“
Jit 949 Jmiladm Lux tua luceat— pathway to the stars! 949 'JrnkJm Two thousand years ago, a famous star led the Wise Men to the greatest of all treasures, the Saviour of the World. The Gospel narrative of their long journey is fascinating, for “to love God is the greatest romance; to seek God, the greatest adventure; to find God, the greatest achievement.” Down through the ages, the stars have reminded men of their Creator: His constancy, His brilliance. His omnipres- ence. The stars shone on Assisi and a little poor man, Francis, in love with His Maker, hurst into the famous Canticle of the Sun, a lyric song in which he calls on creation to bless the Lord of all. The same stars that shone on the Wise Men shine on Catholic High. Seniors of ’49 regard them as a constant reminder of their motto, “Let your light shine.” As they travel the highway of life, may they have, like the Wise Men. only one aim—to find and possess Jesus. PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF THE CATHOLIC HIGH SC H OOL O F B A L T I M O R E Jo Jlafit , Stat oj (he Sea, who houqht jorih the Xiqht oj out life. Jesus Christ. As we, the Seniors of '49, embark on the voyage of life, we turn our eyes to thee, the shimmering brilliance of Heaven, and dedicate this, our yearbook, and all the years of our lives to you. May the celestial whiteness of thy stellar countenance shed rays of holy purity on our every action; may the power of those piercing rays strengthen our souls to a constant practice of faith, hope, and charity; may the grandeur of thy throne in the sky inspire us to strive for the grandest, the highest, the noblest ideals. Then, when our ship docks on the shore of eternity, 0 Mary, may Thy Divine Son proudly whisper—“Mother, take care of Cathy High—she’s another star of My Sea!” Sfhitua! For. in almost every organization, members of Section IB may be found. It is well represented in the C.S.M.C. by Margaret M. Main and Lillian Hogan; in the Sodality by Mary E. Magrogan, Geraldine Quinn and Irene Bolewicki; in the Legion of Decency by Joan Mullaney. ami Loretta Evans. Activity is just as keen outside the classroom. Whether it be Glee Club. Chemistry Club, or athletics, the girls are there and ready to partici- pate. IB is proud of Class Representative Kathleen Dougherty, and A.A. Representative Irma Skinner. Section iC They’re us nice as they look—these alert, neat, genial, sophomores of 1C. Since it’s almost always true ‘the more people talk, the less they do.’ ” suffice it to say that 1C was always in the van no matter what Corporal Work of Mercy was being fostered by Catholic High. In the exercise of the Spiritual Works, their efforts were most eager, too. In both respects. 1C will claim no further laurels than those which Cod is pleased to bestow. The fact that God will likewise bestow abundant blessings on all at Catholic High, who have made the year a most pleasant one, helps to compensate for the seeming shallowness of our nonetheless sincere “Thank you” to the best faculty there is. Section 2B Rolling along in all the activities of T.C.H.S. we find Section 2B. Although the girls are combined, that is. the Academic and Modern Classical Courses, they still manage to pull through. Their coopera- tion in the laiyeltc. Library, and Catholic Review drives sent them way over the 100% mark. Its members participate in many school organ- izations and events. Catherine Reed, who is the Michelangelo of 2R. painted the prize winning poster in this year’s St. Francis Contest. In athletics. Margaret Mary Kahn and Velma Kirby are members of the basketball teams, whereas the bowling team claims Rita Bauer and Mary Coco. Section 2B has a music department all its own. with Marlene Fredericks play ing the bass fiddle in the orchestra and Mary Gwen Kucmert. Anna Krause. Anna Riecohona. Jacquelyn Russel, and Joan Jacobuuski singing in the Glee Club. Section 2(J The girls of Section 2C combine study, fun. and sport and get a mixture worthwhile. They cooper- ate whole-heartedly with the various drives, and while they don’t always capture first place, they are not far behind. Brown-eyed Catherine Ward keeps them in step as Class Representative: Dolores Grossman and Kitty Lenz take care of the Sodalists. while Jewell Tucker and Marilyn Kser take up the cause for the Missions. Joan Norton and Thelma Broil represent 2C in the legion of Decency, and Peggy Heinle keeps them informed of A.A. doings. May their enthusiasm and school spirit not dim. but carry them happily through their remaining years at T.C.H.S., and in their social and business lives, both in and out of Catholic High, may they always “Let their light shine.' Section 3 3 Here is your opportunity to meet u group of cheerful, cooperative girls who try their very best to make T.C.H.S. proud of them. The main topic discussed in Room 25 throughout the year was the ‘Junior Prom which finally arrived after three anxious years of waiting. In the layette Drive. Bishops' Relief Campaign and others. 