Only three lettermen, Jim Allen, Richard Johnsrud, and Steve Tofel, returned from the '59 squad, which compiled a 17-2 won-lost record. After seeing his twenty-one proteges score tive conse- cutive victories at the beginning of the season, Coach Keith Meenan predicted that the 1960 team would do at least as well as the players from the preceding year. As in the previous season, the Trojans' strongest op- ponent was star-studded Tucson High. The doubles team of Nick Fenech and Jack Neasham won the state doubles championship in 1959. This marked the first time in Catalina history that a Trojan net duo had won such an honor. Since the Blue and White will lose only three men because of graduation, next year's team should be one of the most experienced squads ever put together at Catalina. sa! 4 3, 4 - f A f -r , 4. . ff 2' A A ffffiff'-' mf 4 5' . f I I , f , K , .4 M A I, win .aff W!! With the season more than half completed, the Blue and White marksmen were unde- feated in interscholastic competition. Pacing the seventeen-man squad was junior, May Mickelsen. In 1959 May was the Southwestern Regional Junior Women's Champion, and ranked sixth in her class nationally. According to Coach Kuhn rifle marksmanship is the one sport in which both boys and girls can compete on an equal basis. He is quick to add, however, that boys generally make better marksmen-if they try hard enough. This was perhaps the last year for the rifle team at Catalina. Near the beginning of the second semester, School Superintendent Robert Morrow announced that the sport will be discontinued starting next year.
