Shakespeare Comes As part of the world wide Celebration of the Quadric-Centennial of the birthf of William Shakespeare, Castro Valley High and the local Chamber of Commerce presented the Shakespear- ean Film Festival. ln a series of three programs beginning on March 2 and ending on March 17, citizens of Castro Valley were given an opportunity to see some of the world's leading actors and actresses performing in the famous plays of England's immortal and cherished dramatist. Each performance, which began at the high school, included music by the brass ensemble, under direction of MV. Eugene Grapes, Elizabethan songs by the Madrigals, an art exhibition, and Old English refreshments. To serve as introductions to the films shown at the Chabot Theater, lectures were given by qualified speakers on the various aspects of Shakespeare and the era in which he lived. The first film, King Henry V, starring Sir Lawrence Olivier, told of how a man con- sidered to be a playboy proved himself worthy of the noble position of King of England. One of Shakespeare's ,most famous plays, Romeo and Juliet, the story of star crossed lovers and the tragic end of their forbidden love,,Was the next film. The final program, that of the revenge play of Hamlet,, also included an exhibition of fencing which tied in with the final scene of the play. With all three programs combining history, drama, pageantry, romance, and comedy into thrilling spectaculars, the audiences were not only enlightened as to the culture of the Shakespearean Era but were entertained as well. The Castro Valley Chabot Theater marquis lights up to display the Shakespeare feature of Henry V.
