V .A an .w,r.hA AL past and present IN wlil'l'IN1L ,mol T the school year. 1951-1933, we seniors have a dittit-ull job. Nlost of us tend to look in two directions. Un one hand we are part of something obviously newka Catonsville Senior High School in a new location with new customs and traditions. ln this yearbook. therefore. we have chosen to re- view. in pictures and in text. the first school year in the new building. We invite the reader to enter as we did in September and to enjoy with us assemblies and classes. games and dances and ordinary everyday activities. On the other hand, commencement puts us into the stream of Catonsvi11e's past. We are already part of an old traditionf one that goes back five decades. A moment of retrospection brings into focus the evolution of the school we are about to leave. If we look back carefully we can discern that small, brick school house on Winters Lane as it opened its doors in 1903. The next year we see five pupils receiving the first diplomas ever awarded to students of Catonsville High School. .-Xs early as 1910, the need to accommodate the ever-increasing student pop- ulation presented itself. This need was met by constructing a new and larger building on Frederick lload. This was truly a magnificant edifice, complete with a domestic science room and a manual arts shop. Some of us attended elementary school there in the not-so-distant past. Again, as Catonsville grew, the school grew. Now we see Bloomsbury Avenue graced by an even larger and more modern school. Wings added to this building in 1930 seemed to end this story of expansion. Yet this, the year fifty and two, has brought about still another change. Another school. surpassing all others. has been made ours. When we think of Catonsville Senior High, then, we know we cannot assume that we are either an end or a beginning. We are merely a short era, fortunate enough to be in a new building. Perhaps we shall live to see yet another. If so, all the material things associated with the school may be forgotten, as are, per- haps, the Casino, the Annex, the June Bug and the Spectrum. But . . . present always when these things are forgotten, will be a school, high in ideals and rich in tradition that will live forever. -Tue EDITORS Three steps in PROGRESS i U il1tf'r'.s IJIIIP. 1903 . . . September 7. 1954. a new world opened for the 1200 students of the Catonsville Senior High School. First, we entered the auditorium for the opening assembly. The lights dimmed as The Reverend David Rees of the Presbyterian Church gave the Invocation. After the flag salute. the orchestra and choir. which had been practicing the week before school opened. joined the audience for the Star Spangled Banneru. Throughout the program these musical groups presented various selections. Our own Mr. Johnston and Mr. Schwartz gave welcoming remarks. Then. Mrs. Alexander Rusk. Mr. C. Merritt Hewett. Mr. James 0'Toole. and Richard Belinic made appropriate speeches with Mr. Edward C. Stapleton giving the main address. As the lights brightened we were dis- missed. and everyone went to his homeroom to wait until the tours began. The whole school was inspected by every student: many' of whom returned to class more confused than ever. That first week was mass confusion. with students try- ing to remember room numbers tand where they area, teachers' names. the interesting specimens Ill each class tnot biology classr. and trymg to fill out all the forms. ily the second week. however. everyone settled down to vvork with most of us agreeing that it . 1, -e - - -.. .1D.... .Q . , -c. ....-, - ad I .. A - was good to be back. The beauty' of our new building and its spacious grounds perhaps added to our contentment and has never ceased to im- press us. Majestic trees and rare shrubs. which have since inspired many poems for English class, give the grounds that exclusive college campus look. YVhen the work is completed. this site will truly be one of the foremost beauty spots in this area. Waitirlg to greet us on the first day were our school oflicials and our teachers. most of whom are part of the tradition of Catonsville High. This group upholds our old high standards. even though we are in a new building. and guides us into becoming well informed citizens. Our principal. Mr. Taylor F. Johnston. has been at C.H.S. for eight years. He received his BA. degree from St. ,lohnis College. his NIA. degree from Columbia liniversity. and did graduate work at the liniversity of Nlaryland and