The year nineteen hundred and thirty-two brings to our minds that bright sunny September day,'when we entered dear C. A. As that year went on we were taught the ABC's and a few fundamentals. In that same year we were prepared for our first reception of Our Lord in the HolyiEucharist. Time passed, and we found ourselves entering into the grammar grades. Here we were introduced to Englsh and History which were enlarged upon us as the years went on, and geography, which acquainted us with the different types of people in the world and their customs. The day that we had all looked forward to at last arrived. During the fourth grade, we knelt before Bishop Gibbons, the sacrament of Confirmation was bestowed upon us. A At the beginning of our seventh year in school the Iunior and Senior Orchestra was organized. Everyone was thrilled and wanted to take a part in it. After taking our first regents examination we were prepared for our final regents which would permit us to become freshmen The eighth Grade was strenuous. Everyone work d hard and soon we were ready for graduation. We all graduated and were thrilled at the thought of entering hi h school and taking our part in all the high school activities. A AS FRESHMEN With zest and also a note of awe our class began its freshman year Many new pupils enrolled and quickly acquired the renowned C A. spirit Under the guidance of Sister Helena Sister Mary Iames and Sister Eusebius, as In ga sa 9 KSN -Mi arg tsfgaimesgxqsgyafigttmisfgsfii iimiigyasfgasgyiigiig iQM .UA Q , fA'L UPA fA'9A g!'+LgZ+'S!'Af'LfZ'!A r'A 'g!fA L,l1+AYQ'AA-J' ,,,, AVA AVA A!A W! Mass, benediction and conferences comprised the program to draw us closer to God. Then down to some hard work. Oh! how did We ever struggle through Geometry and Shorthand? This year saw the advent of the 8 to I sessions prior to the Christmas vacation. A very important event occurred when our most Reverend Bishop celebrated his fiftieth year in the priesthood by a Pontifical High Mass at the Cathedral. All the students participated and presented his Excellency with a spiritual bouquet. An amusing play was presented, Sounding Brass. The beginning of Iune witnessed the annual demonstration with many of our members participating in Cooking and Sewing Activities. We say farewell to the class of ,43 and look forward to being upper classmen. ' THE HIGHER REALM . . . IUNIORS Our Iunior year will stand out as a highlight in our life at C. A. It was during the first semester that Guido Paolucci and Iohn Brown bade us fare- well to do their duty for God and country. May we pray for their safe and speedy ireturn. The Mission rally was introduced among many other C. Y. O. activities. The students endeavored to supply our servicemen with Catholic literature and also make a tridiuem for the intentions of the Pope. It was arranged in groups that each class might have a chance to present a skit dealing with some phase of Catholic action. This project proved to be very interesting and educational 'to the student body. Some new things have been added: Blue plate dinners in the cafeteriajgirls uniform jackets with the gold Auspice Maria emblem, Cathedral Lights, C. Y. O. pro- gramsg baseball games g visits from friends and classmates home on furloughg movies in the auditoriumg the Iunior and Senior promg the long to be remembered boat ride-exams- P P P successfully passed. We are seniors. THE GOAL . . . SENIORS Our most important goal has been attained. At last we are seniors. This year marked the departure of 'our faithful rector, Father Taaffe. A farewell testimonial was arranged at which time we expressed our regrets at his departure. We then had the 'honor of receiving Father Forman as our new rector. At the welcoming testimonial the student body extended their best wishes. At Christmas time, a joint party of the Senior and junior classes proved to be a huge success. This Ianuary we were honored with the arrival of St. Ioseph's pupils into our Senior class. Mrs. Scuitto is welcomed. She endeavored to assist us in public speakingg the Valentine Day Dance a real welcome to St. Ioseph's students. Spring is in the air! And so what can a poor stud nt do but dream? And of what will he dream but of days naw past? Thus does the Book of Memory fall open before the dream-filled ey s ofa Senior charmed by the breath of a new-born