New Yuma The Sisters of St. joseph are privileged to be the advanced guard today in that battle which is of and for the Lord. We pray that many will come to help them in that struggle, to take the place of the heroines who fallg to aid them in seeking new points of advantage, or furnish a reserve ready for action in these coming days which threaten. Not all our young women can be Sisters. Only those who are willing to make sacrilices-only those whose souls are touched with the llame of the spirit-only those who can see high emprise in leaving all to follow Him-only those who realize that there is no solitude where God is, and that no mortal task may claim them when the work of God is to be done. H21 s When our High School days are over, and the years have come to pass, Our thoughts will always hover on our old graduating classy, FHESHNIEN YEAR The September of 1944 marked the entrance of many Green Freshmen into the portals of Cathedral Academy. We, as freshmen, were blamed for all the con- fusion in the halls, talking in study periods, and every other misdemeanor that could be committed by a high school student. That year took from us Father Taaffe, and gave to us our beloved principal, Father Forman. Public speaking became a main issue with the appearance of Mrs. Sciutto. On February 7, 1945, C.A.'s big happy family was enlarged by the arrival of Saint Josephis Academy pupils. SUPHUMUHE YEAH As wise fools we roamed the halls looking down our noses at the lowly Freshmen. This was the year that Shorthand, Geometry, and World History gave a tendency to the appearance of grey hzlir. Th-is also was the year that God took from us Sister Gertrude, whose memory we shall never forget. Our teams became injected with new enthusiasm because of feminine cheerleaders. On came June and with it, the inevitable examinations. Somehow, we came through with Hyine' colors. JUNIUB YEAH Upper classmen at last! Super Suds wasn't the only thing 'improved this year. Cathedral obtained that New Look 'by decking out the gentler sex with new blue uniforms. The debut of C.A.'s Canteen made competing canteens sit up and take notice. Every girl swooned at the sight of the new football team. They were so round, so firm, so fully packed, so quick and easy on the plays, that we certainly were proud of them. Who could forget the Christmas Semi-Formal? May brought the joyous anticipat-ion of the Junior Prom which was held on the I4-th of that month. Never before was there such a gala Junior Prom. SENIOR YEAR We are Seniors. This is the best and most memorable year of all our school years. On the reopening of school, we were greeted by our new superior, Mother Seraphine. The extra-curricular activities were broadened by the establishment of the Camera Club. Our last retreat was given by Father Adrian who captured every student with his kindness and quick wit. The Senior Ball was magnihcent and every graduate arrived with much glory and splendor. C'ass night came and the long awaited graduation exercises. The end of our high school days. We are now men and women of the world. Graduates of Cathedral Academy. MARGARET THmArim:Au ELEANOR Risrsi' l43l - 4 W R 'A ' fizuit, - 0 Xflfwl 'YU S . It I Not even during the Reign of Terror, when they were harassed by the soldiers of the Revolution, and imprisoned, was the spirit of the order broken. But under the leadership of their beloved Superior, Mother Saint .Iohn Fontbonne, daily did they keep themselves in readiness for death, not knowing when, like their Com- panions, they would be summoned to the scaffold. The fall of Robespierre, how- ever, hastened the release of Nlother Saint john and her Community. For twelve years these noble women, without advantage of a eonvent or religious habit, in- struetecl the ignorant, eared for the poor and siek, ever trusting in God to repair the ruin wrought by an irreligious government. Their trust was rewarded in eighteen hundred seven when the spiritual Father of a group of holy women in Saint Etienne requested Mother Saint john to unite the group under the rules of the disbanded Congregation of Saint joseph. They landed at New Orleans in a terrific storm on the twenty-third of February. pressing onward up the Mississippi to found at Carondelet, the first convent of the Sistcrs ol Saint .loseph in America. The village of Carondelet was a mere collec- tion ol log-cabins, inhabited by Creoles and woodmongersg yet the Sisters, for the most part gentle women of France, took these people to their hearts, and with their characts ristic love ol' sacrifice, endured the hard work, the misery, and the poverty, which ever attend the founding of a mission. Their convent was a crude log-cabin barely large enough to accommodate even their smzlll number, so small that the upper story. or sleeping quarters. had to bc reached by a ladder on the outside. The small convent, which also served as a schoolroom, was easily shaken by the cold winds rushing across the prairies, and a common sight within the cabin was an umbrella perched over the stove to protect the fire from the rain and snow which