268 A 'Cappella members sing out Christmas cheer as they entertain students of C.V.H.S. at the annual Christmas assembly. Bringing song to Castro Valley assemblies and stage productions was the job of the A'Cappella choir and Mad- rigals. Directed by Mrs. Phyllis Whayne, A'Cappella performed for the student body many times throughout the year. All of the cast members of C.V.'s spring musical South Pacific were A'Cappella sing- ers and the entire choir sang at the annual Christmas as- sembly. Members of A'Cappe1la who exhibited special talents were eligible for the music honor society, During fourth period class, A'Cappella rehearses a number from the spring musical, South Pacific. auth Paci ic Bass and tenor sections of A'Cappe11a take abreak from one of their many rehearsals. Nellie Forbush CRobln Baxterj goes through I'm in Love With a Wonderful Guy during a night rehearsal. Blll Robertson, Randy Loyd, and Jim Loder go through a scene in rehearsal. The Broadway musical South Pacific brought a bit of the south seas to Castro Valley. This musical, by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein Il, was presented by C.V.'s Fine Arts Area and was directed by Mrs. Phyllis Whayne and Mrs. Donna Russell. Mr. Elliot Charnow directed the orchestra. The play was about sailors stationed on an island in the South Pacific and the relationship be- tween a navy nurse and a French planter. Robin Baxter, who portrayed Nellie Forbush, and Ken Bass, who played Emile DeBeque, were in the leading roles, and were supported by Randy Loyd as Lt.
