Most of these changes were conducted under the supervision of principal Lynn Mayer. One of the biggest modifications was the new bell system starting school at 7:55 and finishing the day at 2:20. There were renovations such as the In- dustrial Arts Department, the boys’ locker room and other changes throughout the school to improve the at- mosphere. A “Hall of Fame’ showcase was designed to acknowledge famous Catonsville Alumni. — . i NA nt a so ess? sity ah College ver nd Opk S Art and Music The Music department acquired Philip Taylor as department head last Fall. In October of 1984, Catonsville played its first night game at Towson and the marching band was there to perform for the first time. Also a first this year, the Concert Choir was to sing in the National Pageant of Youth at the Presidential In- auguration. Unfortunately due to the weather, the pageant was cancelled and the choir was unable to perform. The Art department underwent changes this year under the direction of new chairperson Diana Mand. She in- itiated an exchange program with other area schools so Catonsville students could share in what other art students are producing over the county. The students painted departmental murals in an at- tempt to make CHS artwork more visible in the building. 5, Aer te. ft ‘ aid DIANA M. MAND. B.A. Notre Dame of Md. Business This year the Business department acquired one new faculty member, Carol Sichelstiel. The department offered a certificate for general office clerks. Many new electronic typewriters were purchased for use by the Typing II and Office Procedure classes. According to Chairman Doretha DuBose, every student should take Typing I to learn keyboarding skills. These skills are needed not only for typing, but also computers. ota geet cao Lei We? The department’s main goals were to provide students with increased Opportunities to improve their writing and speaking skills. The use of sourcebook writing supplemented the established composition program and provided practice for the Maryland Func- tional Writing Test. SHIRLEY HALL wson State Teac Foreign Language The Foreign Language Department underwent some welcomed changes this year as the department expanded with the addition of both Latin and German to the curriculum. Mrs. Craver came to CHS in the afternoon to teach Latin, and Mrs. Kranzler joined the Catonsville staff in the morning to teach German. The department enjoyed increased enrollment due to the new additions without losing enrollment in the already existing Spanish and French programs. Foreign language was found outside of the classroom too as the Spanish, French, and German clubs enjoyed ac- tivities which supplemented class exer- cises throughout the year. The AFS club also enhanced extracurricular activities as students enjoyed presentations from students who traveled abroad and those from foreign exchange students who lived with us this year. “Sap Ty ae re wteentnohe tiny give pe TTTIT IL SA e Guidance The purpose of the Guidance Depart- ment was to provide students with the Opportunity to seek information about themselves, careers, and post-secondary school education. Counselors helped students with their scholastic programs, vocations, and college choices through the many resources available in the Guidance Office. ‘ wiih . aa reniate BOG Home Economics Industrial Arts The Home Economics department offered a variety of courses on both a semester and yearly basis to both male and female students. The child development lab in Education for Responsible Parenthood again provided opportunity for students to gain experience with young children. This year saw the renovation of the Industrial Arts department. The department made use of standard classrooms until January. New walls, tile floors, and more space were the results of the changes in the industrial arts building. Creative Home Arts |, II and Nutrition, Library Nurse Changes and improvements to the library included longer hours on Monday and Wednesday, a new 3M _ copy machine, and new Carpeting. Mrs. Chalcraft was involved in various programs within and outside CHS. Im- portant programs included the “Smoke Out’, Cancer Detection for Senior girls, Blood Pressure, and Feeder School Con- ferences regarding incoming students. é EE VW .. East Tennessee State — 4 ey 2 he ‘ Mathematics This year the math department, under the new leadership of Dennis Quinby, continued to provide a variety of courses to meet the interests of all students. The range of courses offered included General Math, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Computer Math, Trigonometry and Analytical Geometry, College Algebra and Calculus. The enrollment in the Computer Math Pro- gram continued to increase with an all time high of four classes. This year was also the first time the county offered second year Calculus for advanced G T students. KEN BERRY _ Ss : ? In addition to the new four hundred meter track and the locker room renovations, the programs were also changed. The health course and weight training programs were expanded, and there was an increased emphasis on fitness training, with jogging being re- quired of all students. It is hoped that with these changes, the Physical Educa- tion Department will be better able to serve the students’ needs this year and in future years. . FRED YANERO. A. B. Fairmont State Coll. Lynch, underwent few, yet important, changes this year. A new G T science course was introduced for seniors, offering these selected students a half year of advanced placement chemistry and a half year of biology. There was a greater emphasis placed on reading skills at all grade levels, and the department has gone back to standard- ized tests to improve students’ scores on the Advanced Placement and Achieve- ment tests. RICHARD SCHULTZ _ BS. Univ.of Md. Social Studies There were several new focal points in the Social Studies department this