And, since we know from other years How swift the flight of youth and fame, We seek a place where we may pause To write our name. So, for the ones in days to come Who will turn back with longing look, Remembering our Senior days, We leave this book. I Mr. Mills Mr. Ray Mills, our new superintendent, is a man whose achievements in the field of education are noteworthy. He holds a R.S. from Wilmington College and an M.A. from Miami University. He has recently completed a year of graduate study in Curriculum Development and in School Business Management at Ohio State University. Mr. Mills is experienced as a teacher, principal, curriculum director, director of pupil personnel services, and assistant superintendent. He has also served for eight years as superintendent of the Mount Giliead Exempted Village Schools. He is presently a member of the Board of Directors of the Ohio Association of School Ad¬ ministrators and has received state and national awards for his contributions to education. In 1967, he was named to “Who’s Who in American Education.” Mr. Mills has shown enthusiasm in his approach to his new position; he is a welcome addition to our community’s school system. Mr. Ray Mills at work with his secretary, Mrs. Bemadine Love. , Mr. Brandon A good school must have a responsible principal, and in Mr. Robert Brandon, Celina Senior High School has much of which to be proud. Mr. Brandon devotes a tremendous amount of time to his work — us — as well as being active in the community. He is easily accessible to students as well as to the faculty, and often is in conference with students and teachers. Mr. Brandon was graduated from Manchester College with a B. S. degree, and obtained his Master of Science degree from Indiana Univer¬ sity. He has the background and the experience necessary for a good principal; CSHS owes much to him. Mrs. Iris White, Mr. Brandon’s secretary, is an indispensable aid to all of us at CSHS. She effici¬ ently performs the many tasks necessary to keep our school organized, and she is the one to whom everyone turns when he needs information, sup¬ plies, or even an aspirin. Mrs. White received a B. A. from Denison University and was grad¬ uated from Dickinson Secretarial School. Mrs. Iris White Mrs. White and Mr. Brandon 7 School Board Sitting: Mr. Russell Laffin, Dr. Louis J. Finkelmeier, President; Mr. Don M. Purdy. Standing: Mr. Wilson Warrick, Mr. Robert Harbage. Our school board, composed of men in whom the com¬ munity has demonstrated trust and confidence by electing them to their posts, is the main policy-making body in the school system. These men, all well respected in Celina, have capably handled the situations which have arisen during the past year. It is due to their competence that our schools are run so efficiently, for the school board is the channel through which all important business must pass. We owe a debt of gratitude to these fine people. Miss Erma Evans has been invaluable in her position as clerk of the school board. Her efficiency and her dedica¬ tion to her work has made her one of the school’s most highly respected assistants. Miss Erma Evans 8 They Oil the Machinery Mr. Ron Holstein Mrs. Ida VanCamp In a school of our size, the principal can’t deal as intimately with the students as can the counselors, Mrs. Ida VanCamp and Mr. Ronald Holstein; they are always prepared to help students with their prob¬ lems or with questions concerning colleges, scholarships, and scholastic grants. So that our administration is not bogged down by details which must be attended to each day, it is assisted by the office staff, which consists of responsible students. The staff acts as the “long arm of the law,” often running all over the building to perform their various tasks. Row 1: Mrs. VanCamp, P. Adams, D. Wilson, B. Beckstedt, L. Slusser, B. Brandts, J. It in¬ cludes grammar and usage, literature, mechanics, and even social graces. Our art department has also tried its hand at scenery-making and art competition. 1 C Of the three foreign languages taught at Celina Senior High School, Latin is the classical, fundamental language, and French, and Spanish are the conversational and very modern languages. All three teachers are interested in having their students work on projects and reports which are helpful in teaching the language or its background. Every year sees someone try to blow up the chemistry lab or donate to someone’s lunch the remains of a dissected frog. The vocational department at CSHS is set up to teach particular skills and to put these skills into use in practical situations. This is why the home economics classes have labs, the vocational training courses have COE and DCT, and the wood work¬ ing and other craft courses have shops. The commercial world is a growing and a prosperous one; jts leaders need to be educated in their fields. Mr. Ronald Mendenhall — Ohio Northern University — B.S., Ball State University; American Gov¬ ernment, Economics, Senior Class Advisor. Covering many aspects of our life and history is the term “social studies”, and