Adviser President Vice-President gall. Saumaii, Secretary .... 196 Treasurer Membership in National Honor Society Highest Honor That May Be Attained While at Catalina WRTIUII N0 5218 'P T Becoming a member of National Hon- or Society is the greatest honor that a student can receive while at Catalina. Scholarship, character, leadership, and service are the precepts of NHS. In order to qualify for membership a person must have a 1.8 grade average for his entire highschool career, no semester 4's and no semester U's. A junior must be in the upper IOWQ of his class, a senior in the upper 15 Wa. His character, leadership, and service qualifications are also con- sidered by the faculty in selecting new members. Any student failing to live up to the standards of the organization may be dropped after initiation. NHS was organized in 1921 when teachers and educators felt that compared QW We- A.. MQW iwwiaaa Mara dieezzsa,-az.. Mia with social activities, scholarship was not receiving enough emphasis. Therefore Na- tional Honor Society, then known as the American Torch Society, was organized to balance the gap. Since 1921, the or- ganization has grown rapidly. There are over 6,000 chapters, Catalina being num- ber 6,l44. During the year the club contributed to the revolving fund of the American Field Service, a fund which is set aside for an AFS exchange student from Catalina who could not otherwise afford the passage abroad. Members tutored other students who needed help in various subjects. Two initiations were held this year, one in January and one in May. Y '? Girls League is a democratic organi- zation for all girls in Catalina High. Every girl at CHS is a member, but to be a voting member, she must attend three regular meetings. The meetings were held on the third Thursday of each month. The purpose of the club is to give girls an opportunity to participate in co- operative activities. Various projects planned by Girls League were a coke party for the fresh- man girls, a food and clothing drive, and a fashion show. Parents were given the chance to come to GL meetings when the Dad-Daughter Box Supper and Mother- Daughter Dessert were held. At the end of each year, a scholarship is presented to a graduating senior who has been ac- tive in Girls League. Working with Emily Kittle, president, were the other ollicers and the Girls League council, composed of all the com- mittee heads. Sally Contzen iilled the capacity of vice-president, while Nancy Helm held the job of secretary. The GL council is formed by the heads of the dilferent committees.