3B was always ready to do its part. This class of 47 is proud of its exquisite bulletin hoards designed by jane Brune. a winner in the St. Francis Poster Contest. Betty Pass. Agnes Welsh. Jam Brune. and Bettie Shite are active members of the Glee (Hub. T.C.H.S. bowling team claims Betty Novak and Virginia Adair. Seen at the meetings of the Library Club ure June Herbert and Winifred Butler. Section 3( When the class of '51 gruduutes. they will In able to say that they were one of Catholic High's cooperative sections. 3C is an active and alert section. They were near tops in the Catholic Review Campaign. With a section like this. Catholic High could be proud. All the girls hope to be just as cooperative in the years to come. When these girls arc no longer together, may they still keep in mind to ulways strive ahead for the greater honor and glory of God. While they are still together, they ill continue to Ik cooperative in everything sponsored by Catholic High. Hut then, with a section like this, how could they be anything else? -r Section 4 3 Section 4C What an outstanding event was the day 4B of 49 met foi the first lime. It was destined to lie a year to remember. Always cooperative, 4B soared above their goal in the Catholic Review campaign and captured second place among the juniors. We suffered no luck of brains and ability. Cath- erine Lorden and Mary Jackson contributed superior work in typing: Carolyn Simon was a faithful honor student. Sports played an important role in our extra curricular activities. Hilda Clancy and Martha Ralston were our able contribution to Junior Varsity, and the cheerleaders proudly accepted Angela Sloniba among their ranks. Nancy Annarino and Margaret McNeill were elected to C.S.M.C., and Helen Parrish and Mary Lou Lubertinc took over Legion of Decency. Section 4R has a good deal to be thankful for; a year of memorable events to be passed on to future members. Cooperation, generosity, loyalty! That's what 4 C's made of. In the Review Campaign they attained third place in the sophomore class and also made a very good showing in the Library Campaign. This class was wise in the selection of the follow- ing representatives: C.S.M.C., Alvina Oberlc and Pat Russo; Sodality. Margaret Seebergcr and Frances Tarino; Highway, Dolores Bonicu und Anita Morningstar; A. A., Pal Ryan, and Legion of Decency. Janet Dannanfelser and Teresa Yanu .i. They can always depend on these girls to keep them well informed on what is going on concerning these activities. Room 16 is a pleasant place to visit. It is bright and cheerful, but its main object is the interesting Bulletin board. With the help of God and of His Mother, they will endeaver to keep their lives as bright as that Bulletin board. Section 5B While roaming through the corridors of Catholic High. the first thing that catches one's eye is the Junior Class. Here we find section 5B. a group of vivacious, energetic students. First and foremost, guiding the class is Sister M. Constantine. Our able and ambitious leader is Fat I truer ling, class representative. Crusaders of the mission include Gloria Moore and Constance Fermes. The Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality claimed 38 handmaids from 5B. led by Dolores Pilachowski and Lorraine Ncmec. Chief boosters of the Legion of Decency are Joan Schultz and Mary Catherine Smith. leading the way in the field of sports is Regina Truskowski. (’.lass reporter for the Highway is Claudette Morgunti. The Glee Club and Orchestra an? also represented in 5B. May future 5B Sections live up to the tradition set for them by the graduates of 1950. Section 5(J Scholastically and socially, 5C’s girls arc on top with its famed representative Dot rorrcstcll, as an all around model. Aide leaders in the Sodality arc Shirley Mullancy and Kay Connell. Marie Africa and Margaret Holm have directed the C.S.M.C. successfully, while Eleanor Willumsen and Agnes Guttenherger are its Legion of Decency representatives. Maureen Rynes and Elaine Nelka keep the Highway informed on the experiences of 5C. Last but not least comes its “little” Carol Evans as A.A. representative. I rider the guidance of Sr. M. Paul Helene, the girls have done their hest in contributing to the school activities. “This is 5C—future class of ’51.” These girls will long remember 5C of 51—their friends, teachers, the joys they shared, and the thrills they experienced. Section 6 3 6B did you say? 0| en the door and you will find a cheery classroom of smiling girls who show an interest in all activities. Charity is the predominant virtue practiced by our girls. This is exemplified by our contributions to all drives and campaigns. Our class is well represented in the dec Club and Orchestra. Our tallest' boast, though, is Alice Klein, varsity basketball guard. It is to our Mother of Good Counsel that we turn for help in our studies and guidance in our sociul problems. During this year we have learned the value of curves and strokes, of saving time, and of increas- ing accuracy in business; and. as a result, the business world will be enriched by forty-five more dependable secretaries in June. 1950. Section 6[ The smallest but most spirited section at Catholic High this year is the homeroom of just 38 fair, young damsels who have taken a gratifying part in all the activities around the school. The girls have whole-heartedly supported, among other things the Legion of Decency, C.S.M.C., and the Sodality, (specially during the Layette Drive. Section 6C also proudly boasts that it has pro- duced a cheerleader. Janet Kelly, and a top-notch member of our basketball Jayvcc, Barbara Reed. When we meet these lassies next year, we shall find an active group of junior misses, taking part in every school project. The entire class joins with Joan Bonnett. the class representative, to proclaim that it has been a happy and fruitful sophomore year in Room 18. 