'Playing the game we call it, Ac- cepting penalties for breaking the rules without beefing is another, Not 'rubbing in a victory, and following through on promises are others. These rules are notwrit- ten in books, They are passed along from one generation to another, and the man who does not live up to them soon loses the respect of his fellowmen. He can be- come an outcast, a man who is known as not living up to the code of decent behavior, We have all been proud of the great record of our athletic teams. - We have a reputation for turning out hard hitting, winning teams. But I think we should be equally proud of the fact that our school, for four out of the last five years, has won the sportsman award of our league, In a day when our Western culture is being so cruelly tested, the consistent winning of this award means that Cato- Meridian Central School shines as a very bright star in the 'American Way. Very Sincerely yours, s ' af sawed wa, 2 s, Sm gacvwiaf MR, JOHN WHITMAN MR, CHARLES STREETER ' Clerk MR, IVAN PITTROFF President MR, GERALD HOTALING MR, SANFORD SPROUL Vice President MR, PALMER TITUS finserty Uogeze Staff MR, CHARLES STREETER MRS, GEORGE MORGAN MRS, MALCOLM WESTON MRS, GLEN SNYDER Qinsertj E. Q i M 145 ff-if , One great day back in nineteen fifty-two, came a new class of Freshmen, bright and true, On making money they were bent, their first move was 'Decker for President ! Candy and towels they sold that year, the 'Starlight Swing was a hit, I hear, As sophomores, they were a sensation, their film dance was a 'new revelation , Cedric Kyle was at the mast, Their Mid-May Swing really caused a blast. In '54 the Junior Class was really on the beam, Ed Decker was again, the able Captain of their team, The Gobble, Gobble Hobble' really brought a crowd, the Rotary Banquet was one of which they were justly proud, The Senior Ball was held in June, Sammy. Blumkin played the tune, Thus was laid a foundation sound, for when their Senior year came 'round, Underclassmen, step aside! They're Seniors now, you see, They started out their final year not very V quietlyg The Rock Around the Clock proved to be a hit, and the profits didn't hurt the bulging treasury a bit, As the Christmas season came around, the Ball was really great, the Christmas cards and fruit cakes sold at a swift and ready rate, The magazine campaign was swell, the toy sale was a smashg the circus was magnificent, they all brought in the cash, As graduation draws ever near, their memories grow brighter, they've done their best, and beat f, the rest, their hearts and souls are lighter, In all the plans they undertook, success has been their goal, they've kept their eyes upon the doughnut, and not upon the hole, see.-.:, xnxx By: Karen Johnson, S, Johnson, E, Decker, F, Oswald, P, A S Ha es. Under the leadership of Lowell Colvin, presi- dent, Dale Parry, vice-president, Sofie Smelski, treasurer, and Linda Southard, secretary, the eager young frosh spon- sored their first dance, the 'April Reign, They also spon- sored their first fiasco when they attempted to sell plastic bags and towels, Somewhat subdued but undaunted, they surged back in 1954 for their second year in the majors, With Gary Groot, Roy Campbell, Sofie Smelski, and Joyce Bishop as their guiding lights, they put on their second dance, Patrick's Preamble, Their star rapidly rising now, they entered their junior year, At present, they are under the guidance of Lee Pritchard, Dale Parry, Sofie Smelski, and Nancy Richardson, and they put on a smash attraction, the Hoppin' Hawkins Hop, The Senior C1388 wishes them continued success as they fill our shoes-in the Varsity Division next year, N. Washington! Here we come! The annual Senior Play is another of C-M's fine traditions, Weeks of hard work, good times, endless memorizing, and rehearsals precede it, When opening night arrives, there is excitement, anxiety, and anticipation in the air. A few lines are forgotten, a few mistakes are made, but as the final curtain goes down, we all agree that A good time was had by all, The Christmas and Spring Concerts put on by the Music Department down through the years have become both welcome and enjoyable customs, They are the results of weeks of careful plan- ning and hard work by the band and chorus and their directors, The formal attire of the chorus and the smart uni- forms of the band add to the beauty of the music, One of the social events of the C-M Christmas season is the senior-sponsored Christ mas Ball, Beautiful music gorgeous decorations make the Ball an enchanting, love ly affair, A queen and king from among the fresh- man, soph- omore, and junior classes are chosen by the student body, Elected by popular vote this year were lovely Eva Van Norstrand and the wit of the freshman class, Alan Pritchard, Another established tradition is the Junior-Senior banquet, Held in June, the banquet gives the juniors and seniors a chance to get together for a few last laughs and a good meal served by the soph- omores. Faculty members are invited as guests of the classes, lj 'ld I f it i 5 'gest events of C-M's social season. fbi 5 6 n I ' -The high point of the Ball is the Zi' crowning of a king and queen cho- In June, we seniors are guests X at a beautiful affair put on in our y juniors, This tradition, known as . , -..the Senior Ball, is one of the big- M--QE sen from the senior class by the student body, The lovely music, pretty dresses, and the fellowship with our classmates and alumni make it a truly memorable event. See you there, folks! E Q J It nxzn honor by our worthy associates, the For those with athletic talent, the annual sports Banquet is a source of pleasure and reward, Proud parents and friends gather over a delicious meal to see their sons or daughters reap the rewards of a fine year of sports and sportsmanship. Though we don't always win every championship in the league, we fine solace in the belief that NEXT year will be different! There's a certain coonskin hat that is becoming quite an established tradition around old C-M, Of course, any C-M'r knows that we're speaking of the mangy fur piece that adorns the head of our math expert and LV, coach, Mr, John F, Schluep, fWe've yet to find our whether he wears it to keep his head warm or to conceal the top secret basketball plays that always put the C-M J,V,'s in the league playoffs every year,j Incidentally, Coach, congratulations on winning the league's J,V, championship this year. Another familiar sight at Cato-Meridian is Coach 'Charlie Downer's neckties, We're not quite convinced yet that they win Lady Luck over to our side, but we think they are a colorful asset to C-M basketball games, By the way, folks, there's a certain red necktie still smouldering in the Downer's trash can! Among the senior class is an honorable organization called the Filthy Fifteen.
