FIFTH EDITION 'Jhe 7947 'JusulaJsu i FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY MOTHER MARY GENEROSA, O.S.F., foundress and directress of The Catholic High School, to whom the faculty and the class of ’47 join in extending felicitations on the occasion of her golden jubilee, also best wishes for many golden years to come. S7'OR7 S! ans„ 0m Jam Pillatis- Sijmlels ej 0m jftm flearis anJ Knowledge, Virtue, Culture and Sportsmanship were signified by those strong columns which welcomed us in the morning and seemed to say be strong” as we passed them on our homeward way. Four pillars pointing heavenward are four sturdy symbols of four treasured years of life. Four aims stood out among the many objectives which cul- minated like concurrent lines in one great effort to form of ourselves true and perfect Christians—citizens of time and eternity. Four years based on four pillars representing four aims—here is their story in the 1947 Troubadour. Troubadour of God” Troubadour of God was a favorite name applied to St. Francis of Assisi, patron of the faculty and the school, and the one to whom this 1947 yearbook is dedicated. Pointing upward, he indicates our way to heaven as we school ourselves in our four- fold aims of knowledge, virtue, moral fibre, and sportsmanship. Like the pillars about which the theme of our book is built, he holds the cross before us to remind us that we must be Christ-like Chris- tians. The life of St. Francis is a fascinating one. While still in his teens, he realized the emptiness of a life- devoted to pleasure alone. Forsaking a life of luxury, he went about instructing the people of Umbria in true knowledge, helping the sick, and encouraging the down-trodden in such a light-hearted, vivacious fashion that he was called Nature’s Troubadour. Five seniors who admire St. Francis as he stands sculptured in the auditorium lobby are Janet Mc- Clure, Margaret Trenkamp, Monica Skalinski, Shirley Griffith, and Dolores Kaiser. 4 5 I HIS EXCELLENCY MOST REVEREND MICHAEL J. CURLEY, D.D. Archbishop of Baltimore and Washington until his death May 16, 1947. News of this great Arch- bishop’s death came while The Troubadour was going to press. It brought sadness to the hearts and a prayer to the lips of Cath- olic High’s personnel, who lost a brilliant leader and a steadfast friend in his passing. May he rest in peace! 6 anJ School coof enate in jonminq Christian chanacten 7 Knowledge is power in the world of today. What a wealth of new informa- tion is opened up by the study of social studies, languages, science, literature, and the other branches that go to make up the high school curriculum. From the very early days the value of wisdom has been emphasized. Cardinal Newman’s motto was Out of the shadows, light.” Catholic High's motto is Let your light shine,” and an interested faculty is always urging After it, after it—after the gleam.” E. Cosgrove and J. Fuchs appre- ciate the value of a Catholic high school education based on the four-fold aim. 9 Food for thought is supplied by this dis- cussion in a Senior English Club. Taking part are F. Hartzell and B. Wohlfort, but the class is debating among themselves whether or not Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman deserves the literary place which it holds. In the foreground are: C. Schafer, M. Adams and J. McClure. A visit to the studio of WCBM proved stimulating to M. Trenkamp and A. At Catholic High religion has always been the cornerstone of the curriculum —the basis upon which to develop strong moral fibre in the characters of youth. The subject of Catholic education is man whole and entire, soul and body, with natural as well as supernatural faculties. Educators at Catholic High keep in mind the fact that they are co-operating with divine grace in forming nothing less than the true and perfect Christian.” Students are encouraged to keep their eyes fixed on the eternal commencement which looms beyond that bright day in June to which they all aspire. Below are senior representatives who were principals” of their re- spective classes in regard to student activities: L. Filbert, R. Guerras, P. O'Donnell, J. Izdebska, and R. Davis. 21 ffe iqms insfauction coojie iates with Catholic High heard a broadcast from the Holy Father for the first time early in 1947. It was a plea for starving European children. Girls joined whole-heartedly in collecting $900 for the Bishops' Relief Fund. In addition to a daily religion class in our homerooms, each week there is a lecture in the auditorium by the Reverend Stanley J. Scarff. His explanations of the Command- ments of God and of the Church, plus humorous anecdotes to clinch his points, add zest to the great study of Religion. Monday morning offering of the Mass is a spiritual boon bringing God’s blessing upon the student body. The Supreme Sacrifice enables Catholic High to carry on a worth- while week of study and school activity. To our school patron, St. Francis of Assisi, we owe the origin of the beautiful custom, the Christmas Crib. This devotional custom is re-enacted every year by Catholic High students, and J. Gravatt, Section 5C repre- sents the student body in this picture before the Crib. She offers on their behalf, a prayer of love and devotion to the Blessed Infant on His one thousand, nine-hundredth and forty-sixth birthday. Go forth to meet the shadowy future without fear, and with a manly heart.” Henry W. Longfellow. IIcnrj, WadsKorlh IjUngf.llow How Are You Spending Your Time? EMORSELESS time—YOUR time! It is ticking away the seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years —ceaselessly, mercilessly. Indeed, time is fleeting! To youth, time moves slowly, to old age it passes swiftly. And what is more precious than time? The only way to save it is to spend it—wisely! TIME! Yes, 1440 golden minutes each day. Time is the master—not man! Once gone, like yesterday, it will never return. But tomorrow will bring new opportunities to your door. Are you ready to take advantage of them? Time cannot stop—it will not even pause! How foolish it is to waste any of it! Truly, we modems can say—“Time is money!” Benjamin Disraeli once said—“Time is the great physician—it heals all wounds.” Also, Benjamin Franklin once exclaimed—“Doest thou love life, then do not squander time, for that is the stuff life is made of!” Q4.
