Students Sho I Larry Brown solders some wires for his project in Electricity l-2. Many Spartans are interested in the In- dustrial Arts as training for such future oc- cupations as electricity, forestry, and carpentry. Others, however, are simply interested in supplementing their general knowledge. There are a wide variety of subjects from which to choose. Courses offered are Wood Shop, Electronics, Radio, General Metals, Art Metals, Auto Shop, Mechanical Drawing, Horticulture, Forestry, Shop Service, and Land Design. All liking to work with their hands, the projects made by these students are displayed in exhibits around the school and state. The course in greatest demand is Mechanical Drawing in which students review math, take up freehand sketching, orthographic projection, geometric problems, blueprint reading, use and care of instruments, sectional drawing and auxiliary views. Art Metals involves selection, design, and construction of objects made of brass, copper, aluminum, and nickel silver. Work in plastics for home and personal use is also done. This course develops interest for craftsman- ship and industrial applications of metal work with trial applications of metal work with copper enameling and tooling, etching of metal and soldering. Auto Shop includes the principles of the internal combustion engine-- its functions, operation, and maintenance. More advanced courses go into actual analysis and rebuilding of engines and operation and repair of power train and electrical systems. General Metals includes a wide variety of metal work using simple tools and processes. Class discussions and problems, demonstrations, reference reading and special studies afford experiences that assure growth in knowledge and under- standing of the technical information as well as skills. Landscape Design provides an opportunity to work with tools in the garden area, to pro- pagate plants in the green house, and to create and prepare landscape designs. Many of the skills acquired by the students in these classes will prepare them for the future. Dennis Balletto, Steve McDonald Steve Kostal uses the jointer in Woodshop 4 -7.
