Sandy Halladay tries hard to interest her listeners in Public Speaking. In answer to various interests, Castro Valley's Language Arts Area provides awide variety of subjects. Its foreign language courses including French, German, and Spanish, teach not only how to speak, write, and read the language but also the culture, history, and customs of the country from which it comes. Basic English courses give instruction in grammar, vocabulary, and lit- erature. Those wishing to do more writing and reading. in their English courses take American Literature in their Junior year and Senior Literature and Composition in the following year. Special Language Arts courses taken as electives by juniors and seniors are' Publications, Journalism, Drama, Public Speaking, and Directed Reading. Publications, responsible for putting out the yearbook, and Journalism for the newspaper, provide students with experience in carrying responsibility and working inde- pendently. Those taking Public Speaking learn how to deliver effective speechs and take stands in debates. Drama, a Fine Arts course, can also be taken for credit as an English elective by students who wish to learn and improve acting skills. - Ma , it, S Susie Sutton and Joan Phillips participate in a discussion group in their American Literature team teaching class. A highlight of the language arts classes this year was the assembly on gComedy Through the Ages, presented by the Actors Workshop of San rancisco. F