entered through the cracks in the walls, and roof. Missions were established throughout the West, the Southwest, and the eastern parts ol' our country. At Long Prairie an Indlian school was started with fifteen pupils. Here government provisions were dispensed by the Sisters to the poor H8 VI fy new .tfxs X ey among the Indians, bearing again their cross into the hovels of tht- poor and the ignorant. Into the Civil-war-torn South, the noble Sisters found their way, and es- tablished a school for colored children. The community continued to grow, and in a few years, the Mother House at Carondelet branched Out into several establishments -in Canada, Minnesota, Pennsyl- vania, Virginia, New York, California, and Hawaii. The first house of the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint joseph in the Albany Diocese was opened at Oswego in eighteen hundred fifty-eight. This diocese differed widely in both social and spiritual aspects from those in the central and northern sections of the country which the Sisters entered at an earlier period. Missionaries had shed their blood in the country of the Mohawks, and had endured torture and death that the Faith might be spread among the Indians. Inspired by the examples of those who had gone before them, the Sisters set zealously to work, teaching and doing wprks of mercy. During the Plague of eighteen hundred seventy-eight at Camp Father Matthew, established as an experimental curedfor-fever-camp, the faithful Sisters ministered untiringly to the sick and afhicted, many of them losing their own lives in the interest of humanity and science. In Cuba, during the Spanish-American War. the Sisters brought comfort, and the consolation of Religion, as army nurses, to the siek and wounded. I49l W ll 3 23? Sister l r:1neis Xavier Husey was Superior. With Sister Ephraim W'ade, she took charge in two upper rooms of the small 'Cathedral school on .Iefferson Street, of the girls, and little boys between the ages of six and ten yearsg the Christian Brothers taught the large boys, The total enrollment was twfo hundred pupils, Mary Lawlor, who afterwards entered the novitiate in Troy, and was known as Sister Lueina, was the first girl registered. In eighteen hundred sixty-six the Sisters moved into a new convent on Elm Street. In response to a demand for a girls seleet school. at that time the equivalent of the day academy, additional property was purchased on Elm Street in eighteen seventy-two, and a building erected by popular subseription. This school was opened in eighteen hundred seventy-four. Sister Florentine Daly was in charge. ln eighteen hundred ninety-two, the school was chartered by the Regents ol' the State of New York, and 'became known as the Cathedral Academy. ln nineteen hundred seven. property was acquired at the corner of Elm and Hawk Streets, for the erection of a new convent. November, nineteen hundred eight, saw the S-isters in their new convent at 122 Elm Street. l52l FQ Q. It is one of the most modern in the eastern section of the State. Every room receives southern sunlight. Over the entrance on Elm Street is a bas-relief, showing Triumphant Democracy, holding aloft the torches of Learning and Wisdom, sur- mounted by the Cross of Christ. The school motto, Pro Deo, Patria et Scientia , is an inspirational phrase lor us all. The Academy, at present, has a registration of over eleven hundred pupils, a faculty of thirty-one, twenty-seven of whom are Sisters of Saint joseph. lt has grown and flourished and is a power by which the Church of God has reached the hearts and minds of its children who belong not only to the Cathedral parish but to approximately twenty other parishes within a radius of several miles. 'l'he Sisters of Saint .Ioseph have made the halls ol' Cathedral a dear memory to all who enter them. The Sisters are proud of the men and women of today who were their pupils a few years ago. And the men and women of tomorrow, who are their pupils today, love and respect them for the inspiration they have been during hours spent in classrooms, library, or chapel. Their work will go on, and we who reverence them will keep their memory alive by loyalty to the principles they taught. It may surprise the adults, who remind us of this, that we are well aware of the fact that these are our happiest days. Each day holds something new in store for us. In other words, there is never a dull moment . To illustrate the daily procedure followed by a Senior at Cathedral, we have acquired the services of a few of our classmates fwith apologies to all Powers modelsj. With eager anticipation-??? we awake at seven each morning, and after per- forming our regular early morning routine, hurry,-and I emphasize'-hurry- to school. During the course of the morning we struggle through Chemistry, Trig, Shorthand, and that ever lovin' History C. With relieved mind and hearty appetite, we welcome the lunch hour. The school cafeteria, as well as nearby stores, buzz with the talk of the morning's events and the uncertainty of those yet to come. Afternoon classes go by rapidly, despite the many