The Senior (Hass of 1948 expresses its gratitude to Mother Mary Gene- rosa, O.S.F., foundress and direc- tress of The Catholic High School of Baltimore. Preparing for Tomorrow” the ms Preparing Sister Mary Ignacita, principal of The Catholic High School of Baltimore. Keough, likewise voices the aspirations of the students of Catholic High. The picture to the left, therefore, tells its own story of children gathered about their mother—of filial dedication to Our Lady of Grace. It is Our Lady who smiles on them each morning as they enter school; whose glance follows them as they leave. It is she whom they hope will lead them down life’s highway to her Divine Son. Lovingly, then, they dedicate the 1948 Troubadour to their mentor, their model, their mother—Our Lady of Grace. May she, the Help of Christians, aid them to form Christ- like minds, to build Christ-like characters, and to live Christ-like lives. Ecce Sa Shepher rf anti ntuler His Excellency, The Most Reverend Francis P. Keough, D.D. Archbishop of Baltimore, who was installed at the Cathedral, February 24, 1948 The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the Mother Church of all churches in the United States. Here on April 1 1, 1948, Archbishop Keough addressed Baltimore high school students urging them to support the mission crusade and to take Mary as their model and protector. 'Preparing for Tomorrow1 The Reverend Leo J. McCormick, Ph.D., superintendent of schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, opened the school year with Holy Mass. He exhorted students to develop their personality quotient while making the most of scho- lastic opportunities. Preparing for tomorrow To form wholesome Christian minds is the aim of Catholic High. All studies as well as extra-curricular activities have this end in view—to co-operate with divine grace in forming the true and perfect Christian. Lux tua luceat. It is not enough to be good, tender, and generous; one must be also wise and strong.” In accordance with this challenging quotation, these Seniors, through the Holy Father’s Encyclical on Christian Marriage, arc learning Catholic social principles. Seniors have a lecture in the auditorium each week, when they study the Holy Father's encyclical. The whole school has a religion period each day, Mass in the auditorium weekly, and a yearly retreat of three days. Is the eornvrsione on irhieh 1'hrisiian minds are built. Right: Through the capable instruction of the Reverend Stanley J. Scarff, students arc being trained to meet the present chaotic world with a Christ-like attitude and a knowledge of right and wrong. Center: Life is not so short but that there is always time for prayer.” This beautiful statue of the Christ Child, on the second floor corridor, is a source of inspiration to all. Below: Ann Clary, prefect of the Sodality, assisted by three faithful Sodalists, speaks to the students of Catholic High over Station TCHS, encouraging them to offer their good works To Jesus through Mary.” Science is a stepping stone Above: Physics is the study of matter in motion.” This is one of the first principles learned by those science-minded seniors in the picture above. Such terms as specific gravity, buoyancy, parallelograms of force, and sound frequencies become a part of their daily school conversation. Learning to handle apparatus for enlightening experiments is accom- plished in the laboratory periods. Left: The physics club, appropriately called The Senior Physicists of Catholic High, has stimulated the students’ interests in this subject. Their program includes special demonstrations, lectures, and trips to scientific institutions. At left, the officers who direct the club’s activities arc Joan Szamski, Secretary; Helen Grogan, Treasurer; Regina Dcucrling, Presi- dent, and Angela Nadrowski, Vice President. 