It is with great pleasure that we can finally dedicate a yearbook to Mr. Familo. Because he has been the yearbook advisor since we've been at the high school, it wouldn't have looked right dedicating the Harvester to him. However, we recog- nize and appreciate the work that Mr. Fa- milo has clone for us over the years. We saw his involvement in the French Club, the Quebec Trip, the Harvester, carnivals and various fund raisers, all above and beyond his regular class load and we ad- mire and thank him for his efforts on our behalf. Mr. Familo, the students of Cato- Meridian High School want to dedicate the 1986 Harvester to you. Thank you for caring so much. 41 -Q Are those candy bars your secret to staying so full of energy Mr. Familo? Mr. Familo 'shows his concern for us in so many ways. Explaining how our parents can help us learn is just one of those ways, 2 ,ra 'Pm i I gg: 4,0- 4 Dedicated In Memory of Albert R. Van Heesch On August 28, 1985, we lost a much re- spected, loved and admired friend. Mr. Van Heesch was our high school principal for nine years. We remember his smile and laughter as well as his fairness and toughness in dealing with us when we created problems. When he left our school two years ago, we were disap- pointedg when he left this life last August, we were deeply saddened. Mr. Van Heesch made this world a better place in which to live and we will never forget him. Remembering the Year Our Friends Our Feelings Our Fun School is more than just books and studying. It is also making friends, building relationships and maturing as a social being. A yearbook should aid that growth by helping you remember it all. The 1986 Harvener staff hopes that this yearbook will be a help to you in the years to come. We trust that each time you look through these pages you will remember your successes, your friends, your teachers, and the good times you had at Cato- Meridian during the year of 1986. Enjoy yourself! This is Carolyn before her tongue amputation. That may be the way you do it in Finland Marjukka, but here we . . . We're excited about finally getting out, but we're scared of what the future holds. We're sad too, because as we graduate and go our separate ways, we'll be leaving our friends of the past 13 years. Many teachers have accused our class of enjoying social- izing too much, but it's only because we've become such good friends over the years. We have grown together, shared together, and laughed together for so long now that we don't know what we're going to do without each other. Come to think of it - we're really going to miss Cato- Meridian High School! 9 Amy Mercer, Pres., Sindy Pipgrass, Treas., Rose Van Norstrand, V.Pres.g missing from photo: Annette Girmus, Sec. if! 1If 7' i A 2 l x Allan Ames Rodger Baldwin Andrew Barrkowiak f I-w TTY' Matthew B2i1'fliOWlali LeRae Benedict 'E 'V -NJ Kristie Bennett Mosr Arrisric: jackie Fox, Bob Pascal QL QQ.. .KJ--. , ' 'ab' haul.. The junior Varsity Field Hockey team had a very successful season in 1985. The previous year's squad didn't score a goal in league play while this year's Blue Devils scored enough to win three and tie four. A great deal of effort and enthusiasm was put forth in practice and it showed in the games. Coach Carole Troisi said that the biggest thrill was beating Auburn which defeated Cato last season, and which had a former Catoj.V. player on its squad. Some of the standout players were Tammy Davenport at goalie, Beccajanes, Renee Phelps, and Amanda Serafini at halfback, and Lura Lunkenheimer and Tammy Hawker at fullback. Receiving Player of the Week honors were Tammy Hawker, Nichole Phelps, Anissa Benedict, and Laurie Campbell. The season's success is also proven by the fact that only two opposing schools were of comparable size to C-Mg the other opponents all represented much larger schools. This was the first year for most of the runners, many of whom had to be lured onto the team by first year coach Bill Tad- deo. Taddeo commented that . . .it was a pleasure seeing the runners improve because of hard work. The most valuable player awards went to Pat Grady and Gail Southard while Dan Pollay and Mary Rugg received the coach's award for their hard work and dedication. Warner and Krakuszeski both averaged double figures in scoring to lead the team, while Warner provided strong rebounding and Fredenburg supplied the ball han- dling. Other seniors who saw a lot of play- ing time were forward Seth Voorhees and guard Tim Hunke. Among the returning hopes are sopho- mores Scott jolly and Stan Jewell who both saw a goodly amount ofplaying time this past season. With a new marching band and a chorus which tripled in size over last year, new interest in music has been the result. Under the direction of Mrs. Barone, our marching band be- came a reality. Providing halftime entertainment and getting the crowd enthused made the band a welcome addition at our home football games this year. Other activities of the band included marching in parades and attending a band competition at the Carrier Dome. Besides playing at school concerts, our concert band provides a learning experience for the young instrumentalists. Many of them compete in county wide solo competition, while others get to perform with All-County groups. The chorus provides much the same opportunities as the bands, but for vocalists. With 30 voices, a more complete sound was enjoyed this year, however, it is still hoped that more males will join chorus in the future. A change of publishers and an expansion in the size of the book helped give a needed push. Mr. Graf, the advisor, received a lot of support from some of the staff, especially from the kids who worked third period, Deanna, the other editors and Kimi Fellows' nimble typing fingers. Also, Mr. Celano, our Herffjones representative, gave us tremendous assistance. Mr. Celanos providing a September Workshop, numerous trips to Cato throughout the year and even cookies gave us the encouragement needed to produce this year's Harvester. Be cause she always had a cheery smile on her face and was blessed with a delightful personality, Marjukka quickly won the hearts of the students and staff at!Cato. Marjukka had some adjustments to make in coming to Cato gian-r.-L Foreign Exchange Students since she is from Turku, the third largest city in Finland. She quickly got used to our food, developing a fondness for peanut butter, hamburgers and chocolate chip cookies. The relaxed attitudes of Americans and their music are also things Marjukka likes about the United States. Marjukka indicated that she had problems with our three minutes between classes since in Finland they have 15 minutes between classes and they must go outside during that time. She also has problems with some Americans' attitudes about foreign countries, and their idea that America is the best when they have never traveled to other countries. Marjukka feels that people need to travel when given the opportunity, before they make such judgements. Finally, Marjukka says she will miss her friends, her host families, and she will always remember her year at Cato-Meridian. All the cows too. There's more cows than people! Marjukka said. as QQ, T, Our second exchange student, David Gonzalez, is from El Salvador, Although Dave was only at Cato until February, we will always remember his huge smile. 96 Powder-Puff Football ....
