C9MC, Chess Club Active During March In only its second year of existence, the CHS Chess Club claimed the city championship by defeating every high school in Baton Rouge. The team compiled an amazing 84 1 2 points out of 100, with one point count- ing as a win and a half a point counting for a draw. Following the Christmas break, matches were held every other Sunday in the CHS Library, until mid-March. Led by a powerful first team of Ed Madison, Perry Staub, Jim Grosch, and Mark Mese, the club routed the Lee High team in the championship match in late May. The team, searching for statewide recognition, planned a state high school tournament but before the plans could materialize they were abandoned due to the end of the school year. The CSMC, on the other hand, though not as active in past years, held their annual Donkey Basketball Game at the CHS gym in March. Due to its inactivity and size, the club disbanded at the close of the school year. Key Club Wins First In Gold For 8th Year For its efforts, the CHS Key Club was awarded, for the eighth consecutive year, the first place award for service in the gold division of the Louisiana-Mississippi- West Tennessee District. The club was also honored at the district convention with a trophy for second best scrapbook in the district. Drew Louviere was elected to the position of Secre- tary for the La. -Miss. -Tenn. District. This was the first time that the CHS Key Club has had a member hold such a high office. Drew was the Lt. Governor of Division 8, the Baton Rouge area, last year. In continuation of its purpose, the CHS Key Club pro- vided several noticeable services including its annual Christmas Food Drive, collection of shirts for male pa- tients at East Louisiana State Hospital and Sunday escort work at the Baton Rouge General Hospital. The club also sponsored a 60 hour basketball mara- thon in conjunction with the U-High Key Club. The proceeds went to the Easter Seals Foundation.
