Archbishop of Baltimore HEN THE SISTERS of the Third Order of St. Francis came to Baltimore in 1865 to begin the present St. Joseph Hospital at the beginning of Archbishop Martin J. Spalding's administration, they found in that distinguished prelate a truly spiritual father and director. Under his successors, the renowned James Cardinal Gibbons, the noble Archbishop Curley, and the present benevolent and zealous Archbishop Keough. the Sisters of St. Francis have expanded their work in the archdiocese, rendering to it and the people of Baltimore the same unstinting and dedicated service which inspired their Second Mother General to answer the appeal of charity more than 90 years ago.