12 Right: What makes an acid burn? Why docs water evaporate? Students who are really curious about such matters find the answers in chemistry. Seniors who have taken the advantage of the one year of chemistry offered by Catholic High pursue their interests further by becoming members of the Catholic Chem Club. Every Wednesday they can be seen trudging the stairs to the laboratory on the third floor where they make explorations into the magical world of test tubes, Bunsen burners, beakers, and balance scales. Below: Many experiments have practical results, bringing forth such products as tooth paste, soap, hand lotion and cold cream. Left: To be or not to be” is not the question of the English classes. The students realize the need of literary culture. For as the body dies because of lack of food, so does the mind die from lack of mental nourishment. Recognizing this, club meetings and public speaking form a part of the classes to which the students always look forward. History, ancient and modern, aids the student to better understand the happenings of today. It serves as a background for understanding past events and for interpreting the future. Too much stress cannot be placed on this subject, for it illustrates the quali- ties of good citizenship and Christian living. By the study of civics, students acquire respect for authority and a sense of responsibility as future citizens of a Democracy. Helen Tetkowski and Jean Nachodsky are help- ing Margaret Graucr, and the little one in the rear is Geraldine Folio. It is hoped that the lessons, skits, prayers, hymns, songs, and dances so happily learned, will help nurture the understanding we need with the many people who speak the soft and fluid Spanish that is always so pleasant to the ear. Along with Rita, Dolores Tillctc and Dolores Kaufman, who portrayed a man- hunting spinster in the Senior play, displayed fine guarding of forwards. Jacqueline Hicbcr, who has sung her way to the heart of every Cathy High lass, was president of the Glee Club. Up-and- coming journalist Patricia Lenhoflf wrote Pat’s Patter’’ for the Highway. Marita Kasai, hard- working class representative, is also a talented pianist. President of the C. S. M. C., Maria Mes- sina, has served Catholic High very well. An outstanding class that will forever remember its dear old Alma Mater, Catholic High.” Sr. Mary Zacharia with Anne Kirby and Bernadette Murphy Religion 2A, English 23 Section 4A Vrinriplrs of truth and tumor Girls of 4A were always fun-loving, jovial, and on their toes. Their chief asset was the presence of Joan Forcstcll, president of the Senior Class. Joan, the guiding star and model, held highest honors for four years at Catholic High. With Joan at the helm guiding them, 4A brought to port a vessel of stars. In the steno- graphic field, there were such outstanding gems as Rosalie Przybylowski, who early in the year got an O. G. A. typing pin for typing 52 words a minute. Not far behind was Dolores Slomba, who typed three perfect letters in fifteen minutes in the National Catholic Competent Typists contest. Last, but certainly not least, 4A made a great contribution to the dramatic and musical talent of Catholic High. There were 5 girls in the Glee Club, four of which were in the A Cappella choir, and the accompanist of the Glee Club, Bcrnadinc Dobryzkowski. The singers were Mary Lou Pilkcr- ton, Marie Ricss, Rosalie Przybylowski, Marie Docrcr and Gloria Bianconi. Mary Horton and Florence Tucholka contributed their talents to the Senior Play. Outside of school, Rosalie Przy- bylowski portrayed Gwen” in the Calvert Hall Senior Play. 24 Alert, Active, Ambitious” is symbolic of 3A. Alert—Outstanding in the year book patron drive; they showed equal enthusiasm in reach- ing their quota in the Bishop’s Relief Campaign. Active—Boasting of two varsity members who paced the team to victory and gained a coveted place in the C.Y.O. playoffs. Many of the lassies from this section attended and cheered at all the games, led on by a cheerleader from their own homeroom. Ambitious—Many extra curricular activities hold a prominent place on their rosters, such as: C.S.M.C., Sodality, Drama Guild, A.A., Legion of Decency and Spanish Club. One look at the picture will convince the reader that this class worked as one in everything they did. Always ready to answer questions, the faculty found them gracious and responsive. t IbfUtl Sr. Mary Catharine de Ricci with Bernadette Twardowski Religion 3A, English Section 3j As our lires unfold. In this section of vivacity, our spotlight rests on our actresses, Anne Newsome, Mary Lou Luez- kowski, Ruth Goebel, Pat Everett, Norma Shcaley, Audrey Jones and Carol Cawundcr, who participated in the presentation of the senior play, Quality Street.” Forceful and dramatic acting on the part of Jean Morrocco, Gloria Matthews and Agnes Rosendalc transported all of