His dedication to Catawba College and his unceasing un- derstanding of his fellow man make this individual a vi- tal asset to our college community. It is with much resp- ect and our warmest esteem that we, the members of the Sayakini staff, dedicate this chronicle to Dr. Lawrence Bond. Relevancy A school is for learning. Teachers are for learning. Students are to learn. As students, we play our role well. We are eager to learn, we are searching for the truth which lies in knowledge. Unsure of this truth, we keep searching. Its shape, its size, its very meaning is unknown to us. We continue our looking, our questioning, our probing, our waiting. The search has now begun, there is no chance of an end. But, if, somehow, we find a part of ourselves along the way, then there is a chance for truth. ilitalldltf ' 4 ' " ' ■ 2j - ' ■ ■-.■■.. ■ Today I am A silent man A Pensive man A Man of mind And not of body. My thoughts Have drawn me in And taken over The life of this day. If there is More than thoughts today I do not know it. For I cannot perceive Anything around me. The touchable is out of reach. The seeable - out of sight. All that is attainable Lies within my mind. But where is my mind? Somewhere in time that is not measured When the burlesque is over, When the colors of day fade to twilight gray, When the fear of dawn has died, When competition is put aside, When man has no need or desire to judge others, Then will I come to you to speak of all things and mingle our shadows. a heart breaks and a star falls that ' s not true you know when your heart breaks there are no stars. • ' . , The night was cold. I walked through it As the man of constant sorrow — Cloaked in solitude and indifference. I was colder than the night. 10 you have in your mind the way its supposed to be I thought you - you thought me. hid in a velvet smile too many years running, sometimes, I ' ve wondered who ' s peeking, most times, I ' m hid. 11 after breathing out all the foul air he owned, he said what we lower ourselves into is a childish argument they giggled, had one beer too many again, and laughed, (peace, a word, muttered, forgotten) and they laughed and laughed over such a childish argument. 12 MMSi 13 ' ' f h.i- ■ n • : . ¥ — V ►,- B 1 Administration r v College life becomes relevant when there are concerned teachers who are willing to share with the students. To share their knowledge, their wisdom, and their experi- ence is the role of the professors and administrators at Catawba. They are also students for they, too, are always learning. In a sense we are all teachers, for we all have our own knowledge, our own experi- ences. We need our teachers to serve as experienced guides, to provide us strength for our weaknesses. Sigma Pi Alpha Sigma Pi Alpha is the honorary foreign language fraternity. The meetings are always informative and entertaining. Various programs are held throughout the school year. Included in this years agenda were Dr. Wigginton, sharing slides from his summer trip to Egypt and neighboring countries, and Bing Lim who was inter- viewed about his country Indonesia. Katrina Lee also honored Sigma Pi Alpha as she told about Hong Kong and her country. At the conclusion of the year, the installation of new members is held and is beautifully performed in three languages. 153 Blue Masque In 1970-1971 Blue Masque, Catawba ' s drama club presented Tine P rime of Miss Jean Brodie, The Lion jn_ Winter and The Tempest . Blue Masque also sponsored the Ugly Man Contest during Winter Weekend. Each year the organization holds an open house to acquaint new students with Blue Masque. Each year in the spring, drama students go to New York City to see broadway shows. President David Hughes directs the monthly club meet- ings. The members tutor at the Nazareth Children ' s Home. They also have cake sales to earn money. Besides their publication of the Kappa Tau Kappa Newsletter, various programs were planned which included an audio visual demonstration, a panel discussion by first year teachers, a panel on racial problems in the schools, and a program on interviews and the filling out of applications. This club has been of great inter- est for future teachers. 158 Phi Epsilon Phi Epsilon is an honorary women ' s fraternity. The members are chosen from the top twenty women in the junior and senior classes. Existing as a service club, this year ' s activities included taking prospective Catawba students on campus tours, homecoming deco- rations in front of the cafeteria, attendance monitors for Chapel and Vespers and the annu- al award for the outstanding member of the faculty or administration. 159 i: ,-.. Advertising Club The Advertising Club conducts monthly dinner meetings with a noted business leader as guest speaker at each meeting. It is a club open to all students with concern for the business fields. It is an active club with this year ' s proj- ects including an alumni reception, two car washes, a faculty-student golf tournament and an annual Christmas party and club picnic shared jointly with the Accounting Club. Under the leadership of President Chester Abee, the Advertising Club has had active participation from its members and it has experienced a year of success in all of its projects. 0, 160 The Psi-Ki-Sigma is a new psychol- ogy club on campus. It is open to all students who have an interest in the field of psychology. The members participated in sponsoring many social activities with the local VA hospital such as dances and a college companion pro- gram. The club also engaged many speakers affiliated with all aspects of psychology and interested students traveled to Miami, Florida for the con- vention of The American Psycholo- gical Association. Psi-Ki-Sigma 161 The Circle K Club is a new organi- zation on campus this year. It is a service club of college men who are affiliated with the Kiwanis Club. The first money making project which the members undertook was the selling of candy. The Club provided halftime entertainment at one of the home football games by staging a mock Miss Circle K contest. Also, each month the club selected a woman student and crowned her the sweetheart for that month. • Circle K Club 162 163 Student Christian Association 1 This year has been both unique and different for the SCA. For the first time the club became an unstructured organization when the officers voted to eliminate the four commissions. The club, however, did not abandon all traditional activities. The Nazareth Children ' s Home is still a favorite proj- ect of all SCA big brothers and sisters. Also, SCA members helped launch the year by sponsoring the Singspiration and welcoming new students at the President ' s Reception. The club sold mums at Homecoming and staged a live Nativity Scene at Christmas. Besides these traditional activities, the SCA has made some important innovations. Perhaps the most valuable of these are the 11:30 A.M. Sunday worship services. These services enable students to attend church every Sunday on campus for the first time. Besides this, the SCA has offered students much enjoyment and reward through Religious Perspectives Week, bull sessions at the Place, a Christmas Singspiration, swimming parties, and relaxers. 