Reverend John Conroy, the first bishop to be con secrated in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, was a person of profound learning, and administrative ability. During his reign, many additions to the diocese including the beautiful St. ,Ioseph's Church in Albany, the Home for the Aged, and the Convent ofthe Sacred Heart took place. MCNIERNY, D.D. 1878-1894- Third Bishop of Albany A man of great dignity, deep spiritual and intellectual sensibility, he was, moreover, a man of action. Under his guidance, the Cathedral was remodeled and the Jefferson Street Spire was built. In 1893 Bishop Mc- Nierny became a Regent in the University ofthe State of New York. It was during Bishop McNierny's reign in oflice that the Syracuse Diocese was established and Very Rev. Patrick Ludden, pastor of Cathedral here was named the First Bishop of Syracuse. BURKE, D.D. 1894-1915 Fourth Bishop of Albany Known as the Children,s Bishopufhis disarming simplicity of manner, intense love of children, and de- light in living made his personality one of exceptional appeal. Bishop Burke was a daily visitor at Cathedral Academy and many of our grandparents tell us of this Little Shepherdl' whom they loved. 2- W4 PC HIS EXCELLENCY, THE RT. REVEREND THOMAS F. CUSACK, D.D. 1915-1918 Fifth Bishop of Albany Though his ofhce was to be the shortest in the history ofthe diocese, Bishop Cusack established the Eucharis- tic League and the Propagation of the Faith on a diocesan basis. His generosity was widely known. He made large contributions to several institutions. The influence of this venerated Bishop cannot be measured.

Scully was appointed in l945 as Co-adjutor Bishop of Albany to assist with the tremendously growing Catholic population here. Then in the autumn, Father Taaflfe was transferred to Blessed Sacrament Church in Albany. To our midst came our present rector and principal, the Reverend John ,l. Forman. lVlany were the student interests which spread beyond classroom activities in these past few years. Some ofthe new features added were: C.Y.U. projects, Our Lady's Sodality, Public Speaking Clubs, May Day Participation, Operettas, Boys and Cirls Clee Clubs, Class Night Banquets and many other events which kept our youth on a par. During these years Cathedral was represented in Hearst History Contests, National Poetry Contests, Latinum Auxilium Examinations, and several other competitive tests and we were favored with many winners in these enterprises. i-3 A 1 ti fwf tt . ip 9 ti T Q A yyiz i N On February l4, 1955-both of our schools on Jefferson and lower Elm Streets were destroyed by hre. Two hundred seventy pupils and their teachers took up their work the following Monday in the partly occupied St. Vincent,s Home. ln Septem- ber ofthis current year,when only one building was available for twelve hundred children, we were granted special permission for double sessions for all grammar school classes. The time had come when Cathedrals walls were too small to house her children-and Bishop Scully and his councillors planned a remedy for the con- dition by closing the portals of academic life at Cathedral this June. The present school will provide facilities for her seven hundred elementary pupils. The academic work will continue in the million dollar Cardinal McCloskey Memorial High School within the immediate vicinity ofthe Cardinalis great Cathedral, Every student graduates from C.A. with a store of memories. Her high educa- tional standards aim to prepare her students to be worthwhile Catholic men and women and therefore good American citizens. . .so, young or old, let's leave the yestcryears behind. . .and travel with us through the pages ofTODAY. 13

CIBBONS, D.D. 1919-1954 Sixth Bishop ofAlbany With such an inspired Shepherd and a magnanimous spiritual leaderw at the head of the Albany Diocese, there could only have been an era of great growth both spiritual and material. The expansion of the Diocese was graphically and photographically embedded in your heart and mind, Dear Bishop Gibbons, and thirty-five years and eight months as our Spiritual Leader you aimed to fulfill this desire. As a humble Bearer of Benediction to Cod's people, your name is venerated by old and young-by clergy, religious and laity alike. Now at Mater Christi Seminary, watching from behind the scenes, your heart truly consecrated to Cod and His Glory, must be filled with joy to know that every- where around Cathedral growth is apparent. From March 25, 1919 to November 10, 1954 you, Codis Chosen Apostle, kept an ever-watchful eye upon Our Alma Mater. During your apostolate many are the sons and daughters of C.A. that you have raised to God's Altar or presided at the taking of Vows of religious professions. Without your sanction, the third volume of OUR STORY, the present Cathedral Academy, would not have been accomplished. While you are enjoying a foretaste of Heaven, we the concluding group of Cathedralitesg together with our beloved Priests and Sisters, thank Your Excellency for the untold blessings you brought to C.A. It is the expressed wish of each of the 106 graduates of 1956 that Our Heavenly Father will reward you abundantly for your life of confidence in Cod and hlial devotion to His Blessed Mother. 15
