreveport, the 1967 Gent golfers experienced a highly enjoyable season. From the Southern Mississippi Invitational until the completion of the schedule, the Gents became increasingly strong in the matches. Adding to this strength was returning squadman Elmo Cox, along with three very promising freshmen — Guy Bent, Buddy Lockett, and Bob Monstadt. With only Ole Pro Brown graduating, the prospect looks exceedingly bright for the 1968 Gent linksters. The novel aspect of this year ' s team was the fact that accompanying the men on some of the matches was one of the South ' s leading women amateurs. Miss Jeannie Butler, a freshman at Centenary, promises to bring laurels not only to her- self, but to The ' Nary as well. Jeannie Bi; 147 WOMEN ' S GYMNASTICS Coach Vannie Edwards Firs t row, left to right: Marianne Woolner, Diane Masse, Karen Lively. Second row: Mary Camille Traweek, Marnie Bankson, Janie Speaks, Arlette Ramsey. Third row: Linda Stephenson, Susan McDonnell, Nancy Kotsch. Travel is the keynote for the Centenary gymnastics team. Vannie Edwards and his ten women gymnasts have presented numerous clinics and exhibitions through- out the United States, including six cities in Louisiana, two in Texas, and three in Tennessee. The highlight of this year ' s activities was a fabulous nine-day tour of Monter- rey and Mexico City, Mexico. The Mexi- cans were not only very hospitable, but were also the most enthusiastic crowds that the team had ever encountered. Competition commenced with a trian- gular meet pitting Ohio State, Penn State and Centenary. Victorious in this meet, held in Columbus, Ohio, the gym- nasts motored to Kent, Ohio, where they defeated Kent State. The team also faced the University of Southern Illinois in a dual meet later in the year at Carbondale, Illinois. The team also attended the National Championships, the Mid-South Meet, the Women ' s Intercollegiates, and the North American Championships. Coach Edwards deserves a lion ' s share of the credit for the team ' s performances, for he unselfishly devotes his time to bet- ter the team and the sport of gymnastics. 148 Diane Masse Karen Lively Mary Camille Traweek Linda Stephenson Marnie Bankston 149 Nancy Kotsch Centenary is privileged to have on its gymnastics team two of the best women gymnasts on the North American continent, Susan McDonnell and Janie Speaks. 150 Individual help is one of the features of the clinic. CENTENARY HOSTS GYMNASTICS CLINIC The third Centenary International Gymnastics Clinic was held this year on February 3rd and 4th. The clinic was attended by 1300 people from 36 dif- ferent states. The Canadian Women ' s team and the Mexican Men ' s team were also on hand to help with the clinic. The highlight of the two day work- shop was a triangular meet between Canada, Oklahoma, and Centenary, in which the Centenary girls came out on top. Coach Edwards called the clinic one of the largest in the country and was pleased with the number of people who parti- cipated. 151 VARSITY TENNIS The 1967 Tennis Gentlemen, coached by Ivan Harless, completed another suc- cessful season highlighted by the annual Southern Mississippi Invitational Tourna- ment and thirteen dual matches. The squad, led by sophomores Bob Strayer, of Erie, Pennsylvania and Gary Sutton of Long Beach, California, gained valuable experience from this spring ' s competition and should provide Cente- nary with an even brighter future in the coming years. We hope no one is offended by this rather special and unusual treatment of left-overs. We aren ' t, and besides we didn ' t have enough to do anyway. The Editors 201 Journey and Douglass pay their two gun tribute to a Yoncopin neither will ever forget. It ' s called a sense of sharing— two people working to- gether as editors to put together something called a yearbook. The times were hectic and unbelievable, yet fun. The moments will expand to create a memory. I wasn ' t a science major, so he asked me my major. I mumbled something about English. This set him to rummaging through the stacks of papers and magazines on his desk. He had just finished reading an ar- ticle comparing science and the Humanities. He continued the search for the misplaced in- formation. His enthusiasm and excitement became my own. A fifteen minute episode in a four year experience that can be called the realization of education stands untouched by time. The exchange between individuals, the communication between student and teacher is so seldom this significant. With this tribute we close lhe 1967 Yoncopin. Dr. John B . Entrikin, Chairman of the Department of Chemistry
