Adviser President Vice-President gall. Saumaii, Secretary .... 196 Treasurer Membership in National Honor Society Highest Honor That May Be Attained While at Catalina WRTIUII N0 5218 'P T Becoming a member of National Hon- or Society is the greatest honor that a student can receive while at Catalina. Scholarship, character, leadership, and service are the precepts of NHS. In order to qualify for membership a person must have a 1.8 grade average for his entire highschool career, no semester 4's and no semester U's. A junior must be in the upper IOWQ of his class, a senior in the upper 15 Wa. His character, leadership, and service qualifications are also con- sidered by the faculty in selecting new members. Any student failing to live up to the standards of the organization may be dropped after initiation. NHS was organized in 1921 when teachers and educators felt that compared QW We- A.. MQW iwwiaaa Mara dieezzsa,-az.. Mia with social activities, scholarship was not receiving enough emphasis. Therefore Na- tional Honor Society, then known as the American Torch Society, was organized to balance the gap. Since 1921, the or- ganization has grown rapidly. There are over 6,000 chapters, Catalina being num- ber 6,l44. During the year the club contributed to the revolving fund of the American Field Service, a fund which is set aside for an AFS exchange student from Catalina who could not otherwise afford the passage abroad. Members tutored other students who needed help in various subjects. Two initiations were held this year, one in January and one in May. Y '? The Christmas show, the operetta, the tour of Scottsdale, and a dance symposium highlighted the year. The Nutcracker Suite was per- formed for the Christmas program and also while on tour. The girls choreo- graphed the dances in Bells Are Ringing and designed their own costumes. This dance group also performed at a mixer and basketball game. Much hard work went into these programs. Although they presented fewer programs than before, the quality of these was superior. f ' 1 . , Q 60669 ,JLJZM 7 Q? jug' ' Virginia Robinson, Adviser 1 'fl Q-'A 114' I, ,gd Q +4 I 2 '- I J ,Q fvfreefda 50426 by ,mer fdffffmg , ' 5f'wCZ4f!
