Current affairs intensifies interest. El departmento de las lenguas extranjeras trabajfi mucho este afio pour donner une atmosphere stimulante pour les estudiants. More emphasis was placed on cur¬ rent affairs and less on literature. Students were not only taught to be proficient in speaking the lan¬ guages, but they were exposed to the cultures found in the French and Spanish speaking countries. This gave them more of an insight into the lives of the people, and it presented a more enjoyable time in the classes. The language lab was used to help improve the stu¬ dents’ speech and grammar. Dur¬ ing the study periods, students could go to the language lab for further practice and study. The year was climaxed by Spanish and French field trips, further enhanc¬ ing students’ identification with foreign cultures. Frank M. Lewis (B.A., McMurry College; M.A., Univ. of New Mexico; Spanish 1,11,11; dept, chairman; Spanish Club Advisor). Mark E. Rosenfeld (B.A., M.Ed., Towson State College; Spanish I,II 10-12; K-Card Advisor; School Publicity; Public Relations).

Social studies widens horizons. hoidnd E. English, Jr. (A.B., M.A., Johns Hopkins; Images of Man; Dynamics of Individual Behavior). Harry Graybill (B.S., Manchester College; M.Ed., Western Md. College; M.S., Ill. Institute of Technology; Exploring for Man’s Buried Past 11,12; Issues in Social Justice: Crime 11,12; Elections Committee Advisor). The Social Studies department continued to grow in scope, size, and popularity this year. As chair¬ man of the department, Mr. Gray- bill, along with the other Social Studies teachers worked diligently to provide students with the sub¬ jects they desired. The results of their efforts proved fruitful when two entirely new electives were added to the curriculum this year. One of the new electives was en¬ titled “Africa,” taught by Mr. Sharp. The other elective, “Poli¬ tics and Political Science,” was tackled by Mrs. Henderson. These two electives, along with the various others, drew many stu¬ dents, and classes were filled to their capacity. The sophomores studied world cultures and religions, while juniors partook in an indepth study of American History. Since Social Studies was not required for seniors, they had the oppor¬ tunity to participate in the numer¬ ous semester courses offered by the department. Richard S.