year, the first of which was the Maryland Test of Citizenship Skills which was ad- ministered to all ninth graders. A Gifted and Talented Program for Twelfth graders was also implemented this year. The CHS mock trial team participated in county, regional, and state competitions. All of this along with a renewed emphasis on values combined with education in the Social Studies classrooms led to a strong year for the Social Studies department. “ART GAMZON _ BS Lock Haven St. College Ed. ioe Collen PI, Dept. Chrm. FRANK SHARP. BA ee of the South Special Services There are many specialized programs at CHS which all work to try to meet the needs of exceptional students. This year the reading lab continued to provide courses which stressed comprehension, vocabulary development, study skills and SAT preparation based on the individual level of the student. The Special Education Department welcomed the addition of Dr. Vern Alban to the staff as the department pro- vided a diversity of programs. The Diversified Occupation Depart- ment also added a new teacher. Larry Pickett came to Catonsville to teach ninth graders enrolled in the program. Within the Diversified Occupation Department, a great deal of time is spent in contact with the families of students and business employers within the community. Western Vo-Tech Western Vocational Technical High School offers a variety of skills for employment during and following high school for students at Catonsville High School. Areas that are offered range from child care to electronics. Western Vo- Tech has rapidly growing programs and has proven to be very beneficial to many students. gE x Fs iE Oa ahs Aa “a. 4 Special Thanks The students, in recognition of the hard work, would like to thank all of those who did so much to make the days at school more enjoyable. Among these were Ms. Brinkley, in charge of cafeteria management; Mr. John Bowen, chief custodian, for cleaning and managing the school’s appearance, and the bus drivers who transported us to and from school daily. The cafeteria staff, custodial staff, and bus drivers greatly deserve special thanks. Once again sincere thanks and ap- preciation is expressed for all that was done, but often went unnoticed. 48 GE 2D SZ Ge SENIORS IS NE NE Tce eNO ean AR AN cg Seniors The Senior Class had a very memorable year at CHS. The cheese and sausage fundraiser was very successful, and enabled the class to have a fantastic Senior Day, complete with D. J. and catering by Taneytown. The Senior Class reintroduced a tradition of yesteryear in holding a Bac- calaureate service for those who chose to attend. On June 7 the students gathered together for one last time at U.M.B.C. Fieldhouse. Later, the seniors proudly accepted their diplomas, becoming Catonsville’s most recent alumni. “ATONSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL HOME OF THE COMETS PLN Ee SP GPSS re ab, Senior Class Officers: J. This challenging production was presented on the eve- nings of November 16th and 17th and was a moving experience for everyone in attendance. The cast had only five weeks to work together to achieve the proficiency in sign language demanded by the play. Under the direction of R. Robert Harkum and Paul Dougherty, and sign language coaching from Anne Lieske and Sue Tustin, CHS’ Children of a Lesser God was an enlightenment to all involved. 152 For why is all around us here As if some lesser god had made the world, But had not force to shape it as he would? “Idylls of the King” Tennyson Seasonal Sensation On Saturday, December 15, over 200 couples danced the night away in a Winter Wonderland. Entertainment was provided by Shoot the Works who played a variety of music. The decorations in- cluded detailed murals, poinsettias and, of course, a Christmas tree. A visit from Santa Claus added to the Christmas spirit. For many people the evening was only the beginning of the festive season and the upcoming vacation. Psyched for the Surf On Saturday, January 26, the sophomore class sponsored a dance with a theme of “Think Summer.” Many spirited people braved the freezing temperatures to display their Hawaiian shirts, OP shorts, Jams, and other warm weather attire. Entertainment was provided by D K sound Productions who played good music and helped everyone ‘Think Summer.” Of Socks and Shamrocks On Friday evening March 15, the SGA sponsored the annual St. Patrick’s Day Dance. This dance marked the end of a festive Spirit Week. The dance, a sock hop in the gym, was especially fitting because that day for Spirit Week was 50's Day. It was attended by AFS students from other schools as well as students from Lansdowne, who participated in the Lansdowne-Catonsville SGA exchange. The crowd danced to the music by Apricot Brandy, and was an enjoyable time for all who attended. ; } | i | Pd x OH: SESE SUITES No, No Nanette On March 28th, 29th and 30th, the CHS stage came alive with the sights and sounds of the 1925 musical, No, No, Nanette. The talented members of the diverse Cast were given stage direction by Paul Dougherty and vocal coaching by Barbara Ward. Marti Taylor-Clements was brought in to develop high calibre choreography, and Phil Taylor conducted the fine musicians who made up the orchestra. The time, effort, and dedication need- ed to produce such a show were clearly evident as superb acting, impressive sets, show-stopping dance numbers, and authentic costumes contributed to the positive reception that the musical received. i re Nh neR Aarne a, ren intone dai thei SNe Snes NON 4, Aiba tiasiia ery. Under the guidance of Dr. Gary Blankenburg, the E ipsis has dramatically increased the scope of its magazine. The staff, along with the creative writing class, had over 31 poems published in outside professional journals this year. Guest poets Susan Ballinger, Joe Fanzone, Christopher George, Gary Lindorff, and Reva Mandelbaum came to share their work with the class. The 