ienda, Mike 1 s Senior Dave Berg played his third season as quarterback of the Tro- jan eleven and was selected all-city quarterback for 1959. Dave is 18 years old and also plays basketball and baseball for the Blue and White. Mike Dietz, an 18-year old senior, played first string tackle on the '59 Trojan squad. Mike, a two-year letterman, plans to attend the Uni- versity of Arizona after graduation and major in Business Administra- tion. Starting center for the Blue and White this season was Bob Gay- lord. Bob, a 17-year old senior, has played on the varsity squad for three years. He plans to earn a law degree after graduation from Catalina. Trojans Outlast Lancers Two thousand fans watched the Catalina Trojans open their 1959 season with a 13-6 victory over a surprisingly strong Salpointe eleven. The Trojans scored twice in the first half with touch- downs by halfback Tom Kosser and Don Hawk. Hawk took a pitchout from quarterback Dave Berg and raced over the goal line from the 8. Kosser ran 54 yards through the middle of the Lancer line in the closing seconds of the first half to score Catalina's second touchdown. An outbreak of fumbleitis prevented the Trojans from running up a higher score. Four times Salpointe recovered Catalina miscues. When the final gun sounded, the Trojans were on the Salpointe one yard line. Catalina Loses Heartbreaker to Mesa 20-26 Mesa's J ackrabbits came from behind to edge Catalina in a thrill-packed game played before 3800 avid fans at the Trojan stadium on Sept. 25. Down 19-20 in the fourth quarter, the Jackrabbits made a sustained 73 yard drive and capped it by driving over the goal line for the deciding tally. Scoring for the Blue and White were Lefthalf Tom Kosser on a 30 yard scamper off right tackleg end Tom Kenan on a 28 yard aerial play from quarterback Dave Berg, and fullback Neal Genda on a 6 yard pass from Berg. Bread and butter man for the Trojans, Tom Kosser was the gamels leading ground-gainer with a total of 132 yards gained rushing. SV1 Tom Kosser gains 10 yards on an end sweep against Phoenix En Central Bobcats Edge Trojans 14-13 500 Trojan rooters, in Phoenix for the annual out-of- town game, cheered in vain as Catalina dropped a close 13-14 decision to the Phoenix Central Bobcats on Oct. 3. Scoring all their points in the first quarter, the Blue and White drive sputtered and died as the Bobcats came roar- ing back in the second half to not only edge the Trojans in points but to overwhelm them in the battle of statistics. Halfback Tom Kosser scored the Hrst touchdown for the Blue and White when he sped 60 yards for the tally with 3:48 left in the Hrst quarter. Right halfback Don Hawk crossed the goal for the Trojans for their second touchdown when he ran thirty yards around left end to d Tom Kenan snags a pass in the Scottsdale game Rincon Goes On Rampage Against Catalina Rincon's rambling Rangers smashed the walls of Troy and soundly defeated the Catalina Trojans 27-6 in the first pigskin clash between the two schools. Ranger halfback Bill Spriggs passed for two touchdowns and ran two more over as he led the Rangers to victory. Neal Genda saved the Trojans from a whitewash by lugging the ball over from the two yard line early in the second period to temporarily tie the game up at 6-all. However, Spriggs and company came bounding back to score two more touchdowns. in the second period to take a 20-6 halftime lead. In the third period, Spriggs passed to Joe Morris for the final score of the evening. score standing up. Alternating between center and extra point specialist on the foot- ball squad was Jim Nichols. Jim, a 17-year old senior, was on the varsity team for two years. He plans to major in P.E. in college. 130 Rick Parrish, 17-year old senior guard, completed his second year on the varsity squad this season. He is also a catcher on the Trojan baseball nine.