disturbances, and before we realize it the dismissal bell is sounding through the halls. For many, that means the end of school for another day, but for Seniors, there are a number of extra-curricular activities in which we participate. The Public Speaking Club, the Camera Club, and the various sports demand the co-operation of every student at Cathedral. Boys and girls, who, during class, appeared to be definitely fatigued, assume a new energy as they take their places on the stage or in the gym. After all, another hour or so won't make too much difference. At horne, our endless chatter about our day at school is welcomed by our parents who find this an ideal way of 'bringing back their own school-day memories. After a satisfying dinner and a reasonable amount of studying fwe rnustn't forget thatl, we prepare for a little recreation. If it were Friday night fand let's pretend it isl our natural destination would 'be the C.A. Canteen. Dressed in our Sunday best we once more arrive at school, after having left' it less than four hours ago. Friends, dancing, and refreshments all aid 'in making our night an enjoyable one. After stopping somewhere for a coke or hamburger, we sleepily go to what is traditionally known as Home Sweet Home . It is no wonder then that these days are termed our l1appiest . Despite the worry, anxiety, and fatigue that accompany such pleasures, we are urged onward by that incomparable gift known as Youth . To us, twenty-four hours is hardly long enough to satisfy the innumerable activities that crowd our daily schedule. Right now, you'll pardon ine, I'm sure-fyawnj-it's been a big day!!! LUCILLE PEZZULA l60l CAN YOU EVER FUHGET ?? ? How we used to raee up the stairs trying to heat the bell. How Peggy llillenheek rushed down the hall at fl: IS. lNe wonder why? THE GRADUATES 'l'he swiftly fading speeters sweep down the hallowed halls. And bend their heads to hide the tear that glistens as it falls. These ghosts, in shrouds of memory, pass down -in silent pain As with ealm resignation They tread sweet mem,ry's lane. Ah. once they were gay figures, with life and hearty laughs, And now they pass by golden plaques that show their epitaphs. They leave with but one solace that lessens all their fears!- For they shall be remembered, Respected through the years. I ma 1 MISSIUN UNIT 0F The Miss-ion Unit of the CYO has been very active since its re-organiza- tion, October, 1947. The first mission activity undertaken was the selling ol' Christmas seals which was prompted by the 'invitation from our diocesan director to the Cathedral students to help in a little wayn the mission work carried on in our diocese by the Propa- gation of the Faith Society and the Holy Childhood Society. With much trepidation we ordered 5,000 seals. On the Hrst day of the sale, however, our fears were set aside and order after order of l,000, 2,000, 5,000 went in until we reached the grand total of sixty-six thousand. On November l0, we had three showings of a movie entitled Obey the Command which in dramatic narration told the history and the foundation of the Holy Childhood Society. As a result of seeing this movie our young missionaries, par- ticularly the grammar school children, got busy with mite boxes to ransom pagan babies. At thc end of Decem- ber, 1947, we had ransomed 25 babies, and this number is increasing every week. During the month of December, drive after drive was carried on. An appeal was made for starving chil- dren of Europen, Red Crossn, Indian lNIissions , Inmates of the Home for the Agedn, and last but not least in importance, for our own St Vincent de Paul's Society. All these appeals met with a willing and most generous spirit and response, which illustrates that the characteristic kindliness of the Cathedral student body still prevails. The spirit of doing for others is the guiding star which our students are endeavoring to follow. Far from diminishing. we hope this spirit will grow stronger in the years that lie ahead. NARDACCI H. KELLY OFF Fon A 15-Y GAIN AGAINST Col-Ions GENE Dwvrek RECOVERING Cor-Ions FUMBLE J CARPENTER CATCHING Pass AGAINST Corrons :KRD FUUTISALL Cathedral played a seven-game schedule during the l91l-7 season, winning two and losing five. Albany Academy and Cohoes High fell before Cathedral which in turn, was beaten by V.I., LaSalle, Schuyler, Catholic Central and C.B.A. Despite their losing record. Cathedral established itself as a football power in the eity, sporting a good defensive club through- out the season. 