Spring. Chapter bv chapter he skims the story of his fast flown high school days CHAPTER I GROPING FROSH It was in the fall of 1941 that a group of bewildered freshmen presented themselves at the portals of a realm which was entirely new to them. As the gates swung open and they passed within, little by little their hearts drop- ped. The dignified and self-assured seniors, the happy, carefree juniors, but most of all the demon sophomores broughtwthe terror to these poor babes in the woodsf' The unsuspecting freshmen began public speaking under Pro- fessor McCarthy somewhat sceptically. Indeed, much talent was discovered, to our amazement both in public speaking and in dramatics. The great stars of the grammar school basketball team floundered helplessly among the members of the varsity. At the first C. Y. O. meeting a group of shy and awe-struck pupils could be seen huddled in the back seats to escape notice. The Science room held untold wonders for these most-willing-to-learn frosh. But as time progressed the darkness rolled back and a little faint ray of light began to glimmer through the horizon. But alas! As all things come to an end so did that freshman year. !lFf?EH3f!F!l QF!! 1l !lF!lF1lFll ll 9!91l !9Fl?F!lF!!Fll i!l-QF!! llXfj!!F4!, ,0XEZlL !?SH!' Ah, what a joy they were to their teachers and what a heartache to their underclassmates. It was at a Hallowe'en Party that the sophomores shone. As spectres roamed the halls of S. I. A., as witches rode on their broom sticks and as the black cat cast his shadow of doom on all, the haughty sophomores prowled the halls thinking in geometric terms or quoting most wretchedly, Latin is a dead language. First it killed the Romans 5 now it's killing me. Into this peaceful existence came the Storm, regents, but with plenty of hard work, they became a thing of the past and a turning point in the sophomores history. They were now participants where formerly they had been but by-standers. The whole school, led by the Iuniors, organized an army to buy Bonds and at a given signal went over the top, buying three Ieeps. A Red Cross Bazaar was next on the list. For weeks after, the Iuniors saw red and white spots, the result of the decorative scheme in the auditorium. The play, Here Comes, Charlie, provided a diversion from the daily routine, and the Iuniors were happy to be represented in the cast by a member of their class. The big day in their young lives was Class Day. The decorations, delicious refreshments and feeling of comradeship that prevailed made it a great success. Graduation night instilled in the Iuniors a new responsibility and a feeling of poise and leadership. The last rung of the very high ladder had been reached. They were there. CHAPTER IV SENIORS AT LAST l Oh! How wonderful wasithe beginning of that Senior year. As the now well poised, intelligent, happy seniors entered the haven that all seek, an expression of loyalty and love was apparent in their every action. The year began in a whirlwind of activity. There was the Choral Club, C.Y.O., basketbhll, a C. Y. O. Bazaar, the special program for the boys choral club and the Friday night dances, all to interest these new Seniors. There was still confusion that had to be faced by these Seniors, namely typing. The first few days in typing were hectic ones, indeed. Things eventually became well or- ganized and mbved very smoothly. All were most happy. This was the history of the Class of ,45 up to Ianuary 1945. But the history of our class would not be complete without the mention of the tragic Ere which might have placed a period to our school career. However, the kindness and thoughtfulness of our Right Reverend Bishop has made it possible for us to continue our high school work with graduation a shining goal at the end of the rainbowf, I Now the Book of Memory closes and the Book of the Future lies open before us, with smooth, white pages awaiting the touch of our pens. May the story which we write thereon be as happy and as lovely to reread as the story of our high school days. x KNHN 'I'iW1ii iIi''FTSYENFNFZNFNiiiiiimiifififivikiiiikiii?5ifFNKi1iI5ii'7NFiiiEI4i7iii75i4WiiiFRiPEi1iFN'FTii6i1i?5'Q m fh W KU'tKYJ0L!21'!ZitLE1iL!24fkqergitbyjfPLE!529521bLQ4r!j4rQ24!!Q1rk!1'+LE11PEA93193111PEisQLHsr!2e'!Z1rMM11MQ1g l X!.M!M!! !!NJf'l. - CATHEDRAL PROPHECY It is 1960. Time has marched onward, and