The grid sport was resumed at Centenary in the fall of 1947 after a war-time recess. The return of pep rallies, parades, and a homecoming game brought new enthusiasm to the campus. At the end of the season, however, the college announced that lack of financial support for subsidized football made it necessary to discontinue the sport on that basis. The Maroon and White Gentlemen were humbled in their 1947 debut by a hard-blocking, hard-driving University of Houston eleven with a score of 19-7. The Gents ' score was made on an 85-yard sprint by James Francis, 145-pound freshman, who took a Houston punt late in the second quarter and raced from his 15 to the goal. Bob Barlow ' s conversion gave the Gents their seventh point. Francis and Humphries stood out offensively for the Gents, with J. B. Sclifo and Barlow doing their share of the tackling. Although the Gents played their hardest to win this initial contest, the Houston Cougars proved too much for them. The fine blocking and running of the Cougars marked them as a team to watch in years to come.

Both coaches are from Cameron State Junior College of Lawton, Oklahoma. Coach Thompson was a football star in college and also played professional ball with the Green Bay Packers. He holds an M.A. in physical education from Oklahoma A. M. In 1934 he went to Cameron as assistant coach and became athletic director in 1939. During the war he served in the Navy, spend- ing seventeen months in the Pacific. In his initial talk to the student body, Coach Thomp- son said that although the team might not win all of its games the first year, it would display plenty of fight and spirit. This predicition held true, and the students of Centenary were proud of the sportsman- ship and great effort on the part of the coaches and team. Mrs. W. K. Megarity Secretary Athletic Department B.
