Cato, New York Dear Friends, Considering the times in which we live, the choice of sports and sportsmanship as the theme for this yearbook is a very apt one, More than most people realize, our code of sportsmanship reflects our Western culture in contrast to the culture of the peoples against whom we are currently competing for world leadership, Those of you who have studied history know that the roots of our sportsmanship code lie in the early feudal days of our Western civilizationl Born out of the necessity of living in a lawless age, it has survived and developed over the years until today we are guided in our every day relations with each other by a whole body of unwritten rules which influences our behavior more than we really know, Typical of these are the American sportsman's feeling that he should adhere strictly to the rules of the game, even though the officials are not around. 'Playing the game we call it, Ac- cepting penalties for breaking the rules without beefing is another, Not 'rubbing in a victory, and following through on promises are others. These rules are notwrit- ten in books, They are passed along from one generation to another, and the man who does not live up to them soon loses the respect of his fellowmen. He can be- come an outcast, a man who is known as not living up to the code of decent behavior, We have all been proud of the great record of our athletic teams. - We have a reputation for turning out hard hitting, winning teams. But I think we should be equally proud of the fact that our school, for four out of the last five years, has won the sportsman award of our league, In a day when our Western culture is being so cruelly tested, the consistent winning of this award means that Cato- Meridian Central School shines as a very bright star in the 'American Way.
