E nliven Social ludies During elections Linda Slaugh, Gus Nelson, Ody Milton, and John Rusteika have an informal debate on'their choice of candidates. At Back-to-School Night, parents of Junior students listen as Mr. Hendsch tells of the goals for the coming year. U,S, History students Brian Kalsbeck a.nd Diane May are made aware of the importance of the U S, in world affairs. Freshman social studies students learn of the expected qualities of Spartans, as Mr. Hahn gives an introduc- torv lecture. To promote interest in this year's presidential cam- paign, Mr. Hendsch develops a bulletin board of the candidates. 229

228 Mr. Hahn finds explaining the Nazi Regime to Freshman Social Studies students a stimulating topic. Substitutes, such as Mr. Chaney, work with Social Studies students so progress is not halted by a teacher's absence. urrent Politics :gangst- Doing Worksheets on the colonial life in America gives Miss Midd1eton's U,S, History class background for further study. Since 1964 was a Presidental elec- tion year, social studies classes at C. V. had many topics for debate and discussion. Among other changes , course names were switched to World Geo- graphy, World History, U.S. History and American Government and Senior Problems. Through discussion and ex- change of views social studies teachers hoped to make better informed citizens out of all their students. Surprise quizzes catch Ken Bertelson, Vicki Thurber, and Ed Collyer with questions about U.S, History. L-my me , , i, L... Social Studies lectures on the formation of the Constitution provide Randy Van Arsdale, Kathy Buckorn, Nancy DeLima, Paula Blake, and Janet Menconi with information on American History.
