This year's freshman football squad was small, both in size and number. Fifty-eight boys reported for practice in September, but by the end of the season this group had been reduced to twenty-eight pigskinners. It is hoped that these remaining players will develop into a fine varsity team in the future. The season record of four wins and six losses does not indicate the type of football which characterized the team according to Coaches Mel Vogel and Ev Nicholson. The Colts successfully opened their season with a 12-7 victory over Casa Grande. Pueblo turned the tables in the next outing as Catalina fell 7-12. Flowing Wells then decisioned the Colts 6-26. Amphi followed suit by squeez- ing past the frosh with a 7-13 triumph. The Colts regained the initiative the next week by dropping Tucson 19-14. They made it two in a row by edging Rincon 12-7. The Salpointe frosh squad was the next victim as the Colts swamped the parochial school 39-6. In the second meet- ing of the year with Pueblo, the cross-town school made a clean sweep of the season, annihilating the Colts 6-39. Sunnyside proved' a little too strong for the Blue and White by eking out a 13-14 victory. Led by quarterback Tom Murphy, who threw twenty- three touchdown passes in the season, the 1959 edition of the Catalina junior varsity team finished the season with an 8-2 record. Coached by Bob Swanson and Theron Bradford, the Little Trojans won the city j.v. champion- ship, symbolic of football supremacy in the Tucson area. Opening with a 6-25 trouncing at the hands of Sal- pointe, the jayvees won their next two in a row over Casa Grande and Rincon, 33-6 and 20-6 respectively. The second defeat of the season came at the hands of a power- ful Mesa team, 20-40. Returning home, the Little Trojans handed out a mauling of their own as they pummeled Amphi to the tune of 51-0. Next the team met and de- The j.v. squad extended its winning streak to three in a row as they kayoed the Rincon Deputies 19-12. Journey- ing to Salpointe the following week, the Blue and White avenged an earlier loss by coming from behind to wallop the Little Lancers 41-27. In the city championship game against Pueblo, quarterback Murphy led his teammates to a 19-7 halftime lead. Pueblo roared back to tie the score at 19 apiece in the second half. A touchdown pass from Murphy to Clive Seal put the Little Trojans ahead 26-19. With one minute left in the game, Pueblo scored another touchdown. The extra point pass attempt was intercepted and Catalina won 26-25.