'Many' of the first stringers' will return next year and along with some of the promising subs this should turn out to be a good squad. In the opening game at Bleecker Stadium before a capacity crowd, Cathedral played Vineentian Institute. After Harry Kelly intercepted a pass late in the first half, Cathedral drove to the V.l. lf? where a V.l. player intercepted a pass and ran fifty-seven yards to the Cathedral 2-l-. Shaw, of V.l., scored a minute later on an end run. Early in the second half Harry Kelly was trapped behind his own goal attempting to pass, giv- ing V.I. two more points. This made the final score 9-0 in favor of V.l., the teams battled even for the rest of the game. End .lack Nardacci and Halfback Harry Kelly stood out for the Elm Streeters. The team 'journeyed to Troy the next week to play LaSalle Institute. A 40-yard touchdown pass in the fourth period enabled LaSalle to turn back C.A. ti-0, before 2,500 fans. The victory was l,aSalle's secondg the loss C.A.'s second. The pass caught the Cathedral safety man completely by surprise. Fleet-footecl Harry Kelly, C.A.'s chief baekfielcl opera- tive, just missed intercepting. Penalties marred the game. which was played between the 20-yard lines with the exception of the touchdown stab. Throughout the game Kelly was catch- ing the opposition oil' guard with his quick kicks, especially in the first and third periods. -lim Carpenter, C.A. Left Halfback, thwarted a LaSalle march early in the third quarter when he intercepted a pass on his ten-yard stripe. Then Cathedral started its best drive of the day, racking up three first downs to the LaSalle 41, where the bid was halted. After two close losses the 'Cathedral team played Albany Academy at Academy Field. After driving deep into Academy's territory on two occasions, one reaching the I8-yard line and the other the 24, Cathedral scored early in the second half of an sustained drive from their own 30. .lim Carpenter copped the 10-yard march by going over from the 6. Academy reached the Cathedral 4 late in the game but Ray Van Valkcnburg re- covered on the two-yard line. Final score-6-0. .lim Carpenter was outstanding with his runs in this game. Cohoes High was the next game on the schedule. Cathedral took the opening kickoff' and drove 75 yards to score- Harry Kelly scored from the 6-yard line. Cathedral scored again quickly, when, after stopping ' Cohoes for three downs, they BANNON-GORDON-HVAN VALKENHURG were forced to kick. Ronnie Miller blocked and recovered the punt, and .lim Carpenter scored a moment later. Cathedral scored again in the second half with Carpenter going over from the 7. The subs played the rest of the game with Cohoes scoring in the third period after a long drive. Mike McHugh, Cathedral Back, broke a collarbone in this game and was lost for the rest of the season. Next came the game with Schuylers' unbeaten Falcons. After exchanging punts Schuyler blocked a Cathedral punt and recovered on the 2-yard line. Lou Emmerich bucked over for Schuyler and they led 7-0. Early in the second half Schuyler took the ball on its own 40 and drove 60 yards with Joe Promiscuo scor- ing for the Falcons. Another blocked kick gave Schuyler its third touchdown in the fourth quarter. A safety in the late minutes of the game gave Schuyler its last score. The final was 21-0. Mike Alvaro played a great game at end for Cathedral. The following week C.A. played Catholic Central High School. Catholic Central took the opening kickoff on its own 20 and drove 80 yards to score. Simmons of C.C.H.S. scored from the 2. Cathedral moved the ball well between the thirty-yard line but couldn't get that scoring drive. Catholic High scored again in the fourth period on a forty yard drive with Cosmo Cocoa scoring. Later, a safety gave them a final score of 15-0. Tackle Muggsy McGraw and End jack Nardacci stood out for the Elm Streeters. In the final game of the season, Cathedral ran up against a C.B.A. team that won thc city championship. Early in the first quarter, Cathedral recovered a C.B.A. fumvble on the C.B.A. forty and drove to the C.B-A. two. But the much heavier C.B.A. line held. They punted out to the Cathedral 40. .lim Carpenter' got six yards on an end run and then threw a touchdown pass to -lack Nardacci, who raced over untouched. C.B.A.'s Tony Levitto took Muggsy McCraw's kickoff on his own 7 and raced 93 yards to tie the score. Levitto scored again late in the second period after the Brothers had recovered a Cathedral fumble on the Cathedral 45. Levitto raced over from the 10. The Brothers added two more scores late in the game. The final score was 25-6. Outstanding for the Elm Streeters were Ends .lack Nardacci and Mike Alvaro. Cathedral, as well as other teams, had men, who although not publicized, played hard and efficient ball, game after game. Among these on C.A.'s team were Bill O'Neil, dependable tackle, Ronnie Miller and Red Murphy, guardsg Ray Van Valken- burg, center, Len Cordon, Don Scoons, and .Mike McHugh, backsg and Bill Bannon, who filled in capably at any position in the line. ALVARO B.xNNoN O'NziL KELLY Sooons Ili I At the end of the season a mythical All-Albany team was picked by the coaches. End .lack Nardaeei was picked for the first team and Co-eaptains Mike Alvaro, end, and Harry Kelly, halfbaek, and taekle Muggsy,' McGraw were named to the second team. lt is also a l'must to mention Cathedral's undefeated Freshmen team, which promises to be a winning club in the future. Among these were Curro, endg Fox Zlllfl Chillolo, taeklesg Farrell, Murtaugh, and Wells, guardsg Ryniek, eenterg and the speedy haekheld Composed of Carpentier, Abhate, Ferris, and Wilpers. -T-H-E-Il-Il-A-L !