164 I PI yggff3 $4 165 I ■ ■ ' ' " ' . y i : «i] . i ■ ■ . ■. . . 166 9HB , " ' ..;. -s ■ ' :■: 167 Band The Catawba College Band now performs at all home basketball games along with their other activities which include marching during football games, concert per- formances, an annual May Day performance, and an out of state band tour. These additions to the Catawba College Band give Mr. Suggs and the rest of the members great hopes for an even more impressive future. 168 Jm 169 Woman ' s Athletic Association WAA sponsors, directs and supervises all women ' s in- tramural sports throughout the year. The club also sponsors the varsity tennis, hockey, and basketball teams. In the fall WAA introduces Catawba girls to their officers and activities at a picnic. The objectives of the club are to create and stimulate wide, intelligent, and active interest and participation in health, physical education, and recreational activities, and to cooperate with school, state, and national organi- zations to secure special information and improved teaching methods. The powderpuff football game and field day are annual projects of the club. Major ' s Club - 172 Accounting Club The Accounting Club of 1970-71 has set two major objectives toward which it has attempted to strive. One is to enhance its present loan fund in an attempt to initiate a limited scholar- ship program. The second and perennial objective is to continue exposing students in- terested in business and accounting to out- standing men and firms in the profession. Through its monthly meetings, the club attempts to bring the student and his profes- sion together in hopes of instilling an attitude of admiration and mutual respect. m 173 Astronomy Club The purpose of the astronomy club has been to promote an interest in astronomy. Since we have the largest observatory in the state and an excellent plane- tarium, the facilities are outstanding. The club this year has been concerned with photography, and club members have taken numerous pictures through the telescope of the moon and various planets. Many students were on hand to view the moon eclipse in Feb- ruary. The club members have also assisted at the observatory and planetarium programs given for school groups and the general public. 174 m Wantu Wazuri Society The Wantu Wazuri Society was organized this year through the efforts of the black students on campus. To fulfill their aims they endeavored to promote and encourage understanding and a sense of unity among black students. Through their desires to reach the campus community, they encouraged the college toward a greater awareness and appreciation of the culture and contributions of black peo- ple. The brevity of their aims included the desire to support the black community in Salisbury. V 4 ■ H i 175 Choir The choir is a group of forty voices selected by audition. Under the direction of Dr. Bond, the choir toured the Pennsylvania and Maryland area during spring break. Other activities included special televi- sion appearances, the release of their new record, and the famous hoagie sales. The modern ensemble, a small group of fine singers selected from the choir, performed music of a lighter nature on campus and in the community. 176 I I " , - . • — yj 177 I Ars de Musica Ars de Musica, under advisor Mrs. Epperson, urges students to participate in musical activities both on and off campus. This includes concert series and local musical events. Students are also encouraged to perform musically. The club endeavors to make music a vital part of campus life to all the students at Catawba. It is the only music related club on campus. 1 178 Glee Club The singers in the Glee Club express each song with modern movements of dance. It provides fun and excitement for those who enjoy up to date music. Members are chosen by audition and requirements are a desire to sing, eager interest and willing attendance. The purpose of the club is self enjoyment and entertainment of others. 179 Pioneer Staff A first year Journalism class and the change to a more efficient printing company have been vital factors in the production of a better Pio- neer for the 1970-71 academic year. News, features, editorials — opinions are all a part of the campus newspaper. The Journal- ism class, under the direction of Mrs. Stanback, has been extremely helpful in providing much of this needed " copy " for the 1970-71 Pioneer . Under the able direction of editor Jim Kreh, the staff has added many changes to the news- paper including a new grade of paper while at the same time they have retained the vital features of the open editorial policy and the free voicing of opinions. Jim Kreh, Editor-in-chief Dolan Hubbard, Feature Editor 180 Greg Bowers, Diane Dillon, Staff Writers Randy Klopp, Business Manager Jason Lesley, Sports Editor 181 Vincent Withers, Feature Editor Beng Lim, Photographer Nancy Roakes, New Editor 182 Sayakini Staff A year passes quickly for the members of the Sayakini staff. The staff has worked many long and hard hours to produce the college yearbook. They have strived to create a book which will serve as each student ' s personal record of memories. There are some answers, But mostly questions. What I see makes me think: Who am I? Why? Where is truth hiding? Or am I hiding? I am still looking, but I ' m not alone; For I see you And you ' re standing, too, Showing me the world.