the class of '45 of Cathedral Academy exults in the successful achievements of so many of its members. In 1957 all the sport pages of the country carried the story of Ioe Crump's magnificent record with the New York Yankees, and in that same year, Parker Evers was generally accepted as the Chicago White Sox's most valuable player. Their success was not for that season only but has lasted to the present day. Two years previous, the critics of the musical world were shouting their praises, Her voice is one in a million. They were referring to the beautiful soprano voice of Ioan Senecal now Metropolitan Opera's leading lady, who made her debut at that time into the operatic world. ' Whose lovely hands now adorn the advertisements of Chen-Yu Nail Polish? Why, none other than Grace Spagnola's, success as an advertising model is widely known. i . Speaking of models, Iohn Powerls specialist is Iean Wolf, who only four years after graduation was nationally known. 1 The success of Cathedral's secretaries and stenographers has been grati- fying. Three years ago, after being affiliated with many important law firms cf Washington, Philip Eagan was appointed stenographer for the Supreme Court. This, of course, did not come as a surprise to us. Pat Vennard and Margie Kurtz have become very efficient private sec- retaries to the presidents of two great manufacturing concerns. While Margie Thompson, Iane Keegan and Iosephine Endres are names mentioned most frequently when speaking about efficient and reliable stenographers, and are found at the desk of Albany's leading businesses. Out in the middle west the Mayo Clinic's leading surgeon has a very diligent and competent private secretary in the person of Edith D'Ambrosi. In 1958 the telegraph industry was revolutionized when Iune Tierney, in a time-saving and more economical way, introduced her remarkable new system of receiving and transmitting telegrams. - Last Ianuary another name was given prominence when Eileen Battle, R.N. was honored at a banquet because of her faithful service to the great physician, Dr. Iohn Doe in his successful efforts for cancer cure. Over East the Leahy Clinic in 1959 was most fortunate in securing Lorene Decker as superintendent of nurses. ' Marge Schuhl, who began as clerk in a Fanny Farmer's Store, now has been elected president of this great. confectionery industry. Eliiciency again proves its worth, Betty Winne has an executive position with Stoneman Paint Company. There are heroines also in the class of '45, three Cadet Nurses were honored in 1947-at a banquet at the White House at which time they 0 'UZSN o W are 'F irmilmi 'ii 'Wit ufji ir 5 -... , atm mg ii ivzitimtimirzfiiifgqv tj qpmii .figfam,m.f3i.,73i4+gi.,magi aMmmsfmpjiasfgiasfgiasmsmimmesmsmimma,K5i,imiZ54imaz5g4pf5ia.g5i 4 E Q 2 QW 33 W' 2 E af Mix 5 0521QMrMHLU0X!iZ1+X!Q1MJ4w1Q flgfilwlirffll lwfbxyll 6903210 ll. f fl - lv 'll llxgilfillfill, ,xml ll? WM! E were awarded presidential citations. Marge Virgilio, Betty Murray and Mary McGlarry proved most courageous and unfaltering in their line of duty on the battle fronts of Europe. V Two of the state's leading politicians, Ed Romanzo and Carman Travison may be found sitting leisurely behind their ofhce desks, and surprisingly their very willing and efficient secretaries are Violet Bechard and Phyllis Vignola. Since 1954 the leading insurance company of the country has been the I. A. Iones Insurance Company due mostly to the efforts and achievements of Ioan Leary, who had the distinction of being the first woman superintendent of this large organization. Business organizations seem to prosper where even the graduates af ,45 take a hand. Betty Fagan, Margie Braun and Ann Falgiano merged their talents and have prospered through the years. The famous athlete, Rav McLeer is now N. B. C.'s sports announcer. Marie Piazza, through her diligence and personality has attained the coveted post of receptionist for the exclusive Sax 5th Ave. Store. Socially active among Albanians is Carmela Libertucci, R.N. who recently received an appointment as director of the Albany Chapter of American Red Cross. A dinner tendered by the Governor of the State was the occasion to honor Barbara Bailey and Iean Measeck for the completion of seven successful years of research as laboratory technicians. Last year when the White House was completely