Catholic High to Calvary as they enacted a rendition of the Passion of Christ. They have embarked upon new courses, testing their skills in sciences and lan- guages, or in secretarial work; and they have been piloted by their teachers who have endeavored to guide these forty junior lassies safely along their journey, following the compass on their home- room blackboard, All for Jesus through Mary.” Their guiding stars have been the Forty Mar- tyrs whose faith and valor was the inspiration that caused them to set high goals and then attain them in all of the charitable drives conducted by T. C. H. S. Ever before them, causing them to go onward, was Mary, Star of the Sea. The Section was well represented by able offi- cers in various societies of Catholic Action, as well as in all sports. Girls of IB won places in the Junior Town Meeting of the Air, the Chemistry Club Open House and the Chemistry Essay Contest. Many personal achievements have been at- tained by class members. Ruth Baldwin won the high scoring plaque in basketball. Patricia Kelly is sports editor of the Highway. In the musical and scholastic projects of the school: Catherine Nickels and Marie Giza arc orchestra members; Jean Lawler, Ann Bunting, Margaret Bower, Rose Marie Latinville, and Fran- ces Buckley are members of the Glee Club. An- nette O’Connor, Patricia Kelly, and Mary Peters arc Honor Students, who participated in the Junior Town Meeting of the Air.” Annette O’Connor’s and Mary Peters’ poems, and Joan Geclhaar’s poster won prizes in the Saint Francis Contest sponsored by the Alumnae. 28 Reminiscing—The year 1947-48 will some day fade into oblivion, but memories of it will long linger in the hearts of the girls of 3B. Talent was plentiful in their class with Victoria Cieri an expert typist; Beatrice Urban, Mary Allen, and Cecelia Gaskin musicians. Margaret Fritz helped cheer our team to the playoffs with Notre Dame; while Mildred Vojik won first place in the Alumnae Contest with her essay on St. Francis. Rose Marie Haberhorne and Margaret Schwartz profited spiritually by participating in the school’s annual retreat to Glen Riddle. On the Junior Prom committee were Joan Ccnturclli and Mildred Vojik. Laughs, with not too many sorrows, filled their days. All were earnest in their studies, striving to complete their first year in secretarial subjects. Having added another chapter to their book of knowledge, the girls glance over their Junior Year, recalling many pleasant memories of teachers and classmates. This class fulfilled its duties and determinations in keeping high standards in all studies and ac- tivities. Proudly did they claim Mary Clare Wilder as their class representative. They were well represented in all extra-curricu- lar activities and all members showed commend- able school spirit in attending athletic events. In the realm of scholastic achievement, many were awarded certificates and awards in short- hand. Among the competent typists of 4B is Mary Lou Hartlove with a speed of 49 words per minute. Over three-fourths of the class were active par- ticipants in the Sodality, of which Jeanette Karl was secretary. To their teachers, they humbly give their sin- cere thanks for their untiring efforts during the past year and hope they were not in vain. These ’49’crs were almost unanimous in their sub- scriptions to The Highway” and Troubadour.” In athletics, its dodge team went to the finals before bowing to another junior class, and its basketball team did equally as well. Its members arc seen participating in many school organizations and events. Another member of 6B surprised the class by capturing the Competent Typist Pin.” We also boast a member of the Junior Varsity Basketball team, and several Var- sity bowlers. Our class is proud of its efficient representatives of the various organizations at T. C. H. S. Section 6B has never done anything really great, such as winning a trophy or getting the credit for being the best section in the school, but it can be truly called a cooperative and am- bitious class. She’s an eager beaver when there’s work to be done, a good sport in the basketball game, and a promoter of all affairs at her beloved T. C. H. S. She thrives on a good hearty laugh, and you’ll find the smile of Saint Francis on her face always. 