Thinelads Finish Fifth In State Meet Row I: Rick Haller, Paul Cummings, Barry Bingham, Jim Balogh, Tee Cook, Harold Slavens. Row 2: Jim Moore, Dave Fithian, Lewis Greenberg, Hugh Ferguson, Pepe Buttacavoli, Phil Hastings, John Donner. Row 3: Noel Drury, Bob Hinkle, Mike Norvelle, George Cooper, Dusty Davison, Steve Patzman, Charles Fowler. Hard work is the only way to erase hard luck! This apparently was the slogan of the undermanned and inexperienced cross country squad this year. Starting off the season with a humiliating loss to the school wrestling team, the thinclads improved with every meet and concluded their schedule by capturing fifth place in the state tournament. In the first race of the season, the distance men lost to Bisbee 50-15 flow score winsl. They then outran Rincon to defeat the Rangers 25-36. In the Thunder- bird Invitational at Glendale, Catalina took ninth place in a field of ten schools. After whipping Salpointe 24-37, the Blue and White lost to Tucson and Pueblo by identical scores of 39-20. In the annual Tucson area 156 Turkey Day Run, the thinclads were third out of six teams. The prepsters then lost a heartbreaker to North Phoenix by a score of 29-28. In the Pueblo Invitational Catalina took sixth place. As previously mentioned the Blue and White turned the tables on the experts by snaring fifth place in the state meet ahead of fourteen dumbfounded competitors. Top men for the thinclads were sophomore John Donner, who took fourth spot in the state tournament, and Tee Cook, who captured fifth place in the same race. Boys winning letters for the 1959 season were Tee Cook, George Cooper, Dusty Davison, John Donner, Dave Fithian, Charlie Fowler, Rick Haller, Jim Moore, and Harold Slavens. Wil H'-l OOOOOOO O20 i

manists Defend State Title 1 Row 1: Bob Brown, Bob Shamas, John Holmes, Larry Mitchell, Tom Kerby, Coach Rittenhouse, Rex.Wheeler, Frank Burch, Dennis Halter, Jack Holman, Ike Rhodes, Steve Hayden. Row 2: Rick Eldred, Steffan Monk, John Voss, Bill Strait, Jack Keenan, Dave Getty, Ray Arnold, Larry Ashton, Jim Meinhart, Vern Price. Six returning lettermen--Ray Amold, Steve Hayden, Jack Holman, John Holmes, Larry Mitchell, and Ike Rhodes-formed the nucleus of Catalina's defending state champion gymnatics team. Not counting on equal- ling last year's great 9-1 won-lost record, Coach Ritz Rittenhouse termed this season as one of rebuilding. All-around performer on the sixteen member squad was junior, Ray Arnold. Ray, who was state champion on the trampoline in 1959, also competes in the other gymnastics events of free exercise, rope climb, tumbling, high bar, parallel bars, flying rings, still rings, side horse, and long horse. Other standouts on the squad were senior Bob Brown doing the rope climb and senior Jack Holman on the side horse and in free exercise. 158 March 4 Catalina March 15 Catalina March 18 Catalina March 25 Catalina April l Catalina April 8 Catalina Coach Ritz Rittenhouse 1960 Gymnastics Schedule vs. Rincon vs. Tucson vs. Pueblo vs. Phoenix Union vs. Washington vs. Central April I3 Catalina vs. Pueblo April 19 Catalina vs. Tucson A 'l 22 pri Catalina vs. Rincon April 29 Catalina vs. Phoenix Union May 13 State Tournament