even in four years we can’t learn as much as is covered by this field, though our class instructors try to help us accomplish this feat. Starting as freshmen with civics and working through world and American history, we finally study the govern¬ ment and our nation’s economics in our Senior year. Speech Life at CSHS is a complicated one. Though we all participate in or make use of physical educa¬ tion, the library, or study halls, not everyone takes speech or journalism or drivers’ education. These courses are not just period fillers—they contain fundamen¬ tals which are valuable to us all. In fact, the variety of choices from which a student can pick his electives is one of the reasons Celina Senior is such a growing school. Aid. 17 Could school he compulsory without bus drivers to drive the students at a distance to the school, cooks to prepare delectable meals for the students, or janitors to keep the beautiful halls beautiful? These people are taken for granted by all of us yet they go about their jobs day by day so that our school days may be a little more pleasant. People such as these diligent workers deserve more praise and recognition than they receive. Jose “Joe” Macedo is the American Field Service exchange student of the year 1968. He resides with Mr. and Mrs. James Rodgers and their two sons, Brian and Warren. Joe came to us from Crucero, Peru, in South America. He lives with his brother, Hector, and his three sisters, Norma, Elizabeth, and Edith, in Puno, Peru, where his family members can obtain adequate education training. Among the courses being taken by Joe are physics, English, analysis, and typing. He comments that he en¬ joys his classes very much. During the 1968 football season, Joe was an active football player. Joe had no problem adapting to life on the Rodgers’ farm. Although he misses his Peruvian family a great deal, he thinks that America is a splendid country and has been continuously eager to learn everything that he can about our people and their traditions. Joe’s hobbies range from hunting to writing poetry. His humble, friendly, open-minded character marks him as a valuable asset to our foreign exchange program. To him we wish the greatest of luck in the future. First speech in front of the student body. Juniors are starting to look back just a little bit to the days when 1969 seemed a century away. They re¬ member all the parties, the ball games, the record hops, and the committees. But most of all, they look forward to next year. Sophomores are looking forward to being upperclassmen, and some have already begun searching their im¬ aginations in order to make the 1969 Prom the best one ever. After a full year here at C.S.H.S., the Freshmen are starting to know, and to feel a part of, their surround¬ ings. They are beginning to realize that clean saddle shoes are out, and that grade school tights just won’t take the place of opaque hose. Yes, 1968 has been a year filled with adventures, discoveries, expectations, disappointments, joys, and heart¬ breaks, and there will be many more to follow. In the classroom such skills as typing, filing, machine operations, and handling all facets of business com¬ munications were stressed. The students were then given adequate opportunity to utilize these skills, and, at the same time, secure valuable experience in actual official positions provided by cooperating employers. Row lr V. Twentieth Century Romans is an organization , . - o in which the Latin students learn more concerning: • .... o ancient Roman civilization. They do this by par¬ ticipating in Latin plays, by singing songs trans¬ lated into Latin, putting on Roman fashion shows, and witnessing various demonstrations explaining classical traditions. During the year the club had an initiation of Latin I students, which consisted of slave auction and individual initiations of the slaves by their mas¬ ters. Also, the club used the money collected from dues to rent a movie, which had a classical theme, and showed it to the members in the spring. The climax of the year was the final banquet in May at which the Latin I students had to serve their masters and all those present dressed and ate in the ancient Roman fashion. Members are chosen for four main qualities: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Students must have a cumu¬ lative three point average or above to be considered. The traditional tapping ceremony was held at the N. H. S. assembly. There were twenty-two juniors and eleven seniors chosen as new members. They were named one by one and escorted to the stage by a senior member tapped last year. T he N. H. S. Program and Tea was presented in the high school cafeteria. Slides illustrating the ideals of the National Honor Society were shown. These were followed by the presentation of member¬ ship cards, the National Honor Society Pledge, and a vocal solo. Cookies and punch were later enjoyed by all. The National Honor Society, started by the class ol 1941, has become one of the main influences of high school students. Row 1: J. Frahm. M.