32 Given: A group of Catholic, cheerful, enthusias- tic, cooperative and generous girls. In athletics, Dolores Tylor is a substitute on the Jay-Vec basketball team; Joyce Barry and Rita Bauer arc members of the Varsity Bowling team. 1C has a music depart- ment all its own: Gloria Oleski is trumpeter in the Orchestra; and Susan Dentz, Evelyn Voosen and Alice Singleton sing in the Glee Club. Mary Doll and Catherine Larden supplied superior Biology work and easily captured honors. Hair-pulling and deep-rooted sighs greeted their first look at circles, triangles and all sorts of queer things. The Honor Roll claimed Nancy Clayland, Mary Doll and Patricia Rowan, while Jayvee basketball favored Hilda Clancy. Among our J. V. basketball players are Irma Skinner and Doris Hughes, while the Bowling team claims Angela Kurzmiller. Nearly all the girls are active members of the Sodality, C. S. M. The class has also participated in several Sodality skits and, even produced an original one written by a mem- ber of the class. It also went over the 100% mark in the Bishop’s Relief Campaign. She is proud to admit, too, that the Secretary of the A.A., Secretary of the Biology Club, Treasurer of the Sodality, and several Junior Varsity mem- bers, represent the section in extra curriculum activities. What 4C lacks in size she makes up in actions. 30 What is your favorite section? A girl of Room 18 would reply SC. Its main attraction besides the fact that the door often refuses to open, is the beautiful bulletin boards which portray vivid imagination in fine color schemes and exquisite technique. The clever artist, who also won first prize in the St. Francis Poster Contest, is Jane Brunc, a student at Maryland Institute of Art. Talented musicians who held a prominent place in the midst of SC arc Mary Pistorio, the winner of numerous contests, with her lovely soprano voice, and Norma Massey, who is a violinist in the school’s orchestra. When acting ability is in discussion SC is an outstanding figure, considering the fact that sev- eral of her daughters held main parts in the Life of Stephen Foster,” in the Annual Choral Dem- onstration. Thirty-one have pledged themselves to monthly Night Adoration, and ten have chosen to adore weekly. Their wholehearted cooperation in the Bishop’s Relief Campaign brought their total to sixty dollars. On the whole the class en- joys their school work, Latin being the favorite subject of many. Seemingly, the majority prefer the Academic Commercial course, for five from the class aspire to the Latin-Scicnce, and only one to the Modern Classical course. They arc also blessed with many young artists who have shown their ability through dis- plays on the bulletin board and in their regular art classes. Never let it be said then that ID is not The” Section of the school; for her members, determined to fight, win or lose, are marching forward, striving for that coveted title, Good Sports and Good Scholars.” •10 When the class of '51 graduates, forty-five of them will say that as freshmen they were known as Section 2D. Last fall these famous freshies led all the first- year classes in the Catholic Review Subscription Campaign and stood out well in all the other school activities or campaigns. They learned early from Sister M. Jeanette Clare that development of school spirit is a very important part of their education and that is why they chose early as their motto: Loyalty, Generosity, Willingness, and Thankfulness. Kay Connell has done even more than was ex- pected of her as class representative. Other 2D leaders arc: Dorothy Forcstcll and Eleanor De Carlo, Legion of Decency; Jean Funk and Janet Dancnfclser, C. S. M. C., Mary Catherine Debelius and Nina Einolf, Sodality; Carol Evans and Lea- trice Gabardine, A.A. Now that their first happy year is over, the girls of 2D will go on to the sophomore, junior, and senior year and then, after graduation, to suc- cessful Catholic adult life, always remembering those strong principles of uprightness, kindness, charity, truth, and loyalty that were the first lessons learned in their first class at Catholic High. Although 3D is gifted with school spirit, they arc also talented with that old favorite at T. C. H. S.—basketball. They expect to sec members of their class team on the varsities in future years. 