With the loss of Ray- mond Jacobs to retirement and Isaac Aycock to Dundalk Senior, Catonsville welcomed back Michael Shannon and acquired Ralph Wood from Franklin Senior High. The Industrial Arts program got off to an unsettled start with Amien Joseph's breaking his foot and missing four weeks of the first semester. Im mediately after that, John Grunewald broke his toe. Within weeks after his first accident, he then went into the hospital for an opera- tion and missed the next five weeks of school. Even with all of the accidents to the teachers, the two departments had a suc- cessful year by teaming up together to provide a half year curriculum of both to the ninth graders. The students received instruction in an oc- cupational preparation course, along with any other courses needed to graduate, in the morning. Then, in the afternoon, they went to work at various jobs suited for each student. The Reading Lab aided students in developing speed reading and vocabulary. They also helped to prepare students for the PSAT and SAT tests. The purpose of the Special Education Department was to provide an education for students with special needs. The library was open before homeroom and more students were allowed in during study halls, making the library more accessible to everyone. Once again this year, the nurse took care of many programs during the school year. In addition to the “Smoke Out” program, Mrs. Chalcraft had to take charge of the screening and testing of all ninth graders. Throughout the year, she continued to provide excellent health care for all students. The custodial staff did an exceptional job of keeping the school clean and in order. This year, they were again under the leadership of chief custodian Floyd Thompson. Page, G. Ashby, M. Good, D. Helm, J. Rohrbeck year. Selling cheese and sausage, the class earned a surprising amount of over $5000. With low prom tickets and plenty of food for Senior Day, the members of the class were benefited by their hard work. Money was also earned by selling class T-shirts, stickers and having numerous bake sales. The class council would like to extend its appreciation to all those who helped to make 1982 a memorable year. ¢ es Sg SEE we , Top Sales People Officers: K. McNicholas (Treas.), C. A ship at my side spreads his white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. He is an object of beauty and strength and I stand and watch until at last he hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come down to mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says, “There he goes!” Gone where? Gone from my sight .. . that is all. He is just as large in mast and hull and spar as he was when he left my side, and just as able to bear his load of living freight to the place of destination. His diminished size is in me, not in him. And just at that mo- ment when someone at my side says, “There he goes!”, there are other eyes watching him coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, “There he comes!” submitted by Mrs. Ronald Lee Taylor, Sr. UNDERCLASS JUNIORS The Junior Class; although off to a Officers: K. A Salute to St. Pat On the evening of March 19th, the SGA sponsored a St. Patrick’s Day dance featuring the band, ‘Last Chance.” The dance was well attended and turned out to be an “interesting” night. Our Town This year the drama department, head- ed by Robert Harkum, presented Ouzr Town by Thornton Wilder. The cast and crew worked for over a month for the December 4 and 5 shows. Harkum built an addition to the stage, extending into the first four rows of the house. This, in conjunction with the lighting effects, gave the character of Stage Manager the appearance of being able to walk through time. All who attended were greeted by an excellent and successful show. MAME! On the evenings of May 14th and 15th, CHS presented Jerry Herman’s musical, Mame. The play was under the direction of Bob Harkum, Barbara Ward, Ray Har- dy, and April Koeppel. A talented cast, crew, and orchestra worked hard to make Mame a success. Follies TV Fun On the evening of April 16, the faculty put on a follies for the student body, proving to the students that there is another side to them than teaching. Some teachers revealed some talent in singing, acting, or play- ing an instrument, and there were those who showed questionable talent! Most of the skits pertained to the life of a student. Two thirds of the faculty were involved with the show; forty performed in the skits, while thirteen others chaperoned. Although they had only two rehearsals, the show turned out to be an entertaining and financial success. AAAI mail : 4 : | ; ‘ $ National Honor Society Induction On May 13, 1982, the NHS, sponsored by Mrs. Mekalian, inducted 24 new members, including 7 sophomores, 8 juniors, and 9 seniors. The seniors must have maintained an average of 3.0 from ninth grade to graduation, while sophomores and juniors must maintain a 3.5 average for 2 consecutive terms. Mr. deFries was the guest speaker for the traditional candle lighting ceremony. Pictures of juniors and posters were used to decorate for the theme of “Let the Good Times Roll.” The band, One of a Kind, played various selections of contemporary dance music including “Let the Good Times Roll.” Despite the rainy evening, it was a pretty time for all. Kiddies on Campus On June 2, the traditional Senior Kid- dy Day was held. The day started off with the parade through the back parking lot, followed by the movie, Animal House, and team games were held on the track. Many of the speakers reflected upon the previous twelve years of their educational, social, and athletic aspects in the theme of “Lessons Learned.” Mr. Shannon was the guest speaker who placed a strong em- phasis on the fact that, despite his usual role as a tough disciplinarian, he and the class of ’82 were “all together tonight.” Senior class advisors, Mrs. Deas and Mr. Rudd, were dedicated in making this class one of the most successful in the history of CHS. f z i Z i e ™ Interce, NY Z 2 foun = Z, O ad OC CLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCL A significant increase in the number of clubs this year allowed more oppor- tunities for students to expand their in- terests while continuing to exhibit great support for CHS. Led by senior All-Metro selections Patty and Kathy Wharton ans sophomore setter, Suzanne Meyer, an All-Metro second team pick, the Comets only lost one match the whole season, ending with a 15-1 match record and a 33-3 game record. Coach Debbie Clem, the six year mentor, faced with the seemingly impossible task of molding her team into a contender for the state title, once again did an outstanding job with her team, not only making them a contender, but making them a winner. With the abundance of talent, the JV team had a winning season, losing only two of their eleven matches. The team was once again only one loss from competing in the County Championship. Style and Skill on the Run This year’s Varsity Field Hockey team was the first team ever to win the Region I Championships. The team broke many records including total number of goals (40) compared to the highest in 1965 (22). Kim Bartosz broke the individual scoring record, 13 goals, while Linda Hine tallied 12. In addition, the team won more games than ever, ending the season with 9 wins and 5 losses. Special “laurels” also went to Laura Brown for being named to the Sun’s All- Metro First Team. With few seniors leaving, mext year’s performance should remain consistent. The Junior Varsity team had another excellent season. There was only one experienced player, making their 5-2 record year, and missing the playoffs by only one game, even more impressive. VARSITY COMETS Owings Mills Chesapeake . Milford Mill . The Comets, consisting mainly of underclassmen, with a record of 14-5, managed to beat Loch Raven and Hereford on their opponent’s court, a feat which has not been accomplished in many years at Catonsville. The lone nemesis to whom the Comets lost three times, including regionals, was Towson, a first year County ABC competitor.
