Homemaking Provides Balanced Background Catalina's homemaking department, under the direction of Mrs. Xenia Hause- halter, strives to give each girl participat- ing in the course, a well rounded back- ground in home living. Six phases of homemaking are taught. These are: home management, food preparation, family relations, care of clothing, finance, and solving personal problems. This year a new class was tried. It was called Homeliving and consisted of both boys and girls. Subjects such as shopping. family life, and buying for the home were covered. The teachers utilized outside speakers, audio-visual aids, and modern equipment in instructing students. Throughout the year the students kept displays concerning fashion in the display cases outside of the Home Economics rooms. The sewing classes also put on a fashion show to :vliich their parents and any other inter- vsfed persons were invited. This course, distribu- tive education, gives the student an op- portunity to gain direct experience in selling and business education by work- ing in a downtown business. Approximately 1030 students took courses offered by this department. A beginning student acquires a general knowledge of business procedures while an advanced student seeks to train him- self for vocational eilciciency. Mrs. Charlotte Proper instructs Joan Angus in Business Education. Drivers Ed Teaches Arizona Motor Law Every sophomore is required to take Drivers Education. The student receives instruction in Arizona law relating to operation of motor vehicles which en- ables him to pass the test for a driver's license more easily. Drivers training not only teaches the student how to drive but also includes care and understanding of the car. Catalina is equipped with facilities and teachers to enable pupils to explore many areas of industrial life. Courses included in this department are woodworking, general metals, sheet metal, welding, machine shop, auto mechanics, radio, electricity, graphic arts, drafting, mechanical drawing, and photography. Read- 1ng,.writing, speaking, and listening are the important parts of a language. Teachers stress spelling, vocabulary, grammar, written expression, and an ap- preciation of ancient and modern litera- ture. With the exception of Latin, the purpose of taking a foreign language is to learn to speak it fluently.
