FOOTBALL fn-Hg 'Ur il Q COACH JACK KEHMEIER COACH BILL CHARLESWORTH CUB FOOTBALL As Cedaredge opened their football season this year the Cubs were definitely looking forward to a better season than usual W1th a 26 man squad despite the temporary loss of 190 pound tackle Charles Hawkins due to an appendectomy the team was very optimistic Opening against the Class A Olathe Pirates the Cubs soon fell behind and were on the short end ofa 12 0 score at halftime Bouncing back in the third quarter to score a touchdown ending a 55 yard drive they made the score 12 7 However the Pirates scored again in the third quarter to make the final score 19 7 Still looking for the first victory the Cubs came up against the Grand Junc tion Junior varsity The Little Bears opened the game with three touchdowns in the first quarter They were never in trouble and they went on to win the game easily 33 20 With a win under their belts the Cubs next came up against the Delta Junior vars1ty Though the Delta team was strengthened with several varsity members Cedaredge had no trouble defeating them 40 0 Coaches Charlesworth and Kehme1er used this opportunity to give the reserves needed experience W1th spirits aroused by Homecoming the Cubs went out against the Plateau Valley Cowboys to play their best for the homecoming crowd The Cubs Jumped ahead as Mike Mills ran 43 yards fora touchdown The whole backfield contributed to the score and chalked up a total of 311 yards against 153 as the Cubs went on to win 30 6 After winning their first conference game the Cedaredge crew were set to make a good showing against their next conference opponent and traditional rival Hotchkiss The game started as an offensive battle First Hotchkiss scored then Cedaredge The Cubs scored from an end run by Del Miller followed by a l1ne smash by Bruce Perotti to add the extra point and make the score 7 7 Hotchkiss scored again and failed to make the extra point The Cubs scored again on an end run There was afumble on the extra point to t1e the score at 13 13 The second half turned into a defensive struggle Both teams threatened but could not score The score ended tied 13 13 Playing their first game away from home the Cubs met Palisade for their homecoming and the Class B title The Bulldogs scored first on a line smash. Not to be outdone the Cubs came back and scored on a pass from Miller to Gene MacAdams. Palisade scored again this time on a pass The Cubs again came back to score making it 13-12 at the half Palisade s favor 22