the Johns Hopkins liniversity. We are proud to have a fine. conscientious principal. and hope that wc. the students. have made him proud of us. Mr. J. Karl Schwartz. our vice-principal of four years. has been a favorite of the students for some time. Being a true Catonsvillian, he grad- uated from tI.H.S.. attended State Teachers' Col- lege. and Johns Hopkins liniversity. and the Uni- Xin, ,IonNsToN. llflillflilllll versity' of Nlarylaml. Nliss lfclna Schwartz. our arlministratiye assistant. attended Western High School and Coucher College. She taught mathe- matics for most of her thirty-one years here. hut she was trainecl in German ancl Latin also. Miss Schwartz has tray eletl wrlely in lfurope. Canada. and the l'nitecl States. Although she sees most uf us at one time or another throughout the year. she misses classroom contacts. Her colleagues. Miss llayis. Miss joselyn. Miss Barnes. Miss lluyal. Nlrs. Seclwick. and Miss Rowland still haye those classroom contacts. At limt-5 the going is rough. lvut they lxeep their sense ol' lmmor antl finally we get through. With the new school came some new teachers too. among them Nlessrs. lfrlwartls. Coxe. Heckrote. Smith. Hancock. Nlcilrone. and Nlisses Wiley' and Hoxie. XX e hope that they enjoy their stay' as much as we have enjoyed ours. Since the Catonsyille Senior High School was a new huilding. a dedication ceremony was neces- sary. Potted palms set off the hand which made quite a hit later with L'When the Saints Come Marching lnu. The Class of '57 will be the first graduating class that completed its entire senior high train- ing in our new school. Although they're the last Ufirstu. the Sophomore Class has a big crop of outstanding students. athletes, and leaders. Yvith all this and two wonderful advisors. Miss Warren and Mr. Miller. to guide them, how can they miss? The sophomore officers. who have proven to be eflicient and reliable, are Joyce Wolfe, Presidentg Charles Shaab. Vice-Presidentg Susan Kirkley, Secretary, and Carol Maisel, Treasurer. School spirit rallied among the sophomores as they did themselves proud on the teams. Some of the girl athletes were Shirley Garrett. Susan Goodwin. Dorothy Hupfl. Donna Smith, ,loan lteitz. and Barbara Reiblich. A few of the male stars were Dick Pulliam. Ken Harry. Ewing Crockett. Lester Arnold. and john Rehinert. These lists could go on and on. but they give you an idea of the great participation. Student Coun- cil positions were also well stocked by these under-classinen. Lucy White and joan Thomas even managed that very successful assembly ---the IOH: Left to right, Row I: J. Thomas. E. XlacLaughlin. F. Wilson. A. Reed. J. Gfeller. B. Crook, S. Greenwood. P. Hawkins. The weird sketches have become a Catonsville tradition that every- one looks forward to with wild enthusiasm. The tension mounted among our sophomores too, for this was their first stab at the big competition. On went thinking caps and they came up with an amusing and apropos skit called HWhere's George? George, had been lost in the school since the first day. and according to the plot, his friends were looking for him. They visited the Penthouse , where richly clad people were having tea: the Cowroom',. where students dressed in cowboy and cowgirl outfits were sing- ing: and the shops. where movers told of their escapades around school. Ge-orgeu was finally found by some brownies mitch to the relief of everyone. Later. when a sophomore was asked about the stunt. she said. 'tLnfortunately. our stunt didift win. but everyone had a lot of fun taking part in it. Tbat's the spirit that helps to make the sophomores a good class. 1011: Leif! tu rigfll. Ron' 1: Cf. Of these only about eighteen were destined to be the soccer champions for 1954--55. This was the fourth championship Catonsville had won in the past five years. Coach Charlie llelVlanss was very proud of his team. especially the two high scor- ers. Terry Jackson and lfrnie Howe. who drove in five goals apiece. Our goal keeper. Charging down the field at the Parkville game our boys racked up eight goals-the highest score ever reached against an opposing team. Our soccer team really deserved that rally at the Athletic Assembly where they received their awards. Another exciting sport which began early in September was field hockey. The girls won four games and lost four. but they played good ball. Betty Bauman, the top scorer with six goals. spent almost as much time on the ground as on her feet. Punehyl Our star fullback, I X.
