Those of us who knew and loved Mr. G have been touched in a very special way. Most importantly, - CHS gained two new as- sistant principals, Mrs. Twil- ley and Mr. Mitchell. The new administrators worked in conjunction with the es- tablished team of Mr. Mayer and Mr. Harmeyer. Togeth- er, the administrators en- forced the values and prin- ciples of positive growth, discipline, and maturation. Other clerical jobs, such as grades and scheduling await the administration, but they continue to hold their efforts to providing the quality leadership and friendship that is the back- bone of our school. For the first time ever in Catonsville history, seniors and their dates were given the option of being served a sit- down dinner from Kevin's Katerers before the prom. Portraits were tak- en by Thorton Studios throughout the evening. The band, Pebbles and the Bam Bam Boys, kept everyone in a festive mood until the evening drew to aclose and couples danced to the theme song, ‘This is the Time”, by Billy Joel while reflecting on the memorable evening. 86 SENIORS 87 88 89 Kim VanNewkirk — Outstanding Theatre Arts © SENIOR AWARDS i The class of '89 contributed more scholarship money than any other graduating class at CHS. Five thou- sand dollars worth of scholarships were donated by the senior class; four $500 scholarships and four $250 scholarships were among the many awards granted to outstand- ing students in the class. One of the newly initiated scholarships was in memory of Jenni Beth Moore and was for the sum of $1500. Another $500 was donated in memory of Nick Grabner. In addition to the scholarships awarded, the class of 1989 forwarded the remaining funds in their class treasury to the Grabner Scholarship Fund which has been set up to recognize outstanding stu- dents who plan to continue their learning in the field of science. Music was provided for the seniors by B104. Throughout the day, there were many activities for the seniors to participate in. These activities were organized by the senior day committee. Taneytown Caterers supplied sandwiches, drinks, and snack food for everyone at the event. Senior Day allowed for the seniors to congregate and have a lot of fun on one of their last days together. 93 GRADUATION 1989 said its farewell to CHS at the iisset te . graduation ceremony held at the ae UMBC Field House. The student body of 245 marched down the aisle and across the stage to receive their diplomas. After an introduction by Jennifer Helt and the pledge by Kimberly Holland, the President's message was delivered by Aimee Smith. Mistress of Ceremonies, Kelli Adolphi, smoothly led the group through the ceremony. This year’s Valedictorian, Jennifer Disney, and Salutatorian, Patrick Crowe, each gave an inspiring speech which helped the seniors to go out into the world feeling good about their four years at Catonsville. The reggae music gave an unusual, eventful change which was enjoyed by the many who attended. 144 Activities 145 Activities The Junior Ring Dance was held on Friday, November 18, 1988. Many anticipating Juniors came for the traditional ceremony to re- ceive their rings as their parents looked on. After each student re- ceived his ring, each advisor turned the ring, beginning the ring-turning tradition that is car- ried out by each class. The dance afterwards, with WGRX’s Mark the Shark providing the music, left people dancing into the night. 146 Activities 147 IVITIES Oo On December 17,1988, the SGA held the annual winter holiday dance. With the theme Jingle Bell Rock, and many elaborate dec- orations, all were in for a festive evening. The highlight of the dance was the traditional crown- ing of the Christmas queen, Courtenay O'Connor, and her court — Kim Holland, Danielle Nazelrod, Aimee Smith, and Stacey Sprecher. This play was a smashing success as there was nearly a full house both nights. Under the direction of Duane Cippopini, leading roles were played by Ken Matson, Jill Stauffer, Andrew Gerle, Dave York, and Mark Weisner in the two month project. Barbara Ward, in charge of vocals, de- serves much credit, as well as Marti Taylor Clemmons, who put together the impressive choreog- raphy. Of course, the play could never have existed without the stage crew and orchestra. Stage manager, Jane Johnson, along with the productional direction of Kitty Bannister, created an amus- ing two dimensional set that Cap- tured the comic strip theme on which the show was based. Last but not least, Jim Whorton direct- ed the orchestra which provided the music to showcase the true talent of all the stars. Over one hundred students from CHS came together, and they were un- doubtedly wonderful. 