3D is very proud of Janet Kelly who came out third in Major Bowes Contest.” She has been tap-dancing for years, and later would like to become a dancing instructor. Artistically—Elaine Nclka, Catherine Michel, Mary Loefler and Lorraine Mueller have pro- duced some of the finest art sketches. Quite a few talented pianists have likewise been discovered. Soprano Patricia Mitchell, and alto Yones Maffei have quietly edged them- selves into the Glee Club. Pat Murphy’s dress, just completed in the sewing class, definitely has the new look. Sc wlastically—4D is proud of its single honor student, Mary Linsenmeyer. It boasts of Joan Norton and her $15 prize as a Quiz-Tcen-Timc Scholar. Athletically—Rita Lentowski, the only freshman to make the Jay Vec Basketball team, and an excellent diving champion heads the sports de- votees. She is matched in the latter field by Dorothy Michel, an outdoor swimmer of the Lakewood team. In campaigns, drives, and other school activities they have shown a spirited interest and good will in their own little way. Among outstanding students are Germaine Palasik, Alvina Obcrle, Barbara Reed, Maureen Ryncs, Kathleen Sand- kuhlcr, and Miriam Pope. While most of the members of SD dream of faraway lands, Alvina Obcrle fans their imagination with fascinating accounts of her cross-country trip to California last summer. Their two budding artists, Pauline Picarella, a student at Maryland Institute and Constance Rybarczyk supply their room with attractive bul- letin boards. Section 5D also claims the only freshman soloist in the Choral Demonstration, their petite, black-eyed songbird, Margaret Rohe. Although there are many other details too numer- ous to be spotlighted here, one can sec that 5D has much to offer for the glory of Catholic High. Section 5D Krlto forth your virtues And your trorih proclaim. Section 6D Last, but not the least, of all the freshmen sections, 6D can lead in some things. They led all the other freshmen in the Bishop’s Relief Fund drive. They have cooperated in all the spiritual organizations in collecting soap, magazines and other articles; special drives against B” pictures; lively attendance at all meetings. In sports they find that their sportsmanship was chiefly displayed by being good losers. 6D’ers are not forgetting scholastic efforts. There were always many on the Honor Roll. In history they prepared a debate on universal mili- tary training and kept the whole class in sus- pense until the vote showed a preference for U.M.T. The climax of the year was reached in dra- matics. In pantomime, in courtroom scenes, in verbatim quotations, they have shown exceptional ability. Most enjoyed were the trial of Rip Van Winkle, proving he was sane, and the modern version of talcs from mythology, especially Baucis and Philemon.” Sr. Mary Adele Francis with O. Whether at work or play, Cath- olic High students are constantly reminded that their lives must glow with the love of God—their lives must shine as a beacon in the confused world about them. They must combat Communism and other perils by their love of God and country. Christian living is the end and aim of their Catholic education. Add a dash of spirt to recipe for Christian life Speed, skill and a willingness to work were the keynotes of the Varsity Basketball team of 1947-48. Functioning smoothly under the ca- pable guidance of Coach Peggy Sherman, The Big Green Team” piled up victory after victory. Out of ten scheduled games the Varsity cagers suffered only one defeat, at the hands of the league-winning Institute of Notre Dame. Supplementing their skill at basketball, this year’s Varsity possesses a true spirit of sportsman- ship which drew praise from every team they met. Hats off to the spunky, little Junior Varsity of 1947-48! Climaxing an undefeated season, they captured the Catholic League J. V. trophy. The high-scoring trophy won by forward Ruth Baldwin added yet another laurel to the Junior Varsity’s crown. It is interesting to note that Catholic High’s Junior Varsity teams have been undefeated for four consecutive years. Skill coupled with deter- mination helps keep these youthful players on top. Eight bundles of pep and enthusiasm, garbed in flashing gold sweaters and smart green skirts! Who doesn’t know our cheerleaders? Whether or not victory was smiling on them, this smooth- working little group, with their eye-catching mo- tions and peppy cheers, always managed to keep up the school spirit.
