McKinley, BRH8 Fall As CHS Gets Two Wins With a determined offense and a sometimes stingy de- fense, the Golden Grizzlies played their best in sub-district play, losing a close game to Lee High, but winning over McKinley and Baton Rouge High. As pointed out by Morning Advocate sportswriter Ted Castillo, the Bears, a decided underdog against powerhouse Lee High, gave the Rebels a tense night before bowing, 20- 17. A lifeless offense ended a point drought with the pass- catch combination of quarterback Emmett Vollenweider and Buddy Hoffman accounting for two touchdowns. Tasting victory after eight straight losses, Catholic High ' s defense, led by sophomore defensive standout Gerald Barber, let a first period touchdown stand as the needed points for their first win of the season, defeating McKinley, 6-0. In the CHS 1972 Homecoming game, the Bears won their second straight contest, whipping the BRHS Bulldogs, 21-6. Again the combo of Vollenweider to Hoffman scored two touchdowns, following two set-up passes from Vollenweider to split-end James Kilshaw. The Bruin ' s final touchdown came in the final seconds of the game as giant Mark Staid recovered a deflected Bull- dog pass and raced 30 yards to paydirt. 82

Close Victories Mark Early Qeason Games Habit-forming was the word during pre-district games as the Bruin basketball team had a habit dur- ing early season games of winning by close margins. In fact, six games were one-point victories for the Bears. Most memorable of these one-point victories was the 56-55 win over defending state champ Wood- lawn High of Shreveport. Attempting to avenge past defeats of Catholic High teams by Woodlawn, the Bears forced another strong team this year and fought for the lead and its life many times during the contest. The outcome was not decided until a last second shot by Greg Brandao gave the Bears the win. RIGHT: Faking a pass one way, Greg Brandao cuts between two defenders. 84