156 ACTIVITIES x =a oh A 3 160 ACTIVITIES On May 18, 1989, the seniors ruled the school for a day, show- ing the leadership skills of the future. The students replaced faculty and staff members at CHS. The students who replaced teachers were required to make up lesson plans and teach the class. Those who assumed the roles of office administration and guidance staff were required to complete the tasks of a regular work day. The trade off allowed students to gain responsibility as well as respect for the hard work done by the teachers and staff of our school. i | i ¢ 161 ACTIVITIES 162 Clubs 163 Clubs Ihe: Nh i HU IIII TvTTULLLiLLiud DEBATE Throughout the year, CHS’ de- bate teams were ever present as one of the top three teams in every tournament. Despite the problems, there were a few bright spots. Both Tim Faircloth and Kareem Lamb excelled, and seniors Charles Weiland and Scott Roarke were named to the County All-Star team. The JV football team had a very successful 1988 season finishing with a fine 5-2 record. The two loss- es were by a slim total of 4 points. Outstanding defensive perfor- mances were turned in by Sammy Richburg, Andrew Lample, Kwami Mensah, and Juan Foreman. Four players rose to All-County, contributing to the sea- son's excitment and rewards. High spirits, cooperation, and great plays Clicked together. The girls’ unity led to a well deserved winning season. The girls’ JV hockey team created their own victories this season. The players enjoyed having the upper hand on other teams because of their advanced skill and experience. The goal during the season was to concentrate on teamwork, not indi- vidual play. This philosophy proved successful as they ended the sea- son with a 7-1 record. Varsity Front Row: L. Gillin, A. Menefee, J. Helt, K. VanNewkirk, M. Fittro. Middle Row: E. Riggins, M. McCanna, K. The story of the season was rain, which forced numerous postponements that eventually led to 5 cancellations be- cause of lack of makeup time. Coach Art Reeves complained about the weather by saying, ‘We never achieved any conti- nuity; we had to start new every other week.” After starting off quickly with a 4-1 record, the team’s unfortunate finish was partially attributed to a couple of disap- pointing performances. No one knows if the baseball team would have made the playoffs with the completion of the last 5 games, but chances are they would have, considering the competition. Basically the season was a series of disappointments, considering the true potential of the entire team. The JV suffered from similar circum- stamces as they were not able to play 6 games due to inclement weather. Coach Leslie claims most of the remaining games that could not be played were “near definite wins’’. One of the problems for the team was that they only had one returning starter. Because of their youth, the rain hurt even more, as the showers stymied any growth and development. Even under all these circumstances they still played to a respectable 7-5 record. Coach Leslie does anticipate a bright fu- ture as the young group will grow into a fine unit. Hopefully for the sake of the basebll program, there will be sunny days ahead. 204 SPORTS VARSITY my Varsity Front:S. Lample, B. Cameron, T. Faircloth, B. Bragg, S. The JV squad had a slow start also, but ended with a better than .500 season. According to coach Diana Mand, ‘‘The talent was there, but it had to be developed. Ca- tonsville can now be said in the same sentence with elite teams such as Du- laney and Milford Mill. The most encour- aging part about this outstanding team is that most of the members are only in ninth and tenth grade, meaning they will only get better. The girls’ team who went 9-0, was more than a pleasant surprise to Mr. McDaniel. He went out to recruit and came up with a slew of ninth and tenth graders. It just turned out these under- classmen not only had exceptional talent, but a dedication that Mr. McDaniel could not say enough about. These young girls, under the leadership of a few key seniors, amazingly were able to see themselves to states. The boys’ team’s success was not quite as much of a surprise as the girls’ team, but nevertheless, they performed on an outstanding level. They too were able to send a number of athletes to States. These athletes were also mostly underclassmen, assuring strong times ahead for the track and field team. 214 SPORTS Varsity Front:R. Bagwell, A. Clark, T. Stephen, J. Miller, A. Smith, K. Combs, B.
