it oung or old, once in a while we all get a hankering to journey into yesterday . . .and the way to get there is with memo- ries. . .so travel with us now down the path of the years to our beginnings. Upon arriving in the newly-founded Albany Diocese on May 27, 184-7, Bishop John McCloskey saw that there was much work to be done in this vast area-now known as Albany. He found himself with a parish exceedingly small in a sparsely settled sec- tion ofthe city, which at that time contained only about forty-five thousand people. First of all, plans were made for a great Cathe- dral. The land which the Bishop chose was situated on the hill which is now familiar to us as Eagle Street. It was purchased on April 1, 184-8.The Cathedral was completed four years later, thanks to the untiring efforts of volunteer workers from every surrounding locality. ln ceremonies held on November 21, 1852, this beautiful gothic structure was dedicated to the Mother of God under one of her most glorious titles, the Immaculate Conception. Today the twin spires stand as a beacon and a monument to a great priest- a Man of God who was destined for progress. This ls Our Story When the parish was in its infancy, the next step was the open- ing of a school in September 1861. Three Sisters of Saint Joseph were in charge, Mother Francis Xavier, Sister Ephram and Sister Teresine. These nuns came from their motherhouse of Carondelet in St. Louis, Missouri. Their first convent was a small brick dwell- ing on Eagle Street. The enrollment at the first Cathedral school was two hundred boys and girls for grades one through eight. We are told that the first young girl to register, Mary Lawlor, later became Sister M. Lucina, C.S.J. ln 1863, two Christian Brothers, Brother Simplician and Brother Alfred Edward, came to teach the older boys in grades six, seven and eight. While the parish school for boys was conducted on Jefferson Street, it was called Saint Aloysius Hall. Unfortunately, these zealous men of Cod were not to remain with us as long as we would have liked. They were called to more demanding duities by their superiors who had begun to open their own schools for boys. About this time, news had reached us that Archbishop Hughes had passed to his eternal reward and in January 1864, the Holy See appointed Bishop McCloskey to the Archepiscopal throne in New York City. To keep pace with the ever-moving trends, the Rt. Reverend Patrick Ludden, second Rector, made known the dire need for a new school. ln the spring of 1873, with the vigorous support of his parishioners, construction began on a new building on Elm Street adjacent to Saint Aloysius Hall. This new building, now referred to as the Annex, housed an elite school for girls and the name selected for it was Saint Agnes Hall. In 1888, the Reverend Francis D. McGuire, pioneered the idea of separating the high school from the elementary grades. This academic department was moved to the third fioor of the Elm Street school. One sister was assigned complete charge of the ad- vanced students. The first group to graduate from high school finished in 1893. As the years rolled by, Cathedral was turning out notable young men and women. Such excellent work could not go unnoticed and,in 1898, the University of the State of New York granted a charter to us and we officially became Cathedral Aca- demy. Up to this point only the girls had remained for the studies which merited Regents diplomas. Then, in 1903, Stephen Smith, Henry Molloy and Robert Molloy began the era for boys. Two of these early graduates who are still living are pictured on opposite page-Mr. Robert Molloy and Miss Caroline Clancy.
