An outstanding broken-iield runner, Tom was se- lected for all-city and all-Class AA honors. He played three seasons on the squad. E gm 2 35 Q Frank Lochner played right guard on the Blue and White pigskin squad this year. A two-season vet- eran, Frank was also senior class president. He hopes to enroll in the University of Arizona after graduation. ass . it XX. ' , q S vw is Playing left tackle on the '59 foot- ball eleven was Ed McGlothin. This 17-year old senior also com- petes on the Trojan track squad. Ed plans to become an electrical engineer upon graduation from Catalina. Badgers Crush Catalina With injured left halfback Tom Kosser out of the lineup for the second consecutive week, Catalinais Trojans were unable to muster an effective offensive against cross-town rival Tucson High, as they fell to the Badgers, 7-26. The only tally for the Blue and White came early in the second period with Don Hawk driving over the goal from the 6 yard line. Leading Catalina on the defense was left halfback Bob Svob. Bob brought virtual consternation to the Badger offense by continually charging in from his secondary position to spill the ball carrier. In summing up the game, Trojan mentor Ken Pearson blamed the loss on the fact that, 'fWe just didn't have enough horsesf, Scottsdale Annihilates Trojans 44-14 Scottsdale's dauntless Beavers broached the walls of the Trojan defense and crushed Catalina 44-14 in a night game played on Oct. 23. Two fourth quarter pass plays from Neal Genda to reserve halfback Tee Cook and end Alan Head kept the Trojans from being goose-egged in the contest. Jim Nichols accounted for both points after touchdown. After the game, Scottsdale coach Virgil Savage was quoted as saying that Catalina didn't look like it wanted any part of last week's gamef, He later apologized by phone to Coach Pearson and wrote a letter to the squad. In his apology he stated, ul have high respect for Ken Pearson, his team and the Catalina student body. SV1 Tom Kosser gains 10 yards on an end sweep against Phoenix En Central Bobcats Edge Trojans 14-13 500 Trojan rooters, in Phoenix for the annual out-of- town game, cheered in vain as Catalina dropped a close 13-14 decision to the Phoenix Central Bobcats on Oct. 3. Scoring all their points in the first quarter, the Blue and White drive sputtered and died as the Bobcats came roar- ing back in the second half to not only edge the Trojans in points but to overwhelm them in the battle of statistics. Halfback Tom Kosser scored the Hrst touchdown for the Blue and White when he sped 60 yards for the tally with 3:48 left in the Hrst quarter. Right halfback Don Hawk crossed the goal for the Trojans for their second touchdown when he ran thirty yards around left end to d Tom Kenan snags a pass in the Scottsdale game Rincon Goes On Rampage Against Catalina Rincon's rambling Rangers smashed the walls of Troy and soundly defeated the Catalina Trojans 27-6 in the first pigskin clash between the two schools. Ranger halfback Bill Spriggs passed for two touchdowns and ran two more over as he led the Rangers to victory. Neal Genda saved the Trojans from a whitewash by lugging the ball over from the two yard line early in the second period to temporarily tie the game up at 6-all. However, Spriggs and company came bounding back to score two more touchdowns. in the second period to take a 20-6 halftime lead. In the third period, Spriggs passed to Joe Morris for the final score of the evening. score standing up. Alternating between center and extra point specialist on the foot- ball squad was Jim Nichols. Jim, a 17-year old senior, was on the varsity team for two years. He plans to major in P.E. in college. 130 Rick Parrish, 17-year old senior guard, completed his second year on the varsity squad this season. He is also a catcher on the Trojan baseball nine. i A Rincon blocker knocks out Dave Berg as Ranger halfback Trojans Dave Berg 1153, Jeff Sh0fl1Cl' 1333, and B013 Gaylord Bill Spriggs racgs to 3 touchdown C851 smother Ranger ball carrier Burl Blesterfield for a short loss Catalina Swamped By Flagstaff A pair of Flagstaff Eagles, Clyde Joe and Jack Miller, coupled with a rain-soaked field and 40 degree weather proved too much for a cold Catalina eleven as the Trojans fell 6-26. Catalina got an early break by recovering a Flagstaff fumble inside the Eagle ten yard line. Moments later, Neal Genda lugged the pigskin over from the one yard line for Catalina's first and only tally of the night. The conversion attempt failed and the Trojans led 6-O. The Eagles took the lead in the third quarter of play when halfback Clyde Joe sprinted nine yards to paydirt. The Blue and White were unable to regain the initiative, and Flagstaff scored twice more in the final period to put the game on ice. Trojans Whip Amphi 14-7 Catalina's fighting Trojans coupled Amphi bobbles and the passing of quarterback Dave Berg to hand the Amphi- theater Panthers a 14-7 defeat in an intracity pigskin contest. The Trojans, who entered the game as slight underdogs, upset pre-game forecasts and ended a six game losing streak. Amphi took the opening kickoff and scored its touch- down a scant four minutes later when Glenn Ezell carried the ball over from the one on a quarterback sneak. The teams traded the ball back and forth until the closing minutes of the half, when Catalina took the ball on its own 12 yard line and marched 88 yards to paydin. Don Hawk put the game on ice in the third quarter by crossing into the end zone from the one. Starting left end for the Blue and White this season was senior, Tom Kenanf Tom, 17 years of age, has been on the varsity team for two years. He is also a sprinter on the track squad and a member of the Lettermen's Club 132 Senior halfback Don Hawk was the latter half of Catalina's one- two offensive rushing punch this season. Playing his third year on the varsity squad, Don hopes to take up machine drawing when he graduates 18-year old senior Neal Genda was the starting fullback on this year's pigskin squad. Completing his third year on the team, Neal also played basketball for the Trojans in addi- gon to being student body presi- ent.
