One of the most important days in the history of Centenary College was that of Tuesday, February 17, 1948. On that day President Joe J. Mickle operated the bulldozer which moved the first earth preparatory to construc- tion of the new $756,000 Science Hall. It is the present plan that the building be com- pleted in time for the opening of school in the fall of 1949. Mr. Paul M. Brown, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, was master of ceremonies for the ground breaking. Bishop Paul E. Martin, who is pictured with President Mickle to the right, was principal speaker for the event. He spoke on the close relationship between science and religion as symbolized by the church-related college. Other prominent guests on the program in- cluded George D. Wray, chairman of the Science Hall committee; J. K. Cannon, com- manding general of the air training com- mand; Dean Robert P. McCutchen of the graduate school of Tulane University; Robert M. Lester, of the Carnegie Foundation; W. Scott Wilkinson, president of the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce; John McW. Ford, Commissioner of Finance of the city of Shreveport, and Col. A. C. Strickland, Com- manding Officer of Barksdale Field.

Giving the year its social impetus are the rush parties held by the fraternal organizations in September. This mad whirl of fun leaves the freshmen in a spin, and the upper-classmen with " circles. " The final day of sign- ing bids and pledging is one of joy and relief. Thus ends the " endurance contest " by which neophytes be- come Greeks.
