In preparation for their meets, the Spartan Junior Varsity Cross Country and Frosh-Soph teams ran many miles through the streets and hills of the valley gaining necessarytraining for a great year in Castro Valleytrack competition. Although both managed only to place fourth in HAAL standings, they showed the spirit and de- termination essential for future success to any team. Among the J.V. runners who showed great achievement and potential for future years were Stan Miller, George N unes, Larry Bellinger, Spartan J.V. Cross Country runners take their starting posi- tions at the Tennyson-Castro Valley Meet. At the Tennyson-Castro Valley Meet, Jerry Ockerman is seen coming to the finish line ahead of the others. Bryan Cadinha, Je rry O c kerman, ami Jeff Perenon. Adding a new light and spark of hope for future Castro Valley championships were such Frosh-Soph runners as Greg Shepard, Garry Wolfe, Tim Biddinger and Steve Morjig. Although neither team finished tops in the league, Spartans can be justifiably proud of their hard work and sportsmanship throughout the season and can look forward to a great showing in future Castro Valley cross country competi- tion. arsity Cross Countr Paul Weston strides out in front of two Tennyson runners with Bermwd Kraus coming up fast.' With five wins and only one loss, coming at the hands of the Hayward Farmers, Castro Valley's Varsity Cross Country team completed another suc- cessful season. Highlighting the year, they earned an overall third place standing inthe HAAL meet which took place at Arroyo High School. In addition, the runners participated in the Sacramento State and Terra Nova Invitationals held in November, when they had an opportunity to show their great speed and strength against top-notch teams from all over the State. Filled with a deep desire to win, the team was paced by such excellent runners as Paul Weston, Bernie Kraus, Dave Turcotte, Rich Bauden, Rod Christensen, Jim Duperroir and by two sophomores who showed great potential for the future, Dave Fong, and Neil Jorgensen. In the course of the season, Paul Weston set a new record in a three way meet by running 1.9 miles in a fast 9 minutes and 31 seconds, to beat the Farmer record by 8.seconds. On the whole, Castro Valley can be thoroughly proud of its team and feel fortunate in that many will be returning again next year. Larry Bellinger r u n s a- gainst Tennyson.
