X Y If ii 15 if The cast, Sue Camper, Dan Quan, Kathy Hail, and Marshall Perry, practices a difficult scene at one of its many rehearsals. l Makes Glass Menagerie Big Hit Fall Play Cast SUE CAMPER Laura KATHY HAIL Amanda DAN QUAN Narrator and Tom MARSHALL PERRY Gentleman Caller Stark drama came to the stage of Castro Valley High School with the presentation of 'le Glass Menagerie. Tennessee Williams' great semi- autobiographical play was the fall pro- duction of the Fine Arts Area and was directed by Mrs. Donna Russell. It re-created the conflict between an aging southern belle and her timid, crippled daughter. One feature of this play that makes it unique among modern dramas is that one of its characters also plays the narrator and tells the audience what has hap- pened in the time intervals between scenes. The C.V. version made sev- eral other changes in the original play, including the absence of props, a bare stage, and an unusual use of lighting. The cast consisted of Kathy Hail, who played Amanda, the dom- ineering motherg Dan Quan, who por- trayed Tom, Amanda's son and the narratorg Sue Camper, who played Laura, the crippled daughterg and Marshall Perry, who played Jim, the gentleman caller. The play con- cerns itself in the first act, Prep- arations for the Gentleman Caller , with the feverish preparations that Amanda makes for a visit from one of Laura's old schoolmates. Act Il The Gentleman Calls, involves the long awaited, and on Laura's part, much feared meeting between her and an old beau. 251