1985 edition has been expanded to include poems by these poets in addition to many other local poets, past alumni, and the student body. Ellipsis Staff 183 Comet In addition to printing the Comet, the staff enjoyed many guest speakers this year, including journalists from Baltimore and local newspapers, and Pulitzer Prize winner, Jon Franklin. Some of the staff participated in the MSPAA fall workshop at College Park. They com- peted in the Temple Press Tournament in Philadelphia also. Although the class did not turn out as many papers as it would like, their work was top-rate quality. In the future, advisor Sally Gracie hopes her class will gain access to a word processor computer because she feels students need more opportunities to publish their works. As publishing and printing is very expensive, the processor would cut som e costs and allow Mrs. Gracie’s staff to publish a mimeopaper more frequently in addition to regular editions of the Comet. Another hope 1s that students will follow the example of previous staff members by seriously con- sidering journalism as a career. Overall, the staff did an outstanding job and shows great promise. Mr. Bury and Mr. Leslie are looking for- ward to next year's football season, and another outstanding JV season. 3 becasBha wees ‘ a =, a i Lansdov Franklin Sparrows Pt. JV . New Kicks This year Catonsville sports fans saw history being made with the beginning of the Girls’ Soccer Pro- gram at CHS. Most of the girls had never played before this year, but by the end of the season their teamwork and concept of the game had greatly improved. Led defensively by Holly Walker and Melanie Linder, and supported by the aggressive play of Kim Freeman, the Comets kicked to a 2-3 season. Most appreciated by the entire team was the strong and consistent support from the boys’ soccer program. The coaches and players assisted in spirit, lending constant encouragement to the team. The girls are looking for- ward to an even more successful season next year with the addition of a Varsity team and more games added to the schedule. apis : Nik Pi BO Pe Oe % ront Row: A. Due to the graduation of a good many of its players last June, the team was forced to rebuild itself, adding to its rookie squad six Freshman girls. Even though the Varsity team missed the Regional Playoffs, it still finished with a good 7-5 season. According to Coach Debbie Clem, “all the girls were willing to give 100%.” Miss Clem and the team are optimistic for the future years. Pam Bragg and Jill Chambers were selected for the All Star team. Pam Bragg was also selected for 2nd team All County and 3rd team All Metro. The JV team under the new coaching of Allen Arnold, had a 4-6 season. The Junior Varsity, like the Varsity team, had a rebuilding year. The future of the JV team seems promising and strong. Take it to the Hoop The Varsity basketball team, coached by Fred Yanero, just missed states this year. With a record of 15-6, they lost in the last round of regional competition to Pikesville 65-63. Coach Yanero believes players grow through practice on their awn, and due to this practice, the Comets had an excellent year. With only two returning seniors and only one starter over six feet, they lost three of their six losses by only two points. Next year, there will be five players returning as seniors and five returning as juniors. Darren Hill had 170 assists for 20 games and 15 assists in each playoff game. Darren broke the old record set by Byron Randall who had 14 assists vs. Pikesville in 1980. Vern Alban was introduced as the new coach of this year’s J.V. team. With only one player returning from last year's team, the J.V. entered a rebulding year. Eight ninth graders and four tenth graders lacked the ex- perience to turn around six losses by three points or less ever the first 10 games. The J.V. finally reversed its fortunes, winning five of its last seven games including a victory over league champion Pikesville, Pikesville’s only loss in the regular season. Doug Rogers led the young team in re- bounds with 115, offense and defense combined, and Marvin Scott shot to the top with 128 points. Overall, an exciting season. With the experienced gained this year, next year looks even more promising. Varsity Basketball: Front Row: J. Vercueil (Mgr.), M. Black, D. Hill, H. Bordon, M. Randall, D. Ander- son. Back Row: K. With Laura Farcosky’s high scor- ing and Elaine Boston’s superb re- bounding, the team made their way to regionals. Despite their loss to Towson, whi ch ended their trail to States, the team seeded 2nd in their region and 2nd in their divi- sion. Another highlight for the team was the placement of senior Laura Farcosky on the First Team All-County. Senior Elaine Boston and freshman Jill Evans were nam- ed to Honorable Mention. Coached by Steve Young, the JV squad was led to a 3rd-place finish in the county under the leadership of Sharon Hayes. The 10 and 3 record was also attributed to the high scoring of Cathy Budd and Kelly Williams, and the re- bounding of Michelle Murphy and Dee Bell. Another senior, Tony Smith, turned in a season with a record of 8 wins, 4 losses. Tony led the team with four pins, the fastest of which was 18 _ seconds. The team is looking to a stronger season with nearly all starting players returning. The J.V. team, coached by John Leslie, finished its season with a suc- cessful record of 10-1. Also this year, goalie Kenny Gucwa, midfielders Frank Turney and Steve Smit and attackman Jack Stansbury were chosen to play in the Baltimore County East West All-Star game at C.C.C. With the loss of many seniors, the team looks forward to a rebuilding and successful season next year. The JV team under head coaching of George Gernand, compiled a 3-5 record. The team did relatively well in its first Division I season with Juniors Bernie Wrisk, Jason Barker, and Bryan Wintersteen leading an inexperienced team.