redecorated, it was the charming interior decorator Kathryn Rider who was in charge of the entire project and never before has the White House been embellished in such splendor. Cathedral class of '45 is proud of its representative in Hollywood, Richard Rotondaro, the renowned photographer who is now MGM,s leading camera- man. During the recent conferences between French and American represenl tatives, Ernest Campbell, the famous linguist, was prominently mentioned for his invaluable assistance. The attractive advertisements for B. Altman's exclusive Fifth Ave. store, comes from the brush of Patricia Osborn, eminent commercial artist who is acting as supervisor of this prominent firm. n The erection and supervision of the splendid schools for underprivileged children, is the result of the unfailing efforts and charitableness of Miss Patricia Kemmy and Miss Alice Carlton, noted social workers of this state. The year 1957 brought the announcement of the success of Margaret Tansey, noted scientist and chemist whose brilliant research work resulted in the discovery of many invaluable aids to the medical world. 1ljliENi fcil5 llEilVei'll ll mam as misses is li 0 ll as im f.irS!21+BEli5Hir5H4b- I,eexiyfegfjevxfgibgizfixywirgifigaiikfgibififbkfjiwfrgsjiikfglvgwiiisvisliigfyirxfgibgfyiwfixfyirxszir VE BUOSU''XYZ'PEZNQ1!QZ!'M1!M1PM1'!Z1'l. iw l!MU !Z EEZ , . l!Zf'i!l'P!Z Q! That revolution in the automobile industry of a few years ago was started by Bruce Gordon with his invention of a gasless automobile. The State Education Department was happy to receive Antoinette Op- pedisano as chairman in 1950 which position she has directed with remarkable intelligence and ability. Helen McGeough is doing her 'share in the medical world by her re- searches among the elusive forms of bacteria. In 1951 Eva Harpis, noted botonist, left her laboratory to become the owner of a chain of leading florist shops in which she is now displaying many of the 'rare specimens she had perfected. One of the most popular spots in the Capital district is Robert Carr's Cafe. Many socialites of the citv including Iane Wessels, Catherine Murphy and Alitia Murphy are frequent patrons. Montgomery Ward and Company has at last recognized the prudence and capability of one member of 'that firm. Rosemary Mara was appointed chief executive. i In all branches of life, in the business, social, medical world Cathedral Lights of ,45 have proved their ability and prominence. These years from ,45 to '60 are only the beginning of honor and success throughout the coming years. Q . ST. IOSEPH'S ACADEMY Edwin Waugh, returning from a hard day's labor in the dark and dreary shafts of the Odorferous Coal Mine, sat down in his easy chair and switched on the Television set. Enraged at ,the static, blinking of lights and terrible confusion that follows, he is tinkering with the tubes as his adorable and loyal wife, the former Stella Morawski, enters. Immediately in no uncertain terms she gives her opinion of the executive, Miriam Albright of the Double Cross Mail Order House who sold them this inefficient machine. I think she is taking advantage of the fact that we were former class- mates, in order to clear out her stock of second-hand television sets. As Mrs. Waugh finished. a figure slowly appeared through the haze on the television screen, it is a Professor of English at Oxford University whom she recognized as none other than Patrick Vaccariello, classmate of hers many years ago. Devotion to the Family Rosary was particularly stressed and it was proposed that each Cathedralite carry the Rosary on his person at all times. The Mission Committee in conjunction with the Literature Committee suggested that Catholic periodicals, and the Sunday Visitor, especially, be left in public places as a means of spreading Catholic information. At the conclusion of the business session the Sophomores presented a lplay, The Masterf' after which the student body sang the Sodality Song, For Christ The King. On Halloween, the Social Action Committee inaugurated the Hrst of their Evenings of Fun when the students and many of the Alumni joined in celebrating with the Witches and the goblins. Father Hart became moderator of the C.Y.O. in November, and im- mediately Won the friendship of all the students by announcing that the ustfal Saturday evening dances would be resumed.
