In a world that relies increasingly on mathematics and science, teachers at Castro Valley worked hard this year to prepare students for careers in this field. In this constantly changing department, this year's modification was concentrated mainly in the science field. Biology and chemistry were changed by two new pro- grams, chem study and B.S.C.S, Biology. These new approaches to science allowed students to learn natural concepts through experimentation rather than through memorization of specific facts. Science courses offered at Castro Valley included General Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. In the math department teachers sought to teach their students how to solve problems that have always challenged and fascinated man. Mathematics courses given here were General Math, Algebra, Geometry and Intermediate Math. In math- science courses, teachers attempted to give students knowledge that will help them in later life. Algebraic problems take deep concentration, but Jerry Armstrong and Sue Berger find time to relax for a moment before resuming study. In Chemistry class, Pete Edrington concentrates on exaciness MY-AlflT1211Hif1SfI'l1CtSC2I1e9H TTUBISOH when using weights experiment which measures the heat
