Spartan cagers listen to Mr. Cole explain a play during time out. Gary Kerr C532 recovers one ofhis 162 seasonal rebounds. For the second consecutive year Castro Valley's Varsity basketball team finished fourth in the H.A.A.L. championship race. Coach Terry Cole's team compiled a record of 10 wins and 11 loses, with a six-and-eight mark in league play. The Varsity cagers scored a total of 1,202 points, an average of 57.2 per game, while all their opponents scored 1,237, an average of 58.9 per game. Individual stars, selected by their teamates, were Gary Kerr, most valuable player, Tom Beck, best defensive player, and Bob Kellogg, most inspi- rational. Tempers flare in the league opener with Mt. Eden. Spartan Tom Beck Qrightj eludes two Tennyson Lancers. The Varsity gets a pep talk before the start of the game. 143

Castro Valley's J,V, basketball team played better than its 8-14 season record indicated. Coached by Mr. John Brosnan the J.V,'s finished sixth in H.A.A.L. competition with a 5-11 league record. Despite its losing record the J.V. team was outscored by all its opponents by a mere 61 points as they averaged 38 points per game to the opposition's 41. Outstanding individual players on the team were juniors Buddy Perry, who led the team in rebounding and Curt Young, who led the J.V,'s in scoring with an average of 9.6 points per game. 4 .,,..,,, ,.