27 Section J) Whether it be a Sophomore or Freshman art class filing into Room 29, they are all greeted by this section’s charming good fortune doll. “Wundy.” His green and gold garb and cheerful outlook make him most symbolic of the girls themselves, who can claim him as their mascot, and cheerfulness as their virtue. Besides being cheerful, these girls are most cooperative and enthusiastic. Their hard-working class representative, Mary Adams, is a true example of one upholding these standards. Other ID leaders arc: Klizubeth Amann, A.A.: Jacquelyn Brady and Catherine Corbin, Legion of Decency: Patricia Conklin and Anna Brand, C.S.M.C.; Eileen Schnie der and Evelyn Benson, Sodality. Therefore, since their achievements have been so promising in this, their freshman year, who knows what heights these girls will attain in their coming years at T.C.H.S.? Section 2 7) The history of 21) has something of the Five little Peppers ami How They Crew idea—we 45 were peppery—lively, of course, and we certain!) were in a stale of growth. September 7 saw us wonder-eyed, jubilant, timorous and thrilled with the prospect of our first year at T.C.H.S. We were then even tongue-tied. October saw us delighted with our leaders: Imo- gene- glamorous, pcppery-red-curled — Fromhart, representative; Charlotte Forwood and Dorothea Khsworth. Sodality; Pat Ford and Joan Fitzgerald. C.S.M.C.; and Rose Mary l)e Cosmo and Carolyn O’Donnell. Legion of Decency. November found us Review Campaigning in such u thwacking fashion that we bounced over the top rung with a leap! It just amounts to this: 2D loves T.C.H.S., and hopes to spend three more such breath-taking, hap- py years in the best school in the world. Section 3l) The vivacious, friendly girls of 3D are in the race to win that coveted award—a diploma from the Catholic High School of Baltimore. They have begun by co-operating with teachers and taking an interest in sports, music and campaign drives. In sports, much enthusiasm was shown during the dodge hall tournament, when they became fresh- mun champions. Many play basketball, and hope to be fortunate enough to make the teams in future years. Two of our girls. Johanna Joska and Constance Jarzynski. are members of the Orchestra. Joan Chert. Doris Lamhdin and Patricia Kirby have been selected for the Glee Club. Patricia Kane and Jean Kec .merski have proven their ability in art. Section 4j) If position means anything in life, then 41) is “tops.” From their third floor front homeroom they can survey a large portion of Fast Baltimore and have resolved to stay on top, not only for their freshmen year, but all four at Catholic High. Forty-six strong, they boast of six honor students and a corps of representatives led by class rep.. Estelle Lind, who keeps them posted on all school activities and on their toes in developing school spirit. Representatives are as follows -Sodality: Vir- ginia Novotny; Elizabeth Mattheu; C.S.M.C.: Fdwina Macko, Marlene Oakley: A.A.: Marie Moser; Legion of Decency: Ruth Newheiser. Katherine Schmidt; Highway: Pat Muller: Phyllis Mannion. A Section 5 J) Section 6j) Forty-six zealous freshmen lassies were the bright-eyed starlets of Hoorn 20. Section 51). This happy section twinkled with many talented students. Charlotte Petr, the singing star of the freshman das , claimed u berth in the Glee Club and sparkled brilliantly as soloist in the Choral Demonstration. Two other members contributed their talents to the school orchestra, Hose Marie Petr and Jeannette Kuhhit. Dolores Pullara. Jeanette Hahhit. Shirley Ann Rohde, Nancy O'Donnell and Kathleen Hawa shone as outstanding students in studies. Five D’s lively spirits proved beneficial as 100' average was set for their goal and fast attained during the various campaigns sponsored through- out the school. Loyalty to God, l« country, to school. Under God we owe allegiance to our beloved Archbishop Keough, seen here as lie celebrated Holy Mass for the first time at Catholic High. Loyalty to all his words and counsels is a virtue cemented into the very foundation of Alma Mater. Left: As inspired by Archbishop Keough, tin1 Senior Class officers, Mary Glare Wilder. Edith Miller. Mary Lindung. and Jeanne Cora, illus- trate that loyalty to school, country, and God is very important for modern youth to practice. Right: Addressing the Teachers’ Institute at Catholic High. Archbishop Keough urged faith- ful. unswerving devotion to the Mother of God. Below: Oh. come let us adore Him. Oh come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord,” sang the participants in the Christmas entertainment as all knelt in adoration before the crib and the altar. The entertainers demonstrated the dote connection of the Birth of Christ with the sacri- fice of the Mass. Just as Christ was born on Christmas, we are born again each time we receive Holy Communion.
